THE BEATITUDES – A TEACHER’S PERSPECTIVE
Then Jesus took his disciples up the mountain and he taught them:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Then Simon Peter said, “Rabbi, could you repeat that again?”
And Matthew said, “Should I be writing this down?”
And John said, “Rabbi, can I go to the bathroom?”
And James said, “Rabbi, will we have a test on this?”
And Andrew said, “John the Baptist never made us take a test.”
And Phillip said, “Rabbi, if there is a test will it be open scroll?”
And Bartholomew said, “Do we have to turn in anything?”
And Thaddeus said, “I can’t remember all this stuff; it’s hopeless.”
And the other James said, “Rabbi, can’t we just have a free day?”
And Thomas said, “I wasn’t here yesterday, can I have an extra day to learn this stuff?”
And Simon the Zealot said, “Jesus, you’re the best teacher I’ve ever had.”
And Judas said, “What does any of this have to do with real life?”
Then one of the Pharisees present asked to see Jesus’ lesson plan and said, “Can you show proof that you
have taught the performance standards for this lesson?”
And Jesus wept.
