Your Local Mass Canceled? Try Meditating on the Texts of the Traditional Mass

Growing up in the Novus Ordo, I was never accustomed to using a missal, nor did I ever see anyone else using one. Preacher said we had to take up our hymnal and follow it, but it was a rare bird who followed the Mass from a missalette. The vernacular was supposed to make everything accessible, and the texts themselves were simplified, so missals lost much of their point.

When I discovered the traditional Latin Mass in college, part of the huge draw of it to me was precisely the daily missal — that monumental resource of rich prayer and meditation. I looked forward to taking up this book whenever I could get to Mass, setting the colorful ribbons in it ahead of the bell, and following the golden path of the liturgy from start to finish.

Then I discovered what most traditional Catholics discover before too long: how to pray with the Missal outside the church. Say you get sick and have to stay in bed, maybe for several days, or your car battery turns out to be dead, or the only TLM-equipped priest in your area is away on retreat, or, for whatever other reason, getting to Mass is impossible. You pick up your Baronius or St. Andrew’s or Lasance missal, open to the Introit, and start quietly speaking the words. You bow your head at the Gloria Patri and repeat the Introit, then say Kyrie eleison three times, Christe eleison three times, Kyrie eleison three times. The Collect follows. And so, through the Epistle, Gradual, Tract or Alleluia, Gospel, etc., until the end.

At first, you don’t have much of a clue how to go about doing it. What text do I say, and when? Should I pray certain things or skip them? No matter how smooth or bumpy the initial trials, you come to the beautiful realization that yes, indeed, I can do a layman’s “dry Mass” on my own, so that I am uniting myself spiritually with the Church’s greatest prayer wherever it is being offered in the world.

The coronavirus epidemic has laid bare many implicit assumptions of our time. With Masses discontinued almost everywhere, look at the advice being given to the laity by pastors and popular writers: “Read the Scripture readings of the day” and/or “Make a spiritual communion.” These are obviously good things to do, and we should do them. But note that either of these things could just as easily be said by and to a Protestant: read your Bible and wish to be united to Jesus, the Bread of Life. (Indeed, this is more or less how Protestants interpret John 6.) I would submit that, as well intentioned as such advice is, it misses the forest for the trees.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is first and foremost the offering of the Holy Victim to God, to which the readings and prayers lead up, as if one were climbing a winding path to the summit of the mountain. Sacramental communion is then available for those who are duly prepared to join themselves to the High Priest and Victim in the most intimate manner possible. Current advice to Catholics suggests that, in the minds of many (as in the minds of many liturgical reformers), the Mass has been redefined — or rather, reduced — to a gathering for Bible-reading and Communion.

Prayerfully reciting the antiphons, orations, and readings in a traditional missal; pausing after the Secret to offer up to the Father the all-pleasing Host at the hands of priests around the world who are saying Mass that day or at that moment; and, at last, making a spiritual communion: this is a more Catholic way to join oneself to the great sacrifice that pleases God. People may even find it more spiritually fruitful than watching a televised Mass, which can have something artificial about it and is, in any case, not at all different existentially from doing devotions on one’s own. (In other words, the televised Mass may help you to pray, but the Real Presence is over there in the chapel being filmed, not right here in your room; you would be doing essentially the same thing by imagining yourself present at Mass a few blocks away when you hear the church bells ringing.)

What follows are two methods for using a TLM missal for personal prayer: a Shorter Method (which takes about 15 minutes) and a Longer Method (20–30 minutes), with the length of time varying depending on how long the readings are, if there are extra commemorations, and how much you choose to meditate on the texts or keep periods of silence. The PDFs are formatted as booklets: print them double-sided and fold (for best results, select “None” for “Page scaling” rather than “Fit to printable area”). Either method may be done in English, in Latin, or in whatever proportion of either you are comfortable with. Postures are your call, even as they are in the Latin Mass itself, which has no regulations governing the postures of the faithful. You could, for example, kneel for the Kyrie and the orations, while sitting for the Epistle and standing for the Gospel. Or sit for the whole.

Either method may be adapted for communal use in a family on Sundays (or on any day, especially for feasts of favorite saints like St. Joseph or Our Lady). The father of the family, if possible, otherwise the mother, should read the texts out loud from the missal, and the others present could make the responses.

On days in my life when I could not make it to Mass, I have never found anything more edifying as a form of private prayer than to “pray” the Mass in this way.[i] It may look complicated, but it’s rather straightforward in practice, and it quickly becomes second nature. If one finds the right time of day to do it (usually first thing in the morning), it will help us to follow the Apostle’s advice: “Be not conformed to this world; but be reformed in the newness of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and the acceptable and the perfect will of God” (Rom. 12:12), and “let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 2:5). The traditional lex orandi delivers to us and inculcates in us this supernatural wisdom, and we do well to remain close to it.

This may mark a terminal stage of President Joe Biden’s time in the Oval Office.

On Thursday, the Biden administration finally dropped Title 42, a public health policy implemented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the Trump administration that allowed for the quick deportation of illegal immigrants during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The policy has been kicked around like a football for a while now but what’s happening this week is significant. It signals to future illegal border crossers that there is virtually no obstacle to their breaking U.S. law, entering the country, and ultimately being allowed to stay because the Biden administration is intent on not enforcing immigration laws.

You don’t enforce the laws, and the people will come.

We have seen other low points during the Biden tenure. This is, after all, the participation trophy of presidencies. Biden is expected to do little more than show up at public events and mumble a few incoherent sentences before his next trip to the ice cream shop, while the deep state runs the country. Lately, he’s struggled even to do that.

Nevertheless, the DEFCON 1 border catastrophe we appear to be on the eve of witnessing goes along with the president’s other troubles, including his all-time low approval ratings of 36%

According to that Washington Post-ABC News survey, 68% of Americans say they think Biden is too old for another term as president. 

Crises appear to be piling up. The war in Ukraine continues, China is more belligerent than ever, inflation is destroying the wealth of the average American, and we appear to be in the beginning stages of serious banking turmoil. There’s even a congressional probe into bribery accusations aimed at Biden and his family.

Some media outlets have portrayed what’s now developing at the southern border as the beginning of a border crisis.

“At 11:59 pm on Thursday, May 11, one emergency will officially end and another may begin,” writes Brian Bennett at Time magazine. “That’s when the Biden administration has scheduled the end of the COVID-19 health emergency, which also means the expiration of a pandemic-era practice that began under the Trump administration of immediately expelling people trying to cross the border without allowing them to request asylum.”

That’s wrong.

The border crisis isn’t just about to begin; it began when Biden became president. Almost immediately after Biden was sworn in, he took steps to signal—through rhetoric and executive orders—that it was open season at the southern border.

“We’re going to work to undo the moral and national shame of the previous administration,” Biden said when he signed executive orders undoing Trump policies that stemmed illegal immigration.

Among the most important policies that Biden fought to undo was the “Remain in Mexico” rule mandating that asylum-seekers stay on the other side of the border as they awaited a decision on their claims. This both deterred bogus asylum-seekers and created a more orderly situation at the border.

After a long legal battle, the policy effectively was done away with. Republicans in Congress want to bring Remain in Mexico back, but Democrats largely are uninterested.

Instead of border security, the Biden administration promised to target the “root causes” of illegal immigration. That hasn’t worked out.

An estimated 2.76 million illegal border crossings occurred in fiscal year 2022, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, shattering the previous record by over 1 million. The previous record was set the year before, at 1.72 million illegal border crossings. It’s looking like 2023 will be worse.

Congrats to Biden for setting records in lawlessness in every year of his presidency. A historic presidency, truly.

What’s happening now isn’t the crisis. It’s merely the secondary explosion following a massive chemical fire of a crisis that’s been building for years.

Axios and other outlets reported that 150,000 migrants were headed toward the border in preparation for Thursday’s lifting of Title 42. Border Patrol agents have been arresting over 10,000 illegal immigrants a day in the week before Title 42 goes, setting single-day apprehension records.

These numbers almost certainly will go up, maybe significantly, in the days ahead. How will the government deal with those arrivals?

According to CBS News reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez, over 27,000 illegal border crossers were in Border Patrol custody as of Tuesday, “despite the agency only having a holding capacity for several thousand.”

It’s unlikely the Biden administration can or even will try to meet this challenge. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has spent the past few yearsinsisting the border is “secure,” despite record border crossings.

Don’t expect Biden’s border czar, Vice President Kamala Harris, to do much of anything. She’s barely even been to the border and it’s doubtful she wants to be seen wading through her administration’s failure.

Where’s the president? Whistling past the few reporters who’d question his policies.

Oh, but good news. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre recently claimed that illegal immigration is down by 90%.

“We actually deal with the immigration system in a humane way, in a way that actually deals with what we’re seeing at the border,” Jean-Pierre said May 1. “And that’s why you’ve seen the parolee program be so successful. When it comes to illegal immigration, you’ve seen it come down by more than 90%.”

Oh great, problem solved!

Some in the left-wing press actually tried to “contextualize” that whopper by the president’s main spokeswoman.

As much as this administration has gotten away with what’s happened at the border, this feels like a turning point. The 2024 presidential race is starting. Americans are going to feel the shock waves of the immigration problem, whether they live on the border or not.

Remember, all it took was about 50 illegal immigrants being flown into liberal Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts to get a massive media response.

What’s going to happen at the border in upcoming months is going to be bad, real bad. And even the clever dissemblers who’ve tried to put lipstick on this pig aren’t going to be able to wiggle out of explaining it.

I don’t have to tell you how badly Bud Light and its parent company is doing, these days. Over a month ago, the company partnered with a transgender figure, sparking shock and outrage from millions of traditional Americans.

It didn’t take long for customers to organize a boycott. Once loyal buyers of Bud Light and other Anheuser-Busch products ditched the company. Reports indicated that the company lost $5 billion in value. Sales of their products continue to crater.

And now, it looks like they are suffering an even bigger loss.

A major multinational bank downgraded the stock status of Anheuser-Busch amidst the continued fallout from the Dylan Mulvaney partnership controversy.

HSBC downgraded the stock of Anheuser-Busch InBev to a hold status, meaning investors should neither buy nor sell shares of it. In an analysis, Carlos Laboy, managing director for the global beverage sector of HSBC, said that AB InBev had poorly handled its efforts to shift its brand culture in the U.S. AB InBev’s sales have continued to plummet because of the fallout…

“Why did its US leadership underestimate the risk of pushback given the recent experience of other firms? Is A-B hiring the best people to grow the brands and gauge risk? If Budweiser and Bud Light are iconic American ideas that have long brought consumers together, why did these marketers fail to invite new consumers without alienating the core base of the firm’s largest brand?” [Source: Daily Wire]

We know why. Bud Light and its parent company are putting woke politics ahead of American customers. They care more about scoring brownie points with the radical left than they do provide a quality product to traditional Americans.

More and more companies are being run by left-wing Democrats. And they don’t care if they lose billions, so long as they can push their woke agenda. They are trying to remake America in their image. Democrats are pushing woke ideas through our schools, colleges, movies, TV, social media, and everything else.

They aren’t going to stop doing that. Every corner of our society has been infiltrated by un-American socialists, hellbent and brainwashing us into obeying them. Do you think they are going to back down, now?

Of course, not. Only when they realize how much Americans reject their woke agenda will they learn. Which requires more pushback from consumers.

Maybe they’ll learn, once Bud Light is a thing of the past…

For the Greek word in the Gospel is [full of grace] kecharitomene. It is a perfect passive participle of the verb charitoo. A perfect passive participle is very strong. In addition, charitoo belongs to a group of verbs ending in omicron omega. They have in common that they mean to put a person or thing into the state indicated
by the root. Thus leukos means white, so leukoo means to make white. Then charitoo should mean to put into charis. That word charis can mean either favor or graceBut if we translate by favor, we must keep firmly in mind that favor must not mean merely that God, as it were, sits there and smiles at someone, without giving anything. That would be Pelagian: salvation possible without grace. So for certain, God does give something, and that something is grace, are share in His own life. So charitoo means to put into grace. But then too, kecharitomene is used in place of the name “Mary”. This is like our English usage in which we say, for example, someone is Mr. Tennis. That means he is the ultimate in tennis. So then kecharitomene should mean “Miss Grace”, the ultimate in grace. Hence we could reason that fullness of grace implies an Immaculate Conception. –

Might Francis implicitly deny Mary is the Immaculate Conception who is the highest ideal after Jesus Christ according to Father Maximilian Koble?

Who is that ideal?  The Immaculate Conception.  Why must there be such a battle?  Because Footnote 351 of Amoris laetitia smears Our Blessed Mother with the taint of our own sin, as though sanctification cannot or need not take place.  That is why the symbol of the alternate “queen,” the false deity which the heretics would like to foist upon us in place of the true Queen of Heaven and earth, is nothing but a bowl of dirt.

By blunting the ideal of Christian perfection, Francis implicitly denies the Immaculate Conception–as, indeed, he does explicitly in other ways as well.  That is why just about the first thing he did after seizing the power of the papacy (I take Bishop Rene Gracida’s viewpoint too) was to savage the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, whose specific charism it is, to reflect the Immaculata and propagate devotion to her.  Here is the very heart of the issue.  (The Sacred Heart, so to speak.)

It is not enough to comment, however incisively, on the latest Francis outrage.  We have to “Aim Higher,” making our goal the goal of the MI itself. Moreover, is the Virgin Mary’s identity tied to Immaculate Conception which is tied to her God given title and renaming: “Full of Grace”?

In Luke 1:28, the word that the angel uses is kecharitomene. So it’s not literally “full of grace,” but its root word is the Greek verb “to give grace” (charitoo). The word is the past perfect tense, meaning that the action of giving grace has already occurred. It was not something that was about to happen to her but something that has already been accomplished. The word was also used as a title. The great theologian Fr. William Most explained the biblical background of the Immaculate Conception saying “[full of grace] kecharitomene should mean “Miss Grace”, the ultimate in grace. Hence we could reason that fullness of grace implies an Immaculate Conception”:

In teaching that Mary was conceived immaculate, the Catholic Church teaches that from the very moment of her conception, the Blessed Virgin Mary was free from all stain of original sin…

For the Greek word in the Gospel is [full of grace] kecharitomene. It is a perfect passive participle of the verb charitoo. A perfect passive participle is very strong. In addition, charitoo belongs to a group of verbs ending in omicron omega. They have in common that they mean to put a person or thing into the state indicated by the root. Thus leukos means white, so leukoo means to make white. Then charitoo should mean to put into charis. That word charis can mean either favor or grace. But if we translate by favor, we must keep firmly in mind that favor must not mean merely that God, as it were, sits there and smiles at someone, without giving anything. That would be Pelagian: salvation possible without grace. So for certain, God does give something, and that something is grace, are share in His own life. So charitoo means to put into grace. But then too, kecharitomene is used in place of the name “Mary”. This is like our English usage in which we say, for example, someone is Mr. Tennis. That means he is the ultimate in tennis.

Wherefore He so wonderfully filled her, more than all angelic spirits and all the Saints, with an abundance of all heavenly gifts taken from the treasury of the divinity, that she, always free from absolutely every stain of sin, and completely beautiful and perfect, presented such a fullness of innocence and holiness that none greater under God can be thought of, and no one but God

Bishop Gracida as a Monk: “That life was a balance of private prayer, contemplation, reading… a monastic brewery… chanting of the Divine Office was the highlight of every day”

Bishop Rene Henry Gracida’s 100th birthday is coming up on June 9 so I (Fred Martinez) started reading his autobiography in preparation for the great day. Here’s a glimpse of his life as a monk:

For the monks living at the monastery life was pretty much the same as life in European monasteries.  Even though drawn to duties in the College or Seminary every day, most monks were able to live a typical monastic life in the monastery.  That life was a balance of private prayer, contemplation, reading, study and participation in the daily ordo or schedule of the monastery.

That schedule began with the tolling of the great bell in the bell tower in the center of the monastic complex.  It would ring out every morning at 4:40 AM.  After hearing that bell for ten years it became part of my very being and to this day I wake up every morning at 4:40 AM even though I am over a thousand miles away from that bell tower and cannot hear the bell.  The monks then had twenty minutes to wash, get dressed in their habits, the simple habit on ordinary days or additionally the cuculla on feast days, and hasten to the monastic choir.

On reaching the choir each monk would go to his assigned choir-stall and spend some time in silent private prayer.  When the whole community has assembled, the Archabbot would rap on his choir-stall, rise and begin the recitation or chanting of the Divine Office.  On ordinary days the monks would recite the Office, on feasts and solemnities the monks would chant the office.  With the help of a monk (a different monk was designated  hebdomodarius for a week) and he would lead the choir in the recitation or chanting of the Office with the help of the Chant Master, who would keep the chant on tone, and cantors who would chant various parts of the Office.

After praying Matins, Prime and Lauds the monks would participate in the daily Conventual Mass and then go to breakfast.  After breakfast each monk would go about performing their proper personal duties of private prayer or work.  At noon the monks would reassemble in choir and pray Terce, Sext and Nones and then go to the refectory for lunch.

After lunch again the monks would scatter and go about their daily duties.  At 4:00 PM the monks would assemble in the recreation room of the Abbey and participate in a German custom of haustis.  Haustis was an hour of relaxation, conversation, socializing over a mug of beer and a sandwich.  From the beginning Boniface Wimmer had extablished a monastic brewery and continued the Bavarian custom of brewing and consuming one mug of beer at haustis.  In addition, the monks sold beer by the barrel to many of the German immigrant communities in Western Pennsylvania.  Bishop O’Connor, Bishop of Pittsburgh, tried to stop Saint Vincent from selling its brewing and selling its beer, but the Archabbey appealed to the Holy See and won the right to continue such a long-standing German tradition.

At 5:00 PM the great bell would summon the monks back to choir where they would recite or chant vespers.  Vespers was followed by dinner and dinner was followed by recreation, usually out doors if the weather allowed.  At 8:00 PM the great bell would summon the monks back to choir where they would recite Compline (night prayer) receive the Archabbots blessing and retire for the night in silence.  The great silence of the monastery was not as strick as in Cistercian and other monasteries, but it was observed.

For me the praying of the Divine Office in choir was the heart of monastic life.  I had fallen in love with Gregorian Chant at an early age  and to participate in the recitation or chanting of the Divine Office was the highlight of every day for me. (An Ordinary’s Not So Ordinary Life, Page 41-43)

Unanswered Questions

On Saturday, a lone gunman dressed in black tactical gear pulled up at a mall in Allen, Texas, and started firing, killing 8 and wounding 7. The casualties ranged from 5 to 61. It has been revealed that this man had been discharged from the Army with mental health concerns in 2008, yet somehow, he was working as a security guard and able to purchase the guns legally. How did that happen? How was he allowed to do all those things in light of his documented mental health issues? Was somebody not paying attention? I don’t think even the most strident Second Amendment supporter, would want a mentally insane person to be allowed to legally purchase firearms. That is the main issue with many of these gun control laws that we have in place. They are not enforced properly to protect the public. The law-abiding gun owners follow the law. The criminals find a way around them.  

Considering the mental health issues of this man and the shooter in Nashville last month, are we ever going to do a legitimate study into the connection between using anti-depressant drugs and committing violent acts of crime like mass shootings? 

ü Are we ever going to do a study on the link between drug use, particularly marijuana use, and mental illness? 

ü Why do the authorities rarely ever release toxicology reports on people who commit mass shootings like they do when a person dies in a car accident or from any untimely death? 

ü Why don’t we want to know if a person who committed an extreme act of violence that only a mentally deranged person would commit was on some mind-altering drug? 

ü Wouldn’t that be helpful information in our attempt to take action to prevent these tragedies from happening again? 

ü How often are violent criminals whacked on drugs when they commit their heinous crimes?

Listed in the Important Safety Information section on the website of one of the most advertised anti-depression medications on the market, it says: “Increased risk of suicidal thoughts and actions. Antidepressant medicines may increase suicidal thoughts and actions in some children, adolescents, and young adults.” I don’t know if this shooter or the shooter in Nashville was on anti-depressants, the authorities will never tell us, but as we are in the process of deciding whether to ban certain things, wouldn’t it be smart to ban the anti-depressant drugs that increase the “risk of suicidal thoughts and actions”? I thought the point of taking anti-depressants was to reduce the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions, not increase them. Maybe this mass shooting, the shooting in Nashville, and many of the other such shootings, were the shooters’ way of committing suicide, and maybe the suicidal thoughts were brought on by mind-altering drugs. Why are we so willing to protect the pharmaceutical companies and put the average citizen at risk? 

It has come out that the 33-year-old man who committed this atrocity was an Hispanic who praised Adolf Hitler and the transgender shooter who murdered Christians in Nashville on social media. With all of the surveillance of American citizens that the FBI conducts these days, why was this person never identified as a potential threat by our intelligence agencies? As the FBI was focused on parents who speak out at school board meetings and Catholics who prefer the Latin Mass, they were completely ignoring a person who worked as a security guard and was posting pictures of himself with Nazi tattoos and praising mass shooters. The FBI was wasting its bandwidth working with social media companies to censor the political speech of conservatives to influence elections, while a neo-Nazi praising Hitler on the internet went completely unnoticed. 

It is interesting that we have found out more about the neo-Nazi and his motivation for his mass shooting within days of the attack than we have about the transgender shooter in Nashville who targeted a Christian school. Why aren’t the motivations of all these atrocities laid bare? Authorities still have not released the Nashville shooter’s manifesto which would have very important information if we want to better target potential threats, but it remains hidden to protect the LGBTQ political agenda. 

If the shooter had been a Christian who shot and killed 6 transgender people, we would know every last piece of information about that shooter within hours and anyone who wears a crucifix would now be placed on the FBI terror watch list.  

Early in his presidency, Joe Biden announced that the FBI concluded that domestic terrorists were the biggest threat to our country. This shooter was a domestic terrorist. The shooter in Nashville was a domestic terrorist. If combating domestic terrorism was the number one national security priority of the Biden administration, why were these shooters not identified through their disturbing social media posts?  Last year, Joe Biden’s deranged speech in front of Liberty Hall in Philadelphia made it clear who the FBI would be targeting in their surveillance of Americans for domestic terrorism – “MAGA Republicans”. So as FBI agents are listening to the benign conversations of a grandmother talking about Donald Trump, the neo-Nazi praising Hitler, and the transgender who hates Christians are ignored because politicians like Joe Biden are not interested in using the FBI to stop mass shootings, they are only interested in using the FBI to target Trump supporters.  

The Patriot Act was passed to give the government the power to surveil United States citizens with the sole intent of stopping another 9/11. That was the ONLY reason why we were willing to give the government that much power. And as always, the government used that power the way it was intended for about 5 seconds, and then they turned that power against the American people for political purposes. Edward Snowden, who should be lionized as a hero whistleblower, because he revealed how the NSA was abusing the Patriot Act to spy on US citizens, is now living in exile in Russia because if he returns to the United States, he will be thrown in jail for protecting our Constitutional rights from the government. 

In the wake of these types of shootings, there is always a strong call by Democrat politicians for gun control legislation and even repealing the Second Amendment. One of the reasons why so many people are so adamant against gun control measures that infringe on our Constitutional rights is legislation like the Patriot Act. There has never been legislation where the government assumes certain power that it doesn’t Constitutionally have or where the government takes from the citizens’ freedoms that they Constitutionally possess, where the government has not exploited that power against the people for their political purposes. Just as we saw with the abuses of the surveillance state, we know from history that if we give up our Second Amendment rights and government assumes that much more power over us, it will, as always, be used and abused against the citizens.

If celebration of the mere concept of motherhood is “triggering” for you, your problems are bigger than Mother’s Day. Motherhood—like life—is not a “safe space.”

Leaving Mother’s Day alone

The controversy over various companies’ “opt-out of Mother’s Day” emails sent around in late April seems to have had its fifteen minutes of fame. The superficial take on the news was a simplistic dichotomy: opponents called it another example of woke ideology, proponents countered by saying it was just an effort to be “sensitive” to women for whom Mother’s Day might be “triggering.”

I’ve got news for you: if celebration of the mere concept of motherhood is “triggering” for you, your problems are bigger than Mother’s Day. Motherhood—like life—is not a “safe space.”

When called on the carpet about their emails, many companies sputtered to explain how celebrating Mother’s Day was provocative. After opining that not every mother-child relationship is ideal (though I didn’t know anybody outside of Nazareth claimed that), the most broadly socially acceptable excuse became that women who have lost children. Some cited miscarriage, others COVID, I’m sure drug overdoses will be referenced as soon as we balance the “equity” issues related to victims.

I’ve written elsewhere that am unpersuaded by these band-aid explanations, for two reasons. First, women in these circumstances value motherhood: they grieve over what they no longer or cannot have, because motherhood is a value to them. And the fact that they see a value in motherhood raises a further question: the emotionalization of American life. The value lies in motherhood, not in their appreciation of motherhood.

That is a key distinction we need to unpack to see what other cryptic factors are at work here because I think there are other rotten bones in that crypt. I think there are two.

First, if someone values motherhood and hurts because it is or is no longer something she can share, one should feel empathy. But if the value of motherhood is in motherhood and not just one’s feelings about motherhood, then it means that the value of motherhood is something we all share, not just as individuals but as a community, society, and culture. But, if that’s true, then we should hesitate before we mute our common celebration of a value just because it might be emotional for some. 

I’ll cite a personal example. My father died on December 23. For my mother, Christmas subsequently stood in that shadow. We had a crèche but there was no Christmas tree in my home from age 12 until my future wife brought one back in at age 36. I sympathize with my mother and, now as an adult, recognize her pain. But I would certainly not suggest society mute Christmas, even if—at least in some ways—it was muted in my house.

Second, I am not convinced this is just about “respectfully feeling your pain.” I think there is another factor here: the de-valuation of motherhood.

We have lived under the murderous regime of Roe v. Wade for fifty years. The central lie of that holding was that motherhood (like life itself) had no intrinsic significance, at least in terms of the law. Motherhood was subsumed under “choice.” If you were happy being a “mother,” we’re happy for you and your “baby.” If you were not happy about being a “mother,” then we’re happy that you “terminated” your “clump of cells” and gotten on with your life.

Roe taught almost three generations of Americans that it wasn’t motherhood but what you thought about it that was important. How far is that from the ethic of Mother’s Day opt-out?

In reaffirming Roe, Anthony Kennedy penned the risible (and false) claim that “at the heart of liberty is the right to define one’s own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe ….” Well, if Roe guarantees human facility to self-define the universe, I guess it’s powerful enough to let us all attribute our own definition and value to motherhood. Maternity, post-Kennedy (and, thankfully, pre-Alito) became like baseball and apple pie: mere acquired tastes. 

So, unlike women who mourn the loss of motherhood, votaries of Roe really want to opt out of Mother’s Day because maternity is nothing to mourn. Its value (or lack thereof) is a tabula rasa, a blank slate on which to project “one’s own concept of existence, or meaning, of the universe ….”

That’s a much different situation. 

So, which mindset drove Levi’s, Doordash, et al.? Inquiring minds want to know.

Let me also go back to the question of shared meaning. Mother’s Day “opt-outs” reflect merely the latest stage in the evisceration of shared community values. How dare we celebrate “mothers” when not all mothers value motherhood? And how dare we even privilege “mothers” (and “fathers”) over “parents one and two” of whatever sex?

The values we publicly celebrate and honor in American public life are growing increasingly attenuated. Christopher Columbus has fallen from discoverer to colonial rogue. Thanksgiving has descended from cross-communal celebration of God’s bounty to an attack on American Indians. Christmas? It’s still on the civil calendar, a secular holiday-in-drag whose alternate identity is “winter holiday” which we celebrate while asking neither what nor why. 

The rest of our civil holiday calendar is marked by long weekends with Mondays off, whose shared celebrations and meanings have largely shriveled to the “President’s Day” or “Labor Day” sales. (Back in 2003 Shania Twain commented our new religion was “shoppin’ every Sunday at the mall,” though even that communal activity has now been supplanted by click-and-order from under the covers). 

Unsure whether America’s origins really lie in 1776 or 1619, the content of July 4 is increasingly “qualified” (AKA “drained”), leaving behind a communal celebration of hot dogs and fireworks. I’d argue that the marginalization of Memorial and Veteran’s Days are functions not just of the loss of patriotism but of the culture of death: is there still anything of a shared social vision about the fate of those who have died and—since death is increasingly seen as just another “healthcare alternative” at the beginnings and end of life—what’s so bad about a cemetery, a place we never go to anyway because, well, why would you?

In light of that enfeeblement of shared social meaning, why should Mother’s Day be any different? We bowl alone, though the bowling alley still makes us follow certain rules. Why can’t we celebrate alone, each in our own way?

Is that modern America’s recipe for Mother’s Day?

Ben Shapiro: How CNN just boosted Trump

This week, former President Donald Trump appeared on a CNN town hall. That day, he trumpeted the upcoming event on his social media platforms. “I’ll be doing CNN tonight live from the great state of New Hampshire because CNN is rightfully desperate to get those Trump ratings back,” Trump said with a wry grin. “They were ratings like none other, and they want them back. They made me a deal they couldn’t refuse. It could be the beginning of a new and vibrant CNN with no more fake news, or it could be a total disaster for all, including me. Let’s see what happens, tonight at 8 o’clock!”

Trump pitched the event like a WWE Monday Night Raw.

And it was.

It was kayfabe of the highest order. And it helped Trump immensely.

CNN pitched the event as a kickoff to primary season. In that spirit, they invited Republican primary voters from New Hampshire to fill the auditorium. Moderator Kaitlin Collins, presumably, would ask questions that Republican voters cared about. They would then be able to use Trump’s answers to gauge whether to vote for him.

That’s not what happened.

Instead, Collins asked a series of questions only Democrats care about. She asked about Jan. 6. She asked about Trump’s election denial. She asked about classified documents. She asked about E. Jean Carroll. In short, Collins provided Trump with precisely what he wanted: an adversarial CNN foe he could absolutely pummel, to the delight of the friendly crowd. The entire event played to Trump’s strengths: he was aggressive; he was funny, and transgressively funny at that (of E. Jean Carroll, he noted disbelievingly, “her cat was named Vagina!”); and he refused to give an inch on any of his positions.

Trump under fire from the Left draws nothing but admiration from most Republicans, who constantly feel that they are scurrilously attacked but rarely see a defender willing to go dirty to defend them. Trump defending himself deploys the methodologies they wish Republican politicians would use to defend them. And so, CNN boosted Trump.

CNN found itself on the wrong end of the outrage machine from the liberal commentariat. The irrepressibly insipid Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY., tweeted, “CNN should be ashamed of themselves… Everyone here saw exactly what was going to happen.” MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough likened the event to Jan. 6. The Daily Beast’s Justin Baragona related that a CNN on-air personality couldn’t stop lamenting the “Trump infomercial.”

But was the event bad for CNN? Not really. As Trump — who always says the quiet part out loud, for good and ill — stated, CNN brought in the ratings. What’s more, CNN wants Trump to be the nominee, for both fiscal and political reasons. Trump does indeed mean eyeballs, and eyeballs mean cash. And coincidentally, top Democrats want Trump to be the nominee; President Joe Biden tweeted minutes after the town hall, “It’s simple, folks. Do you want four more years of that?”

For now, Trump is the clear front-runner among the Republican candidates. Perhaps his star will dim as he focuses consistently on his own personal Festivus grievances. Or perhaps the media will continue to boost him, providing him with just the adversarial opposition he needs in order to appeal to his base. If the past is any guide, the latter seems far more likely. And then we’ll find out whether the Republican base, which apparently believes in Trump’s electoral invulnerability despite the elections of 2018 and 2020, is correct — or whether the Democratic base and the media, who apparently believe Trump can’t possibly win despite the election of 2016, are mistaken.

Weaponizing Death

Recently there has been a spate of horrific murders.

The killers, whether committing mass shootings or single homicides, are hard to stereotype.

They can be clearly either mentally ill or simply innately evil. They can kill for revenge, for ideological purposes, out of hatred, for notoriety—or no known reason at all.

They are probably left-wing and right-wing, white, black, and brown, young, and old. While their weapons of choice are semiautomatic rifles, there are plenty of killers who favor handguns and even knives.

Unfortunately, these tragedies increasingly have become politicized.

Yet our media and politicians do not apply a common standard of reporting about either the victims, the killers, or the apparent motives and circumstances of the violence.

Instead, each horror is quickly analyzed for its political usefulness. Then its details are electively downplayed or emphasized, depending upon the political agenda at work.

A sad example was the terrible murder spree at the private Christian Covenant School in Nashville. A transgender male lethally shot six people, including three 9-year-old children.

Almost immediately, three media narratives emerged:

One, semiautomatic weapons, not the killer Audrey Hale, were mostly responsible for the massacre.

Two, the shooter’s transgender identity profile played no role in the killing whatsoever.

Three, the public had no need to know of the contents of the shooter’s “manifesto.”

Why?

The media and authorities apparently assumed Hale’s written rantings tried to justify the murders because of Christianity’s supposed disapproval of transgenderism.

That censored reaction to the Tennessee shooting was quite different from another mass murder committed nearly six weeks later in Allen, Texas by a former security guard Mauricio Garcia.

Within minutes of the identification of the shooter, the media blared that Garcia wore pro-Nazi insignia and was thus a “white supremacist.”

Apparently, that narrative was deemed useful to promote the idea of white supremacist terrorists using their semiautomatic “assault”weapons to kill for right-wing agendas.

Yet second-generation Hispanic immigrants, whose parents do not speak English, are not likely “white supremacists.”

The strained effort to make violent “people of color” into white right-wing killers is reminiscent of Trayvon Martin’s death in 2012.

Then the media reinvented the shooter, half-Peruvian George Zimmerman, into a “white Hispanic.” He was transformed into a right-wing vigilante and racist who supposedly hunted down an innocent black teenager.

The media did not wish to portray Martin’s death as a fight between a Hispanic and a black teen. Instead, it tried to refashion the shooting as “systemic racism”—to the point of doctoring the 911 tape and photoshopping Zimmerman’s police photo to fit its false narratives.

Recently, an African American man named Deion Patterson lethally shot one and wounded four others in an Atlanta medical waiting room. His politics, race, and type of weapon were apparently of little interest. So he was simply described as suffering from mental illness.

The media also did not wish to sensationalize either the profile or circumstances of another contemporaneous mass shooter Francisco Oropeza. He executed five of his neighbors, including a young boy and two women.

Only later did we learn that Oropeza was in fact an illegal alien who had been deported four times previously and returned each time through an open border.

Most recently, outrage grew over the homicide of Jordan Neely, a homeless man who frequented the subway and often threatened and occasionally attacked bystanders.

When a would-be good Samaritan and ex-Marine determined Neely’s latest threats to passengers were serious, he subdued him with a chokehold. Tragically Neely died while being restrained.

A media circus followed. Neely was black. The former Marine who held him down was white. So activists and the media immediately cited the death as yet more proof of systemic racism.

The public was lectured that Neely was a talented impersonator, who did professional street imitations of Michael Jackson.

The violent death of his mother, we were told, had traumatized him.

Released subway videos showed him on the floor of the subway, thrashing about while the white Marine held him in a headlock.

Protests and demands for a murder indictment followed.

Then later the inevitable skipped details trickled out, despite, not because of, media coverage.

·      Neely had been arrested 42 times, including for lewd conduct, with three convictions for violent assaults.

·      His forte was brutally punching random victims in the face, including a 67-year-old woman, and a 68-year-old Hispanic male.

·      The news stories also neglected to mention that a black passenger helped subdue Neely.

·      The public learned there might be other, as yet unreleased, videos of Neely earlier threatening commuters.

Death is traumatic enough, without searching for ways to gain political traction from it.

It is eerie how each tragedy prompts a desperate effort to spin narratives of a racist America, where only right-wing killers and vigilantes prey on marginalized people of color and the transgendered.

Once these fables become “facts,” then the media runs with their fables.

Bishop Gracida as a Monk: “That life was a balance of private prayer, contemplation, reading… a monastic brewery… chanting of the Divine Office was the highlight of every day”

Bishop Rene Henry Gracida’s 100th birthday is coming up on June 9 so I started reading his autobiography in preparation for the great day. Here’s a glimpse of his life as a monk:

For the monks living at the monastery life was pretty much the same as life in European monasteries.  Even though drawn to duties in the College or Seminary every day, most monks were able to live a typical monastic life in the monastery.  That life was a balance of private prayer, contemplation, reading, study and participation in the daily ordo or schedule of the monastery.

That schedule began with the tolling of the great bell in the bell tower in the center of the monastic complex.  It would ring out every morning at 4:40 AM.  After hearing that bell for ten years it became part of my very being and to this day I wake up every morning at 4:40 AM even though I am over a thousand miles away from that bell tower and cannot hear the bell.  The monks then had twenty minutes to wash, get dressed in their habits, the simple habit on ordinary days or additionally the cuculla on feast days, and hasten to the monastic choir.

On reaching the choir each monk would go to his assigned choir-stall and spend some time in silent private prayer.  When the whole community has assembled, the Archabbot would rap on his choir-stall, rise and begin the recitation or chanting of the Divine Office.  On ordinary days the monks would recite the Office, on feasts and solemnities the monks would chant the office.  With the help of a monk (a different monk was designated  hebdomodarius for a week) and he would lead the choir in the recitation or chanting of the Office with the help of the Chant Master, who would keep the chant on tone, and cantors who would chant various parts of the Office.

After praying Matins, Prime and Lauds the monks would participate in the daily Conventual Mass and then go to breakfast.  After breakfast each monk would go about performing their proper personal duties of private prayer or work.  At noon the monks would reassemble in choir and pray Terce, Sext and Nones and then go to the refectory for lunch.

After lunch again the monks would scatter and go about their daily duties.  At 4:00 PM the monks would assemble in the recreation room of the Abbey and participate in a German custom of haustis.  Haustis was an hour of relaxation, conversation, socializing over a mug of beer and a sandwich.  From the beginning Boniface Wimmer had extablished a monastic brewery and continued the Bavarian custom of brewing and consuming one mug of beer at haustis.  In addition, the monks sold beer by the barrel to many of the German immigrant communities in Western Pennsylvania.  Bishop O’Connor, Bishop of Pittsburgh, tried to stop Saint Vincent from selling its brewing and selling its beer, but the Archabbey appealed to the Holy See and won the right to continue such a long-standing German tradition.

At 5:00 PM the great bell would summon the monks back to choir where they would recite or chant vespers.  Vespers was followed by dinner and dinner was followed by recreation, usually out doors if the weather allowed.  At 8:00 PM the great bell would summon the monks back to choir where they would recite Compline (night prayer) receive the Archabbots blessing and retire for the night in silence.  The great silence of the monastery was not as strick as in Cistercian and other monasteries, but it was observed.

For me the praying of the Divine Office in choir was the heart of monastic life.  I had fallen in love with Gregorian Chant at an early age  and to participate in the recitation or chanting of the Divine Office was the highlight of every day for me. (An Ordinary’s Not So Ordinary Life, Page 41-43) 

Pray an Our Father now for reparation for the sins committed because of Francis’s Amoris Laetitia.

Pray an Our Father now for the restoration of the Church as well as the Triumph of the Kingdom of the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Stop for a moment of silence, ask Jesus Christ what He wants you to do now and next. In this silence remember God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Three Divine Persons yet One God, has an ordered universe where you can know truth and falsehood as well as never forget that He wants you to have eternal happiness with Him as his son or daughter by grace. Make this a practice. By doing this you are doing more good than reading anything here or anywhere else on the Internet.

What is needed right now to save America from those who would destroy our God given rights is to pray at home or in church and if called to even go to outdoor prayer rallies in every town and city across the United States for God to pour out His grace on our country to save us from those who would use a Reichstag Fire-like incident to destroy our civil liberties.
