This is the best video promoting the celebration of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass and explaining why the priest-celebrant should face ‘liturgical East’ when celebrating either the Novus Ordo Form of the Mass or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass.  And I write this because it is true, not because I am featured in the video.

“As from time immemorial, so too in the future, it is necessary to maintain the principle that ‘each particular Church {Latin, Byzantine, Melkite, Syro-Malabar, etc} must be in accord with the universal Church not only regarding the doctrine of the faith and sacramental signs, but also as to the usages universally received from apostolic and unbroken tradition.  These are to be observed not only so that errors may be avoided, but also that the faith may be handed on in its integrity, since the Church’s rule of prayer (lex orandi) corresponds to her rule of faith (lex credendi).'”  {General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 3rd ed., 2002, 397 quoted by Pope Benedict XVI in his Apostolic Letter Summorum Pontificum.]

” The Roman Missal promulgated by Pope Paul VI is the ordinary expression of the lex orandi (rule of prayer) of the Catholic Church of the Latin.  The Roman Missal promulgated by Saint Pius V and revised by Blessed John XXIII is nonetheless to be considered an extraordinary expression of the same lex orandi of the Church and duly honoured for its venerable and ancient usage.  These two expressions of the Church’s lex orandi will in no way lead to a division in the Church’s lex credendi (rule of faith); for they are two usages of the one Roman rite.           It is therefore permitted to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass following the typical edition of the Roman Missal, which was promulgated by Blessed John XXIII in 1962 and never abrogated, as an extraordinary form of the Church’s Liturgy.”  {Article 1 of the Apostolic Letter Summorum Pontificum of Pope Benedict XVI promulgated with magisterial infallibility on 07 July 2007.}

  1. This video is wonderful ! i have always loved the Latin Mass ! Sometimes, at the Chapel on Base, our priest says Mass Ad Orientem. The first time he did this, I realized that at times I had been “seeing” the priest ,even though my eyes were fixed on Jesus. As it says in the video, sometimes the priest is a distraction, as seeing the people must be a distraction for the priest too.
    There is so much reverence, so much true Adoration, at the Elevation when the priest raises Jesus up for us to see..Body and Blood..that sometimes it takes my breathe away!
    When the priest becomes “invisible” , he decreases , and Jesus increases. May it always be so!
