Brings vividly to mind the terrible Holocaust and something said by Pseudo Dionysius over a thousand years ago: “Any defect will make a thing bad.” [Divine Names 4 30]. Taken out of context, this would mean that the defect of picking one’s nose in public is morally equivalent to sending 9,000,000 men, women and children to Death Camps.

Reductio ad absurdum? And surely this alone cannot explain how so many seemingly pious Christian people from many denominations could allow the Holocaust?
A human being is very complex. A human life is made up of perhaps trillions of things and events. But if “any defect will make a thing bad,” then any mistake allows one to label someone “stupid” as if the scope, depth and complexity of their whole life could reduced to this six letter word. Can a human being be “summed up” in a word like lazy, stupid, weak, no good… without gross oversimplification to the point of misrepresentation? They cannot, at least not according to the canons of Aristotelian logic. But they could be if the saying “any defect will make a thing bad” was true.
A teacher can give a grade to a student assignment? But can a teacher give a grade to a total human being? Can a teacher call a student “stupid”, in fairness? Einstein recalls how he was called “stupid” once. And Thomas Edison had a teacher who asked Edison’s parents to remove him from school for being “too stupid.” Later in life Edison wrote: “I haven’t failed, I just found 10,000 ways that don’t work!”
We are quick to over-generalize and over-simplify: “The Jews are this.” “The Moslems are that.”
“He or she is [ontologically] stupid, lazy, weak, no good, worthless.” Aristotle said: “What is true of a part or aspect of something or someone is not necessarily true of the whole.” But we as a culture are sometimes addicted to over-simplification and over-generalization.” The Catholic philosopher, Gabriel Marcel once said: “It is good to remember that a description is not the same as the thing described.” Sitting under a tree in July is quite different than sitting under a description of a tree and that applies to both true and untrue descriptions.
When we over-simply a person, we often do so along the lines . . . “any defect will make someone bad.” We may not violate “love thy enemies” with physical violence, but how often do we make words into weapons: “I will over-simplify that person or group of persons and then pretend my over-simplification is the whole truth as in . . . those Jews are such and such or those x [fill in the blank] are thus.
A gnoseological Holocaust preceded the physical Holocaust. Once a person or group of people is vilified or demonized through over-simplification, a verbal Holocaust has already begun.
