Reverend Paul Scalia Delivered a Moving Homily at His Father’s Funeral
Reverend Paul Scalia, one of Antonin Scalia‘s nine children, delivered a very moving and personal homily about his father during his funeral this morning.
He said, “In the past week, many have recounted what dad did for them. But here, today, we recount what God did for dad, how he blessed him.”
Scalia spoke of his father’s deep faith and his love of his family, saying that God blessed him with “55 years of marriage to the woman he loved, a woman who could match him at every step, and even hold him accountable.”
He also shared a funny anecdote about his father once “found himself in my confessional line” and quickly left. Scalia said, “As he put it later, ‘Like heck if I’m confessing to you.’ The feeling was mutual.”
Reverend Scalia got particularly emotional as he talked about how much his father loved each of his children, even as he joked about his dad mixing up their names every once in a while.
“Every funeral reminds us,” he said, “of just how thin the veil is between this world and the next, between time and eternity, between the opportunity for conversion and the moment of judgment. So we cannot depart here unchanged.”
