NUNS RUNNING THE STEEPLECHASE TO SEE THE POPE

On August 15, 1950 I went to the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome to participate in the Mass to be celebrated there by Pope Pius XII.

I awaited the Pope’s arrival at the Basilica in the courtyard in front of the Basilica.

When the Pope’s motorcade pulled up in front of the Basilica people came running out of the Basilica to see the Pope.

Among the people were a lot of nuns in full habit.

As they ran across the grass in the courtyard they pulled up their garb to their knees and jumped over the low hedges that formed the formal garden in the courtyard.

I had never before seen nuns pulling up their habits and jumping over hedges and so I snapped this photo of the “Nuns’ Steeplechase.”
