  1. If he was a Catholic , he damn well better have been hiding the fact . It is well known that Papists were feared because of the earlier Inquisition and the fact that they did not believe people were sovereign . The Church claimed it ruled every one and every thing in God’s creation .
The Founders later gave Maryland in hopes they would leave the rest of the republics alone , but alas look at the mess we are in today . Church and state what a mess . Look at Germany and Jesus’s family values are all but washed down the toilet .

I find this article so very interesting. For myself, admittedly not knowing the historical background of these times in detail, it seems to me that since it had only been 70 years or so since Henry VIII became the head of the Church of England until the death of Captain Archer, I would guess many people held onto their Catholic faith secretly even while behaving as Anglicans outwardly. Even though Captain Archer was only 34 when he died, I imagine his parents had brought him up in the Catholic faith in spite of the change to the Church, they having lived through the change. From my limited understanding of the history of England, Catholicism amongst the common people in England during the time of Henry VIII was very strong, deeply embedded in the culture and daily life of the people. I would guess many people viewed Henry’s actions to change the Church as persecution, and held their former beliefs strongly albeit privately, in spite of political pressure to change their outward actions, and taught their children to hold to Catholicism. That’s at least how I might interpret this new find.
Thank you for sharing this article.
