WHY CAN’T CATHOLICS AGREE AT LEAST MOST OF THE TIME?

Is There a Split in the Catholic Church?

.
Some time ago a priest friend I’ll call Tony was discussing the problems he was having with some colleagues and parishioners.
Whenever he had an idea or tried to get something going he met resistance.
.
It wasn’t that his people and fellow priests didn’t like him. It wasn’t that they were angry, rebellious or ugly.
.
He said it was as if they were simply on a different wavelength. They were not connecting. They didn’t seem to have the same set of priorities. They couldn’t pull together and co operate on anything. They identified the problem in various ways.  Some thought it was a socio economic problem. Some folks around the table were better off than others. Some thought it was a racial problem. The folks around the table were of various ethnicities. Some thought it was just a personality problem.
.
I listened and finally said, “You know, this problem has nothing to do with any of those things.”
.
Tony said, “What’s the problem?”
.
“The real problem is that you are a faithful Catholic. You’re not an extreme traditionalist or anything, but you believe the Catholic faith. You are faithful in your adherence to the teachings of the church as much as you are able. Right?”
.
“Right”
.
“You believe the old, old story of a loving God and a rebellious humanity. You think the church’s main goal is to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, to heal the broken hearted and set the prisoners of sin free. You believe in the saving, precious blood of Jesus and the threat of hell and the hope of heaven. Right?”
.
“Of course” he grinned.
.
“Well, those other people don’t believe in all that. They think the Christian faith is simply about making the world a better place. They believe no one will go to hell because God is completely merciful. They therefore do not think it is necessary to preach about repentance of sin and salvation of souls. Consequently, their religion is one of social work and political activism. They are passionate about inequality and see people as victims rather than as guilty souls.”
.
“So the argument is theological?”
.
“Every argument is theological.”
.
“We’re really believe two different forms of Christianity.”
.
“It is more true to say that you believe in Christianity. They believe in something else which they have mistaken for Christianity.”
.

“No wonder we don’t get along.”
.
“How can you get along with those who seem to believe the same religion but, in fact, have a totally different set of perceptions, assumptions, beliefs and therefore a totally different set of priorities, agenda and goals?”
.
“Hmmmm”
.
“This divide goes deep within every branch of Christianity today. It doesn’t matter if they are Protestant or Catholic. The divide may not seem broad but it is  deep.”
.
“Very deep”
.
“It is a bottomless chasm. It is a Great Canyon. It is a pit with a small fissure on top that seems like nothing but which is everything.”
.
“What’s to be done?”
.
“Nothing I figure. Except to be aware of it. Realize that there are many Catholics who are not really Catholics at all. They are aliens in the church who wear all the right clothes and say all the right things but they follow a Christianity without a cross, sacraments without sacrifice and believe in a truth that has no boundaries so it is not truth at all. The will have heaven without hell and redemption without repentance. I suggest you learn to spot them, treat them with polite good will…”
.
“…as you might an retarded child”
.
“As you might an retarded child. Then pray for them and follow the Lord with great energy and joy. You may not have significant work to do with these interlopers. Don’t worry about it. Let them get on with their work and you get on with yours.”
.
“Pray, love, work and don’t worry.”
.
Exactly!

During the time of the Arian Heresy, in some places almost 97% of the clergy were heretics, including bishops. And I am sure the 97% asked the 3% who were faithful Catholics “Why can’t you all just get along with us?” Each of us today is called to speak truth to power, even if that is a member of the clergy who has power, but who is not faithful. One bishop back then, Athanasius, took on the heretics, called them Ariomaniacs, and was exiled over and over. Eventually truth prevailed. Athnasius is St. Athanasius and, since he was often in the minority against the organized heretical hierarchy, he was nicknamed Athanasius Contra Mundum-Athanasius Against the World. Each of us is called to be “against the world” if the world tries to spread what is not true. Speak truth to today’s church liberalmaniacs. Guy McClung, San Antonio

Yes. This is a good analysis of the division.

But something can be done about that.

We have to insist in explaining that the Catholic religion is strongly based on the law of Love.

People who believe that God is love therefore everything they do is forgiven or irrelevant do not understand love, therefore they do not understand God therefore they cannot hold that they are good Catholics and concentrate on other things like helping the poor.

When one is in love one is fascinated by the object of that love..we want to know everything about this person and we especially want to do everything that pleases that person.

Liberal Catholics do not understand that they need to love God and obey all His commandments!!! They will then understand the need to self-respect on their sins and make amends.
