In fact the latter appears twice in the same scene, portrayed in the guise of Pope Leo the Great and as cardinal. In 452, when the King of the Huns, Attila, invaded Italy and threatened Rome, Emperor Valentinian III sent three envoys to negotiate with him: the two high civil officers Gennadius Avienus and Trigetius, and Pope Leo I (The Great). The negotiation was successful, and Attila withdrew. The reasons of this choice have been debated among historians. Pragmatic concerns such as the large sum of gold that accompanied Leo, or logistical and strategic concerns, may have been the true reason for Attila’s mercy. It is difficult to understand how anyone, especially a Christian with an appreciation of the good that Western Civilization has brought to the world that on balance outweighs the bad, cannot look upon the spread of Sharia Law as a case barbarians being at the gate.

The sad reality is that the governments of western nations are so obsessed with political correctness and cultural diversity that a blind eye is being turned to the horror that is being inflicted again and again in our society by those who subscribe to the legitimacy of Sharia Law.  I am thinking of the many reported cases in England where the most horrible crimes are excused as cultural aberrations.

It was just last year that a man, owner of a radio station in upstate New York which he and his wife operated, killed his wife and cut off her head because she had filed for a civil divorce.  The horror was compounded by the decision of the local district attorney to charge the man with manslaughter instead of first degree murder.  One suspects that the district attorney was motivated by a fear of being labeled as prejudiced against the ethnic and religious identity of the man.

The barbarians are at the gate.
