Look Who Funds The Group Behind The Call To Arms At Milo’s Berkeley Event

The left-wing group that helped organize the violent shut down of the Milo Yiannopoulos event at the University of California, Berkeley on Wednesday is backed by a progressive charity that is in turn funded by George Soros, a major labor union and several large companies.

The Alliance for Global Justice, based in Tucson, is listed as an organizer and fiscal sponsor for Refuse Fascism, a communist group that encouraged left-wingers to shut down the Yiannopoulos event.

The call to arms succeeded. Yiannopoulos’ talk was cancelled after demonstrators lit fires, vandalized businesses, and assaulted Donald Trump and Yiannopoulos supporters.

Refuse Fascism, which includes Princeton professor Cornel West as one of its founding “initiators,” defended the response, issuing a statement on its website that called the shut down “righteous.” (RELATED: DNC Platform Member Cornel West Is Tied To Group Behind Berkeley Violence)

And on its Facebook page, the group asserted that the vandalism and arson were not “violence.” Instead, the group argued that Yiannopoulos and Trump perpetrate violence through the policies they support.

“Dismantling police fences is not violent. And to compare preventing someone like that from speaking to the real-world violence that they perpetuate everyday is ludicrous,” reads one post on the group’s Facebook page.

screen-shot-2017-02-03-at-11-20-43-am

The organization did not mention the violent attacks against conservatives. One Trump backer was attacked with shovels by a group of men clad in black. He was shown laying unconscious in the middle of the street. A female Trump supporter was blasted with pepper spray while giving an on-camera interview.

Refuse Fascism’s involvement has spurred questions about who is behind the group. In a series of tweets on Thursday, Trump asserted that the protesters were paid to agitate.

While it is unclear whether those who carried out the violence were paid to do so, the benefactors of the Alliance for Global Justice — and Refuse Fascism — are listed online.

According to its most recent 990 tax form, Alliance for Global Justice (AfGJ) received $2.2 million in funding for the fiscal year ending in March 2016.

One of the group’s biggest donors is the Tides Foundation, a non-profit funded by billionaire progressive philanthropist George Soros. Tides gave AfGJ $50,000.

The United Steel Workers labor union also contributed $5,000. The city of Tucson is also listed in AfGJ’s 990 as a donor, but a city official says that the city acted merely as a pass-through for a Native American tribe that provided a grant to the activist group. The city official said that no city money went to AfGJ.

A vandalized Bank of America office is seen after a student protest turned violent at UC Berkeley during a demonstration over right-wing speaker Milo Yiannopoulos in Berkeley (REUTERS)

Charities associated with several major corporations also donated. Patagonia.org, the outdoor apparel and equipment company, gave $40,000. The Ben & Jerry Foundation, the charity associated with the ice cream maker, gave $20,000. And Lush Cosmetic gave $43,950.

Another bit of irony is seen in the $5,000 contribution from the Peace Development Fund, a group that claims to support organizations that fight for human rights and social justice.

Another major donation came from a group that was chaired by Hillary Clinton during the 1980s. The New World Foundation gave $52,000 to AfGJ.

Refuse Fascism did not respond to a request for comment for this article.

Chuck Kaufman, the national co-ordinator for AfGJ, said he was only aware of the Berkeley protests through social media.

“I wasn’t aware that Refuse Fascism was involved, but probably they were one of a whole lot of groups calling to shut down Milo Yiannopoulos’ hate speech,” he told The Daily Caller.

“AfGJ acts as fiscal sponsor for Refuse Fascism which means we process tax-deductible donations for them. As long as their use of the money falls into areas permitted for tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations, we don’t involve ourselves one way or the other in their program work.”

Correction: This article initially stated that Fidelity Charitable and Schwab Charitable gave small donations to AfGJ. Those donations were made by individuals through donor-advised funds and did not come directly from either Fidelity or Schwab.

BISHOP ROBERTO GONZALEZ NIEVES APPLAUDS FRANCIS FOR HIS EFFORTS TO FREE OSCAR LOPEZ-RIVERA

Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez Nieves

How Pope Francis Helped An Unrepentant Terrorist Get A Presidential Pardon

Papal connivance with the commutation of Oscar Lopez-Rivera’s sentence was not spontaneous. Francis’ mercy-mongering on his behalf lasted more than a year.
Maureen Mullarkey

By

On January 13, Robert González Nieves, archbishop of San Juan, revealed Pope Francis’ role in Barack Obama’s pardon of terrorist mastermind Oscar Lopez-Rivera. Speaking from the Cathedral of San Juan, Nieves announced that although the Holy Father made no public statement of his involvement, he had indeed worked behind the curtain on behalf of the unrepentant, bloody-handed Lopez-Rivera.

The archbishop was pleased to say: “I know that there have been efforts made through diplomatic channels. The pope is very aware. We are grateful to the Holy Father for his support.” Papal complicity in this politically charged act received little notice in the English-language press. It deserved more. {emphasis by Abyssum}

What matters here is the pope’s part in an ideologically motivated pardon that was opposed by law enforcement and families scarred by Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional (FALN) bombs. But first, a brief recap of the Marxist-Leninist zealots whose boss earned sympathetic attention from Rome.

This Guy Is an Unrepentant Bomber

Lopez-River’s command of FALN was never in doubt, never denied. Instead, he boasted: “I am an enemy of the United States’ government.” During the 1970s and ‘80s, FALN claimed credit for more than 100 bombings in New York, Washington, Chicago, and other cities. The lethal Fraunces Tavern bombing in 1975 is the best known and deadliest of them. The historic tavern, close to Wall Street, was a popular lunch spot in the financial district. FALN thugs took credit for having blown it up “with reactionary corporate executives inside.”

Prior to forensic use of DNA in court, no definitive physical evidence was available to support the overwhelming circumstantial case against Lopez-Rivera. (See Matthew Hennessey’s essay “A Terrorist’s Fan Base” in City Journal for a sterling synopsis of his arrest and conviction.) Guilty of six murders, scores of maimings, and millions of dollars in property damage, he was convicted for felony conspiracy and sentenced to 55 years in federal prison in 1981. (He earned an additional 15 years for attempting to escape Leavenworth in 1988.)

The penitentiary provided a stage for his crafted role as a prisoner of conscience. The Left rallied to him as an anti-colonial freedom fighter, an independence activist, and political prisoner—Puerto Rico’s Nelson Mandela.

Lopez-Rivera’s co-conspirator, explosives expert William Morales, operated a FALN bomb factory in Queens and was implicated in the Fraunces Tavern bombing. He escaped to Mexico, then fled to Cuba where he still lives, and where the movement to free Lopez-Rivera has been kept alive by Fidelistas as a symbolic slap at the United States. (Note the “Free Lopez-Rivera Now” sign next to the pope’s motorcade in Havana.)

Pope Francis Brokers Pro-Communist Political Deals

Enter Pope Francis. Readers will recall that Francis facilitated the normalization of U.S. relations with Cuba. Colluding secretly with Obama in defiance of a constitutional demand that two-thirds of Congress approve treaty terms, Francis enlisted Sean O’Malley, archbishop of Boston, and Theodore McCarrick, retired archbishop of Washington DC to help broker a kiss-off to the rule of law. Both prelates flew to Cuba with Francis in 2015 and attended Mass in Revolution Square, under a massive image of Che Guevara.

In his 40-minute heart-to-heart with Castro after Mass (“very familiar, fraternal and friendly,” said Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi), did the subject of Lopez-Rivera come up? All we know is that the American-born Morales still remains on the FBI’s list of most-wanted domestic terrorists. Apparently, then, he was not included in the prisoner exchange that was central to Obama removing Cuba from the list of terror-sponsoring states. (The exchange contradicted the public claim of Cuban cardinal Jaime Ortega, archbishop of Havana, that no political prisoners exist in Havana.)

From Cuba, Francis flew to the United States, where he was greeted in East Harlem by Melissa Mark-Viverito, the speaker of New York’s ultra-left City Council and a devoted fan of the terrorist. A native of Puerto Rico, she dedicated the 2014 Puerto Rican Day parade to “the jailed nationalist,” and has regularly visited him in prison over several years. The speaker admitted to having visited him three times in the nine months prior to Francis’ 2015 visit.

From one of those visits she brought back a gift from the convict intended for Francis—a painting of the pope by Lopez-Rivera himself. Art therapy has its uses. She broadcast the stunt in a flurry of self-ennobling tweets picked up by Politico: “Oscar has told me he is encouraged by @Pontifex message of reconciliation, building bridges, & dialogue as a way overcoming hostilities,” Mark-Vivarito tweeted. “It was discussed and I agreed that I would attempt to present the painting as a gift to @Pontifex during his visit.”

Reconciliation. Dialogue. These are media-conscious words from a violent extremist who preferred dynamite to dialogue. And this is my favorite tweet: “@Pontifex more than gracious w/his time, his interest piqued when I shared that gift was from a prisoner I visited in jail.”

A prisoner. None in particular. Just one of the many anonymous, marginalized people whom a righteous woman meets visiting the imprisoned, a corporal work of mercy. In short, papal connivance with the commutation of Lopez-Rivera’s sentence was not spontaneous. Francis’ mercy-mongering on his behalf had been in the works more than a year.

Our Kind of Power Transcends Your Petty Boundaries

Yes, New York is a sanctuary city controlled by Democrats. Yes, the larger the Latino population, the tighter liberal Democrat control, and the more powerful Latino politicians. But the rationale goes deeper than political maneuvering and ethnic power plays. There is a kind of gnosticism at work in this pontificate that binds it to the cynical, tribal rationalizations of power traffickers like Mark-Vivarito.

She and Pope Francis view American immigration law—insofar as it concerns a chosen demographic—as invalid. In February, 2016, the City Council agenda included legislation that would give illegal aliens the right to vote in New York City’s 2017 elections for mayor, comptroller, public advocate, borough president, and City Council. In other words, for the city’s total system of governance and financial accounting.

Doubtless, the Holy Father smiles on the initiative. Letting non-citizens vote grants power to an abstraction that enchants Francis: “the excluded,” or “the discards of society.” On the way home from Mexico a year ago, Francis said: “The word people is not a logical category, it is a mystical category.” He later tuned that remark this way: “In the sense that everything the people does is good,” it is better to say “mythical.”

Francis is not bound by rational structures: “It takes a myth to understand the people.” More antinomian {emphasis by Abyssum} than Catholic, Francis answers to a vision that, in his words, “transcends the logical proceedings of formal democracy.” The rule of law—a rational thing with its impoverished categories and dogmatic judgments—must bend for The People. It is a romance gone gray, but Francis would rejuvenate it.

For Italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo—influential among European leftists for his triple status as Communist, Catholic, and gay—Francis is the leader of a global revolution, a new “communist and papal” International. In an interview that appeared in Argentina’s La Nacion on November 23, 2014, Vattimo argued that the Catholic Church itself could be understood as the last Socialist International and that Francisco, the voice of the voiceless and marginalized, is the spear carrier for “an alternative world to that of the capitalisms of the developed countries.”

That is the vision that Oscar Lopez-Rivera and kindred executioners kill for.

HOMILY FOR THE SIXTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR – CYCLE A

HOMILY FOR THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

CYCLE A

BISHOP RENE HENRY GRACIDA

“DO NOT THINK THAT I HAVE COME TO ABOLISH THE LAW

OR THE PROPHETS.

I HAVE NOT COME TO ABOLISH

BUT TO FULFILL.

I SAY TO YOU,

UNTIL HEAVEN AND EARTH PASS AWAY,

NOT THE SMALLEST LETTER OR THE SMALLEST PART OF A LETTER WILL PASS FROM THE LAW,

UNTIL ALL THINGS HAVE TAKEN PLACE.”

In the fourteen centuries between the time when the books of Deuteronomy, Leviticus and Numbers were written the elaborate system of ritual law had formed the Jewish people into a law dominated society.  Every aspect of life and worship was regulated by law and the Pharisees were the ritual police.

Inevitably the preaching of Jesus would begin to raise questions about  the continued force of the law handed down by the prophets.

As Saint Paul put it in 2 Timothy:

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.            2 Timothy 4:3

It did not take long for the time Saint Paul was predicting to arrive.

Within the first century of the Christian era men and women began to interpret the Gospel of Jesus Christ in ways that promoted heresy.  Practically all of the heresies that have appeared in the past two thousand years have the common denominator of antinomianism.

What is antinomianism?

ANTINOMIANISM is the heretical doctrine that holds that a person’s faith

in the divine love and/or divine mercy of God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)

frees him from the obligations of law, whether natural, positive, moral,  Divine , Scriptural or Ecclesiastical.

It may seem incredible that the clear teaching of Jesus regarding the relationship of what he was preaching and the law given by God to the Israelites should be in conflict given the clarity with which he taught as we heard in today’s Gospel reading.

But, as Saint Paul warned, men and women, with ears itching, have sought out teachers who present new ways in which they are excused from the observance of law.  Antinomianism offers the easy way to live a nominal Christian life; one can “have one’s cake and eat it too.”

The New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia has this to say about antinomianism:

The sixth session of the Ecumenical Council of Trent was occupied with this subject (ANTINOMIANISM) and published its famous decree on Justification. The fifteenth chapter of this decree is directly concerned with Antinomian heresy, and condemns it in the following terms:

“In opposition also to the cunning wits of certain men who, by good works and fair speeches, deceive the hearts of the innocent, it is to be maintained that the received grace of justification is lost not only by the infidelity, in which even faith itself is lost, but also by any other mortal sin whatsoever, though faith be not lost; thereby defending the doctrine of the Divine law, which excludes from the King of God not only the unbelieving, but also the faithful who are fornicators, adulterers, effeminate abusers of themselves with mankind, thieves, covetous, drunkards, revilers, extortioners, and all others who commit deadly sins; from which, with the help of Divine grace, they are able to refrain and on account of which they are separate from the grace of Christ” (Cap. xv, cf. also Cap. xii). Also, among the canons anathematizing (that is, imposing the most solemn form of excommunication) the various erroneous doctrines advanced by the Reformers as to the meaning and nature of justification are to be found in the following:

Canons Of the Council of Trent Concerning Justification

Canon 12.
If anyone says that justifying faith is nothing else than confidence in divine mercy,[117] which remits sins for Christ’s sake, or that it is this confidence alone that justifies us, let him be anathema.

Canon 14.
If anyone says that man is absolved from his sins and justified because he firmly believes that he is absolved and justified,[118] or that no one is truly justified except him who believes himself justified, and that by this faith alone absolution and justification are effected, let him be anathema.

Canon 18.
If anyone says that the commandments of God are, even for one that is justified and constituted in grace,[121] impossible to observe, let him be anathema.

Canon 20.
If anyone says that a man who is justified and however perfect is not bound to observe the commandments of God and the Church, but only to believe,[122] as if the Gospel were a bare and absolute promise of eternal life without the condition of observing the commandments, let him be anathema.

Canon 21.
If anyone says that Christ Jesus was given by God to men as a redeemer in whom to trust, and not also as a legislator whom to obey, let him be anathema.

Canon 27.
If anyone says that there is no mortal sin except that of unbelief,[129] or that grace once received is not lost through any other sin however grievous and enormous except by that of unbelief, let him be anathema.

Canon 29.
If anyone says that he who has fallen after baptism cannot by the grace of God rise again,[130] or that he can indeed recover again the lost justice but by faith alone without the sacrament of penance, contrary to what the holy Roman and Universal Church, instructed by Christ the Lord and His Apostles, has hitherto professed, observed and taught, let him be anathema.

Canon 30.
If anyone says that after the reception of the grace of justification the guilt is so remitted and the debt of eternal punishment so blotted out to every repentant sinner, that no debt of temporal punishment remains to be discharged either in this world[131] or in purgatory before the gates of heaven can be opened,[132] let him be anathema.

Anathema is a major excommunication which is to be promulgated with great solemnity. A formula for this ceremony was drawn up by Pope Zachary (741-52).

If you saw the movie, BECKET, starring Peter O’Toole and Richard Burton you may recall the scene in which Becket, played by Burton, anathematizes Lord Gilbert, an English Baron who murdered a priest.

Saint Thomas a Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, stood in front of the altar in Canterbury cathedral flanked by twelve priests, each holding a lighted candle, as the Archbishop pronounced the penalty of anathema and at the end of the reading of the imposition of the penalty the priests dramatically throw their candles to the floor.

The Church no longer has such a rite of imposing the penalty of anathema on anyone; the Code of Canon Law of 1983 promulgated by Saint John Paul II does not contain the word.

But even though the rite no longer exists, the reality of anathema does exist since it is so clearly expressed in the New Testament.

Take to heart what Our Lord Jesus Christ said about observing God’s law, keep the commandments and the other expressions of God’ law.  Do not be misled by those cardinals and bishops who interpret Amoris  Laetitia in ways that promote the very sins that the decrees of the Council of Trent name.  The decrees of the Council of Trent have never been revoked.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CAN RESULT IN MIRACLES, TRY IT, YOU WILL BE SURPRISED !!!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

BY

FATHER GEORGE W. RUTLER

11 FEBRUARY 17

Europe and its contiguous lands were in a chaotic condition in 1240: the Mongols were destroying Kiev, the Novgorod army virtually wiped out the Swedes along the Neva River, and the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II, was pillaging the Papal States using Islamic Saracens as his mercenaries. Pope Gregory IX’s attempt to rally a Crusade against the invaders failed, and his good friend Saint Clare was virtually bedridden as the Saracens besieged her convent at San Damiano. Her beloved Francis of Assisi had died fourteen years before. In this emergency, she left her invalid couch, went to the window and exposed the Blessed Sacrament in a silver and ivory ciborium, and the alien troops fled.

In northern Mexico until just a few years ago, drug- and gang-related violence had made Ciudad Juarez one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Following the example of Saint Clare, missionaries turned to the Eucharistic Lord for help. A perpetual adoration chapel was opened in 2013 when the murder rate was forty people a day, with soldiers and policemen joining the gangs. Increasing numbers of devotees urged the soldiers to join them in Holy Hours. Few now dismiss as only coincidence the fact that within five years the annual murder rate dropped from 3,766 to 256.

That rate is far lower than many cities in the United States now. With dismaying insouciance, statisticians in our nation over recent years have coldly taken for granted its moral decay. Besides graphic violence in the streets, there are over 500,000 abortions each year. In many places, births out of wedlock are the norm, teenage suicide has doubled in little more than a decade, 40% of all children live in broken homes, school diplomas and college degrees have generally become meaningless, marriage has been redefined into surreality, and freedom of religion has been intimidated by false readings of constitutional rights.

Recent political shifts in our nation offer a faint glimmer of genuine promise for a change in all this, as more people realize that in the past they had placed their confidence in gossamer hopes and tinsel messiahs. But the ballot box is no substitute for the Tabernacle. A well-known Pentecostal preacher surprisingly admitted that most miracles happen in the Catholic Church because “Catholic people revere the Eucharist.” If more Catholics themselves understood that, there would be more miracles. Now, miracles do not contradict nature: they are God’s will at work at high speed. Christ promised to be with us “until the end of the world.” Eucharistic adoration is simply the recognition of his presence. Saint Clare prayed, “My Lord, if it is your wish, protect this city which is sustained by your love.” The Lord answered, “It will have to undergo trials, but it will be defended by my protection.”

DECAPITATION (REMOVAL OF RED HATS) IS ABOUT TO BEGIN IN THE VATICAN. CARDINAL RED DOES SIGNIFY MARTYRDOM AFTER ALL !!!

Cardinal Gerhard Müller Receives Sharp Criticism for His Recent Il Timone Interview

Google+PinterestPocket

Today, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, is the 39th Anniversary of Cardinal Gerhard Müller’s Priestly Ordination. And exactly on that same day, a piece of news comes to us according to which Cardinal Müller is now under increasing pressure for having recently given an interview to the Italian journal Il Timone; in that interview, the German cardinal had made it clear that “For Catholic doctrine, it is impossible for mortal sin to coexist with sanctifying grace.” He also repeated the Catholic Church’s teaching according to which the “remarried” divorcees may not have access to the Sacraments unless they live “as brother and sister,” according to the 1981 papal document, Familaris Consortio, 84. With this interview, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has given an indirect answer to the Four Cardinals’ dubia which have been presented to Pope Francisin November of 2016.

This very interview has now provoked harsh criticism in Italy. It nearly seems as if his dismissal is being prepared by rebuking him for his disloyalty toward Pope Francis. In the following, we publish a translation of an article published today by the same man who conducted the Il Timone interview, Riccardo Cascioli. Mr. Andrew Guernsey was so kind and generous once more to provide a translation of this new article. Furthermore, Guernsey added some excerpts from a 10 February article written by the Vatican expert and close confidant of the pope, Andrea Tornielli. Tornielli’s articles are often regarded as expressing the voice of the pope. Thus his indirect criticism of Cardinal Müller might also be of greater-than-average significance. (It is Tornielli whom Cascioli refers to as “The Vatican Sniper,” for reasons explained here.)

Before going to the translations, I would add one thought. If Pope Francis were to decide to put Cardinal Müller — whose current five-year term is ending, and who would need to be re-appointed next July — out of his office, he might well offend Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, who had called Müller to that very office. Secondly, he might not realize that Müller henceforth — after his dismissal and with all of his usual respect toward Pope Francis — might become a mightier and more influential critic of his papacy than the constraints of his current office seem to allow. I have observed several Catholic conservative journalists who have wished for quite some time that Cardinal Müller would be freed from his duties so that he may be stronger in his public defense of the traditional Catholic teaching on marriage.

As we say, God’s will be done. And everything will work unto His Glory for those who love Him and obey Him.

And They Continued to Call Him the Vatican Sniper

Riccardo Cascioli

La Nuova BQ

2/11/2017

Translated by Andrew Guernsey

It took a few days to sort things out after the interview published in the monthly magazine “Il Timone”. But now the decision has been made, the word of command has been given: to eliminate Cardinal Müller. His words in defense of the doctrine – he who is the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith – evidently have given much annoyance, and were judged not in line with the intentions of the Pope. In the interview, Müller points out that Amoris Laetitia cannot be interpreted in discontinuity with the previous Magisterium, according to which there is no communion for the divorced and remarried, and that it must be remembered in the ecumenical process that Luther has corroded the content of Revelation.

Two challenges were issued both to the bishops and to Pope Francis, which certainly enraged them: and the super-sniper, the Vatican Sniper, came into action. Yesterday [he published] a long article retracing, in the last 50 years, the history of disagreements between Popes and their closest collaborators, the Secretary of State or the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. We find, therefore, that differences about some decisions have always been there but were resolved in private, also with the willingness of the collaborators to resign if the Pope did not listen to reason. Today, however, the Vatican Sniper complains, these cardinals speak through newspapers. The invitation is clear: Cardinal Müller should resign. Some will object: nowhere in the article is Cardinal Müller named. This is true, but this is classic clerical style: when someone ought to be eliminated he is not challenged directly, he is made to feel a hostile atmosphere that grows around him, allusions are made, are insinuated, oblique messages are sent. Moreover, by doing so one is made to understand that it is not a personal problem, the same fate can fall upon anyone else who stands in the same way. Today it is Müller’s turn, but the message must also get to other well-known names.

But meanwhile, since the signal has been given, the crossfire has already begun: Alberto Melloni of La Repubblica had already said, ahead of time a few days ago, that for only half of what Cardinal Muller has done and said, Pius XII would have taken away the cardinal’s hat. On Panorama.it, in an article by Orazio La Rocca dedicated to the booklet put out by Cardinal Coccopalmerio, which justifies communion for divorced and remarried, a little thought for Müller is not lacking: To make the dubia public is “a gesture of blatant disrespect towards the Pope,” and it is equally disrespectful to make use of interviews: “As, for example, German Gerhard Ludwig Muller cardinal, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has done in recent days, who in a newspaper has openly criticized the admission to the sacraments of the cohabitating and the divorced and remarried because, he warned, “you do not touch” Doctrine. Curious: to defend doctrine today has become a point of accusation.

And who knows what will await us in the coming days. Surely the tones are becoming ever more violent, and Cardinal Raymond L. Burke can testify to it: after being deprived of authority as the spiritual leader of the Knights of Malta, after having suffered repeated attacks from the usual Guardians of the Revolution, yesterday, February 10, he was the target of a most violent article in the Washington Post, which demands – with a certain conceit and arrogance, it must be said – that the Pope throw him out of Rome, where he could obstruct the path of reform that Francis is carrying out with success. The author of the article, Emma-Kate Symons, is notoriously far off from Catholic views – it is indeed curious that those who care so much about the path of reform of the Church are those who hate it – but she seems to be terrified by a possible alliance between Burke and the Trump administration that (it is not clear how) could facilitate the rise of fascism in Europe.

This is a madness typical of the 1970s, but the violence of the words (even in Italy) prompts us not to underestimate the phenomenon.

The Dossier and Undermining the Pope in the Press, All Have Been Seen Before

Continuity and discontinuity: corrosive articles and the maneuvers of prelates, the precedent of 1962. But today the curial style has changed

Andrea Tornielli

La Stampa

2/10/2017

Translated by Andrew Guernsey

[Bolding used by Tornielli]

The drama and aggravation of tone that accompany certain media polemics on the current pontificate can make one think that we find ourselves in an unprecedented situation. It is not so: the posters in the streets of Rome in the faux popular Roman style (received by the Pope with a laugh), as well as newspaper articles that, well beyond legitimate criticism, attempt to undermine anything in the Successor of Peter says or does, are part of a “tradition” that sees in the media a pawn of the internal power struggles of the Curia and the Church. The recent history of the Holy See, together with the constant repetition of a few, however, also highlights the discontinuities: one of these concerns certainly the style and attitude of those who work most closely with the Pope, on the part of curial cardinals. The most authoritative and influential “ministers of the Pope” until the other day were, in fact, accustomed to talk face to face with their superior, not to distance themselves from him publicly.

[…]

One of the major novelties of the present season, however, is represented by the repeated public statements of cardinals “ministers” of the Pope and his collaborators in the Roman Curia. Critical statements, even in the press, on the part of bishops and cardinals with respect to some papal decisions are not unheard of: it would be enough here to recall certain statements following the publication of Paul VI’s “Humanae Vitae.” But in that case it had been the cardinal or resident bishops (or, as happened a few years earlier in the case of a booklet strongly opposed to the liturgical reform, by curial cardinals emeritus, no longer in office) [the Ottaviani Intervention]. An example of the style of the past is represented by Joseph Ratzinger. It is no secret, for example, that the ideas of the then-Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, did not always coincide with those of the Pope, John Paul II. […] There was some difference of opinion, for example, on the occasion of the first interreligious meeting in Assisi.  These differences of opinion, however, were presented and discussed in the context of the personal relationship between the cardinal and the Pope, in audiences at table or meetings requested ad hoc. Contrary to what happens today with the practice become commonplace, one would search in vain, when Ratzinger was Prefect of the Doctrine of the Faith, to find some public statement of his that seemed to distance himself from Pope John Paul II.

[…] Examples of the old curial style. the closest and most authoritative collaborators of the Pope, at the helm of the most important dicasteries, expressed their positions in face to face meetings with their superior – willing, in some rare cases, even to give up their posts in order to defend them – without any of this to be found at all reflected in public statements, as instead is the case today.

Debunking the Washington Post’s Creepy Cardinal Burke Conspiracy

On 9 February, the Washington Post ran a disgraceful and bizarre opinion piece designed to join the burgeoning propaganda efforts to link Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke to U.S. presidential adviser Stephen Bannon and President Donald Trump’s White House. From that alliance, the story goes, Bannon, through Burke, is plotting to bring the Trump administration into a conflict with Pope Francis.

The Post opinion piece is linked here. There there have been several other similar “news” stories run over the last several days at major outlets, including on the NPR website.

The point of this obviously coordinated campaign is entirely unclear. The Washington Post piece is especially incoherent and mendacious. Thus, we should briefly review the charges lodged therein against Cardinal Burke.

Count 1: Cardinal Burke is a friend and partisan of Stephen Bannon because Burke serves on the board of advisers of a group, Dignitatis Humanae, run by a man who has written a few opinion pieces on Breitbart.com, a website formerly run by Bannon. Get it?

The writer fails to mention that the board of advisers consists of several cardinals, including liberals Cormac Murphy-O’Connor and Peter Turkson, a man who has run around the world promoting the pope’s climate agenda.

Bannon’s formal or informal affiliation with the group is not explained, nor is there any evidence that Burke even knows Bannon.

Count 2: Cardinal Burke supports alleged Benito Mussolini fan Matteo Silvini, an Italian politician with whom the writer claims Burke held “a long meeting.” To support the claim, the writer cites an Italian newspaper report that Silvini was at the Vatican recently and may have met with Burke, but no one confirmed that the meeting actually occurred. So, as you see, Cardinal Burke is a partisan of the Fascist Party.  {This is just too crazy!!!  The Editor of the Washington Post must have been asleep when the copy for this article came across his desk!!!  No responsible editor would let such unsubstantiated copy appear in the paper.}

Count 3: Cardinal Burke is engaged in “bellicose anti-Islam rhetoric” that may lead to the rise of a new Hitler in Europe. Evidence offered: a link to a USA Today story about Bannon’s supposed views of Muslims. Evidence of Burke’s Koran-burning rallies: zero. {There is not evidence offered, only a link to another journalist’s unsubstantiated allegation – is this journalism ???}

Count 4: Cardinal Burke said something nice about Vladimir Putin. Yes, Cardinal Burke said in an interview that he agrees with Putin’s supposed defense of traditional marriage and family life and refused to foreclose the possibility of Putin’s conversion. Let’s hear it for the Year of Mercy!  {Because Trump said something nice about Putin the Trump-haters will now smear anyone who says anything nice about Putin.}

The readers of the Washington Post should know this: Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke is a hero to thousands and thousands of Catholics around the world. In the face of constant abuse and calumny, this mild-mannered Midwesterner has stood fast by the constant and unchanging doctrinal teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. His principal crime is that he wishes to clearly express these teachings without the shamefaced obfuscation that has led so many to disregard them.

And Cardinal Burke is, of course, the most prominent and unapologetic proponent of the priceless treasure that is the Church’s traditional Sacred Liturgy. For this alone, he deserves the gratitude of the entire body of the faithful, but he has instead earned the scorn of the misguided and foolish clerics who loathe their own Tradition.

He is a shepherd to the flock, whereas so many of his brother bishops have thrown down their crooks to mill about as sheep, buffeted here and there by the modernist secular world and scattered, as the Apostles before Calvary, by a crackpot papacy.

I, a humble layman, rise to his defense on this day, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Chinese Cardinals Clash Over Vatican-China Agreement

It was a statement that raised eyebrows among those who have long followed the history of Christianity under Communist regimes, of which China is certainly no exception. China, in fact, is ranked independently as one of the worst violators of religious freedom in the world. In 1951, under the leadership of Chinese Communist revolutionary and founder of the People’s Republic of China, Mao Zedong, the Chinese government and the Vatican officially severed diplomatic ties. With the officially-sanctioned Catholic Patriotic Association following a similar line to that of the portions of the French Church that went along with the Revolutionary Government’s “Civil Constitution of the Clergy” in 1790, the formation of an underground — and persecuted — Church in China was inevitable.

In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI said that the Catholic Patriotic Association was “incompatible with Catholic doctrine,” and spoke of their interference with the ordination of bishops as a matter he could not permit if he wanted to. “The authority of the Pope to appoint bishops is given to the church by its founder Jesus Christ.” He said. “It is not the property of the Pope, neither can the Pope give it to others.”

But under Pope Francis, the Vatican has been moving toward what Cardinal Joseph Zen, bishop emeritus of Hong Kong, calls a “new Ostpolitik.” From early in his papacy, Francis has been moving toward more positive relations with Beijing, though as the outspoken Zen has warned, signing agreement with Chinese leadership “means delivering the authority to appoint bishops into the hands of an atheist government.” It was only ten years ago that the late Cardinal Kung spoke of the plight of Chinese Catholics who will not participate in the state-sanctioned analog of the Catholic Church:

I believe that most if not all of you who are here today understand that there is no religious freedom in China. Yet you may be shocked to learn that all of the approximately 40 underground bishops in China have been either arrested and are now in jail, or under house arrest, or under strict surveillance, or in hiding, or simply have disappeared.

We know for sure that six bishops are now in jail. … They are all in their 70’s or 80’s. Three of them have disappeared. (HAN, Shi and SU). Out of these three, Bishop Su has disappeared for approximately 10 years, Bishop Han has just disappeared approximately one year ago after being detained approximately 5 years, Bishop SHI has disappeared almost six years. We do not know whether they are dead or alive.

[…]

Priests, seminarians, nuns and laypersons face similar harassment. We know for sure that there are approximately 25 of them in jail or in labor camps. This list is by no means complete, because of the difficulties in obtaining details. Many cases are not reported here. My educated guess is that there are hundreds in jail. Sometimes, the government simply removes a priest or bishop and do not place them into the jail system, so that there is no official record of this religious prisoner. This is one of the new methods of persecuting the underground church.

Cardinal John Tong, the Pope Benedict-appointed successor to Carzinal Zen’s see in Hong Kong, is more sanguine about the development:

China and the Vatican have reached consensus on the appointment of bishops, which will lead to the resolution of other outstanding problems, Hong Kong Cardinal John Tong has said.

“From now on, there will be no more the crisis of a division between the open and underground communities in the Church in China,” the cardinal said.

“On the contrary, these two communities will gradually move toward reconciliation and communion on the aspects of law, pastoral care and relationships. The Church in China will work together to preach the gospel of Jesus on the soil of China.”

In a letter published on Thursday, Cardinal Tong noted that China and the Vatican have different interests, so they will prioritise remaining problems differently.

[…]

Cardinal Tong said the Sino-Vatican dialogue indicates that China now will “let the Pope play a role in the nomination and ordination of Chinese bishops.” Since, under Church law, the Pope has the final say in the appointment of bishops, this would solve several problems, he said.

“Beijing will also recognise the Pope’s right of veto and that the Pope is the highest and final authority in deciding on candidates for bishops in China,” he said.

The Catholic Patriotic Association advocates the “self-nomination and self-ordination” of bishops, but if the agreement on papal approval of bishops is reached, that principle will become history, he said.

“If the Pope has the final word about the worthiness and suitability of an episcopal candidate, the elections of local churches and the recommendations of the Bishops’ Conference of the Catholic Church in China will simply be a way to express recommendations,” Cardinal Tong said.

Thus far, Cardinal Zen has not spoken out on the most recent developments in Sino-Vatican relations. But in November of last year, he made clear, once again, his opposition to any such agreement, calling it “absolutely unacceptable”:

Rome would commit to recognize as bishops only those clerics who first win nomination from the Patriotic Association’s bishops conference. This would make the church “totally subservient to an atheist government,” says Cardinal Zen, and may require the Vatican to cut ties to the true church underground.

Though he says state-backed bishops are generally “wonderful men” and “very faithful to the church,” Cardinal Zen laments that all are nonetheless “slaves” and “puppets.” Only someone ignorant of communism, he says, could think the nominations the government sends to Rome wouldn’t be coerced. Having taught in Chinese seminaries from 1989 to 1996, he recalls that state bishops couldn’t meet or even place international calls without government bosses present.

Cardinal Zen slams Vatican diplomats who say that embracing the Patriotic Association is needed to preserve the church’s hierarchy and sacraments. “I would prefer no bishops,” he says. “With fake bishops you are destroying the church.”

That’s what nearly happened in Hungary and other Soviet satellites in the 1970s after Rome embraced an Ostpolitik (“Eastern Policy”) of cooperation with Communist authorities. “The Churches in those countries have not been saved through the Vatican diplomacy,” he wrote recently, “but thanks to the unswerving faith of the simple faithful!”

He believes the same would happen in China if the Vatican refused to bow to Beijing. “The underground church is evangelizing very well,” he notes, even as authorities have destroyed 1,000 church crosses since 2013 and kept underground bishop James Su Zhimin in secret detention for two decades. “Also in the official church there are so many good people. . . . They are not afraid. Why should you surrender?”

“Pope Francis has no real knowledge of communism,” the cardinal laments. He blames Francis’ experience in Argentina, where military dictators and rich elites did evil while actual or accused communists suffered trying to help the downtrodden. “So the Holy Father knew the persecuted communists, not the communist persecutors. He knew the communists killed by the government, not the communist governments who killed thousands and hundreds of thousands of people.” (In China it was tens of millions.)

“I’m sorry to say that in his goodwill he has done many things which are simply ridiculous,” the cardinal says of the pope. These include his approaches to both China and Cuba, the other communist state he has courted at the apparent expense of human rights. But still he’s the pope, so even if he signs a bad deal Cardinal Zen says he won’t protest once it’s done.

His message to the faithful in that case: You’re never obligated to act against conscience. “You are not bound to join the Patriotic Association. You can pray at home if you lose your churches.” An underground priest who loses his flock can go home and till the soil. “You’re still a priest anyway,” he says. “So wait for better times. But don’t rebel against the pope.”

The Cardinal’s concerns may fall on deaf ears in Rome, but his warnings will be taken to heart by Catholics around the world. “You’re never obligated to act against conscience.” “You can pray at home if you lose your churches.” As it appears more and more likely that Catholics outside of China will be facing similar choices, wisdom like this from one of the Church’s true apostles is a precious grace indeed.

RIGOR MORTIS OF THE MIND IS MORE DEADLY THAN RIGOR MORTIS OF THE BODY – PART TWO

47400b6822f5090564c584418c42951c

10 FEBRUARY 17

BY PETER AMOS COHEN

Response to the statement itself:

“Rigid thinking is not divine because Jesus assumed our flesh, which is not rigid except at the time of death,” Pope Francis.

What does “rigid” mean here? Rigid is a pejorative term for immutable, unchanging. Like Obama, Pope Francis is the agent of change — the Heraclitus of pastors. Substitute immutable or unchanging for “rigid.”

Translation of the statement: Francis reasons that God is not rigid (i.e. immutable) because God is revealed through the flesh of Christ which is mutable, changing, not rigid. Therefore, if we are to have Godly-thinking we ought to have mutable and changing, not rigid, thinking.

Problems: The heresy in the statement centers on what it means to be a man.

Jesus did not just assume our flesh. He became man. While the flesh is always changing (in flux, not rigid); human nature is not. It is true to say that Jesus’ flesh was changing, not rigid (i.e. immutable); but it is false to say that his human nature and divine nature were changing. Christ’s human nature and divine nature remain the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow: they are immutable and unchanging, (i.e. rigid).

Simple response: Francis denies that God is revealed through the unchanging parts of Christ’s human nature. God is revealed only through the flesh of Christ, not through his humanity (the unchanging part).

More Philosophical response:

Francis denies the existence of the unchanging parts of human nature, and reduces them to the changing parts, due to his German existentialism. He, ultimately, denies the essences of things.

LIKE A BACH FUGUE, DIFFERENT GERMAN BISHOPS ARE PLAYING DIFFERENT TUNES WITH THE FAITH

KASPER & MARX

Cardinals Kasper and Marx (Not Karl)

Mixed Signals from the German Amoris Laetitia Guidelines

CRISIS MAGAZINE
FEBRUARY 10, 2017

The latest news from Germany does not engender confidence that the Catholic bishops have had any success in resolving the myriad problems that have plagued the Church over the past several decades.  In an interview in the February issue of the Catholic Italian monthly Il Timone, Cardinal Müller said, “one cannot say there are circumstances in which adultery is not a grave sin.” The German bishops in their recently published guidelines regarding Amoris Laetitia (AL) state the opposite, quoting the Holy Father no less. Philadelphia prohibits the admission of the divorced and remarried to the Eucharist, while Argentina allows it in some cases with the blessing of the Holy Father. The bishop of Malta and the bishop of Gozo leave it to the conscience of the individual while the German bishops do the same while claiming this is not wholesale admittance to the sacraments for all. If this is not a time of crisis, I don’t know what is. A closer look at recent developments in Germany may offer clarity and insight into the diverse reactions to Amoris Laetitia worldwide and how orthodox faithful can best respond.

It would be unfair to blame Germans for all that is wrong in the Church. Indeed, two of the four cardinals who signed the dubia (Meisner and Brandmüller) and one who supported it later (Cordes) are Germans. Some might have wished for a different manner of formulating the dubia, or indeed of not making them public, but these questions to the Holy Father should be seen at the very least as the expression of worry and confusion among the faithful. They, as well as the petition from the Confraternities of the Clergy in the US, Britain and Australia, and Ireland, representing over 1000 priests throughout the world, are a call for clarification.

What exactly do the German bishops say in their guidelines published February 1, 2017? Much of it is good: they demand a better preparation for the sacrament of marriage, help for married couples in difficulty and sensitive accompaniment of those whose marriage has broken down. All of this is essential, and the lack of proper pastoral care for couples over the past decades helps explain the widespread breakdown of Catholic marriages. The German couple, Norbert and Renate Martin, who have belonged to the Pontifical Council for marriage and the family (now the Dicastery for laity, family and life) for 30 years, asked in their article in the Catholic newspaper, Die Tagespost, why these suggestions were not immediately adopted after John Paul II wrote Familiaris Consortio the year following the synod on the family in 1980. Furthermore, they rightly ask where the bishops will find people to provide this new pastoral support given that Church membership has been steadily declining over many decades. Their dramatic failure to reach people with the Gospel suggests that the real renewal needed is a conversion of the heart, a stripping away of worldly trappings asked for by Pope Benedict but adamantly refused by the German hierarchy.

The German bishops say that “at the end of such a process” of accompaniment and reintegration into the Church “there does not necessarily stand the reception of confession and the Eucharist.” Indeed, they explicitly deny that this should be understood as the automatic permission for everybody. Yet how realistic is this? Ultimately, as the text states, the individual must make the decision in the forum of his own conscience. We know where the suggestion of the German bishops in the Königsteiner Erklärung led, when they stated that the faithful should decide according to their own conscience whether or not to use contraception (though the current case is not identical in every respect). Here we are, 50 years later, with such a universal use of contraception that if one suggests otherwise in Germany, one is considered a fundamentalist of the worst kind.

The bishops say that laxity, as well as rigorism, should be avoided. Yet, holding on to doctrine does not imply rigorism as such. Rigorism occurs only when decisions are motivated by a judgmental spirit, with a lack of empathy and an unwillingness to help those in difficult situations. It is easy to accuse those who see these new pastoral guidelines as a weakening of the sacredness and indissolubility of marriage as pharisaical. However, self-righteousness is a danger for everyone regardless of his theological disposition. One can defend laxity in a rigorous and moralistic way, believing wrongly that this will offer protection from the charge of hypocrisy, while at the same time angrily condemn those who disagree. Unfortunately, the bishops’ guidelines themselves, as well as the practice in Germany over the past decades, have fallen into the trap of laxity, because of a false understanding of mercy.

The guidelines rightly state that the three steps of accompanying, discerning, and reintegrating the divorced and remarried are a great challenge. Yet Bishop Heiner Koch, the president of the episcopal commission on marriage and family in Germany, in his recent interview with Die Tagespost states that the priests in Germany are well trained and prepared to meet the challenge. I was surprised to read this since there is a widespread perception that priests have by and large received a confused, heterodox formation, lacking in spirituality, and understand themselves as social workers who have come to face the sad truth that they cannot help many people. For who can when relying mainly on weak human love instead of divine caritas?

Yet, the German-speaking episcopal world is not monolithic. The bishop of Augsburg, Konrad Zdarsa, said in an interview on February 3, to the Catholic TV channel KTV, that this approach meant burdening the priests with a tremendous responsibility for which many are not prepared. Furthermore, he thought the media were jumping to conclusions about supposedly admitting the divorced and remarried to the two sacraments in question. The bishop of Chur in Switzerland, Vitus Huondor, stated in a letter to his diocesan priests, that the admittance to communion could not be left to the subjective estimate of the person in question, but depended on objective criteria, namely living in fidelity to one’s first marriage vows, i.e., in chastity with one’s civilly remarried spouse.

One cannot help but think that Cardinal Müller had the Germans in mind, and was perhaps timing his recent interview in Il Timone accordingly, when he stated that AL “should be understood in light of the whole doctrine of the Church.” He certainly has interpreted it all along with Familiaris Consortio in mind, indicating that only those living chastely among the divorced and remarried were allowed to receive communion. In that same interview, he suggested that the bishops needed to read again what the last two councils have said about the role of the pope as well as the Church’s teachings on the seven sacraments. He “didn’t like that so many bishops interpret AL their own way, the way they wish to understand the teaching of the pope.” The bishops must not interpret the Holy Father but follow his clear instruction. But what to do if papal statements in AL are unclear to many?

When Müller says that nothing changes the fact that adultery is always a serious sin, he himself seems to be contradicting the pope in AL, which the German guidelines quote, namely that “not all who live in so-called ‘irregular’ situations are in a state of mortal sin” (AL 301).

One thing, however, is clear: the confusion surrounding AL has encouraged unreasonable expectations among divorced and remarried couples, while raising the possibility of conflict between parish priests and bishops who interpret AL differently.

In Germany, in any case, the thing is a done deal, as it has been for decades. Already in 1993, parts of the German bishops’ conference had wanted to support the proposal written by the bishops from the province of upper Rhenia to admit the divorced and remarried to communion, if they decided so in good conscience. This, however, was struck down by the CDF in 1994, but the practice has continued. Not many divorced and remarried couples will seek out the guidance of a priest if they are already allowed to decide on their own. The guidelines will only confirm them in their modus vivendi.

However, the discussion is anything but over within the universal Church. Which is why Müller reacted strangely when he told the Italian channel TG COM 24 that AL did not need further clarifications, an apparent response to the four cardinals who authored the dubia. Roma locuta, causa finita. But when Roma’s locuta is anything but clear, then it needs to speak again, before the causa is truly finita.
