I was consecrated a bishop on January 25, 1972. On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court issued a 7–2 decision in favor of Norma McCorvey (“Jane Roe”) that held that women in the United States have a fundamental right to choose whether or not to have abortions without excessive government restriction, and struck down Texas’s abortion ban as unconstitutional. I immediately declared publicly that abortion had become the Number One issue in every presidential election and I have continued to do so for the past FORTY-SEVEN YEARS !!!

You cannot give Holy Communion to the abortionists, to the abortion promoters and providers, to the divorce and remarried. You cannot do it. St. Paul said you do not feed the Eucharist to dogs. I am sorry to have to tell you that I had in 1977 to report to the bishop of another diocese that his seminarian had given Holy Communion to the Seminary’s mascot, a dog, at a private Mass celebrated by the Seminary’s Spiritual Director priest in his room, for a few seminarians. The bishop’s response to me: “Well after all the dog was the seminary mascot; there was nothing wrong with what the seminarian did.” Subsequently the bishop ordained that seminarian to the priesthood. Are we surprised by what is happening in the Church these days?
