The Church’s original social justice struggle

Abortion may dominate the news cycle, but there is nothing new about it.

Nor is the Church’s response to abortion different than it was in the first century.

Abortion was, in fact, the first social injustice confronted by Christians, plainly, passionately, and without qualification. 

In time, believers would similarly oppose slavery, capital punishment, and other institutions of pagan society. But the condemnation of abortion was singular in its consistency and vehemence from the very beginning of the Gospel proclamation.

The apostolic teaching 

Modern proponents of abortion sometimes argue that the issue is absent from the New Testament. But that is not the case.

In his Letter to the Galatians (5:19–20), St. Paul likely makes reference to drugs that were prescribed to induce abortion. “Now the works of the flesh are plain,” he says, “fornication, impurity, licentiousness” — and next in his list comes the Greek word “pharmakeia.”

We recognize the word instantly as the root of our English terms “pharmacy” and “pharmaceutical.” In English it is sometimes translated as “potions” or “drugs,” but also as “sorcery” or “magic.” The range of possibilities is real. The ancients drew no bright line between pharmacy and sorcery, and practitioners of one were often practitioners of the other. When Plato used the term “pharmakeia,” he used it to denote abortifacient drugs.

The context of Paul’s usage suggests that he intends the same meaning for the word. He places “pharmakeia” immediately after three words denoting sexual sins.

Related Greek terms (“pharmakeion,” “pharmakeusin,” “pharmakoi”) also turn up in the Book of Revelation (9:21, 21:8, and 22:15), and in every instance they appear in lists of immoral acts, adjacent to terms suggesting sexual sin.

This is not an imaginative reading of the text, propounded by conservative Christian interpreters. It is presented as fact in the standard academic history of contraception and abortion, “Eve’s Herbs,” written by pro-abortion historian John M. Riddle and published by Harvard University Press.

It is, moreover, confirmed by the unanimous interpretation of the early Church Fathers, beginning in the first century.

The next generation 

Consider the witness of the “Didache,” whose text, according to modern scholars, was compiled between A.D. 49 and A.D. 100.

The “Didache” presents Christian moral teaching within the sacramental dispensation of the Church. The opening line provides context for all that follows: “There are two Ways, one of Life and one of Death; but there is a great difference between the two Ways.”

At the outset, its moral teaching seems to be a simple recitation of the Ten Commandments: “Thou shalt not kill.” “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” “Thou shalt not steal.” But then comes a startling interpolation. In the midst of the familiar commandments, the “Didache” charges its readers: “Thou shalt not practice sorcery.” “Thou shalt not procure abortion.”

Thus, this earliest Christian document — which presents itself as “The Teaching of the Lord by the Twelve Apostles to the Gentiles” — places abortion among the primordial concerns of the Church and the most fundamental laws of God.

For those who transgress these norms, the early Church required repentance. “Thou shalt confess thy transgressions,” says the “Didache,” “and thou shalt not come to thy place of prayer with an evil conscience.” Later, the text declares the necessity of a previous confession of sins before eucharistic Communion, “that your sacrifice may be pure.”

The prohibition of abortion appears in identical language in the “Epistle of Barnabas,” which was written later in the same century: “Thou shalt not slay a child by procuring abortion.” The letter goes on to describe those who commit abortion as “murderers of children and destroyers of the workmanship of God.”

In the “Apocalypse of Peter,” an apocryphal document of the early part of the next century, the author claims to have seen a vision of hell that included the souls of many who had performed, sought, and otherwise “caused” abortions.

The great apologists

In the second century arose a movement known as the apologists, because they provided a well-reasoned explanation of the Christian faith. The word comes from the Greek “apologeisthai,” meaning “to speak in defense.”

Christian doctrine regarding abortion was something that required explanation and defense, because it was something that set Christians apart from almost every other culture and subculture on the planet. The pagan Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians, and Persians had no qualms about the practice; and it was condoned and even promoted by Socrates, Aristotle, Seneca, and many others.

Christians (and Jews) stood alone in their rejection of abortion. That required explanation.

In A.D. 177, Athenagoras of Athens addressed a respectful letter to the Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus. He addressed common misconceptions about his religion, and he spells out the common Christian belief about the sanctity of pre-born life. Christians, he said, “regard the very fetus in the womb as a created being, and therefore an object of God’s care.” Furthermore, he added, “those who use drugs to bring on abortion commit murder, and will have to give an account to God for the abortion.”

Another document from that time, the anonymous “Letter to Diognetus,” informs a Roman official that Christians “beget children, but they do not destroy their offspring,” and this very fact makes them different from their non-Christian neighbors.

Yet another contemporary, Minucius Felix, a North African practicing law in Rome, reported: “There are some women who, by drinking medical preparations, extinguish the source of the future man in their very bowels and thus commit a parricide before they bring forth. … To us [believers] it is not lawful either to see or hear of homicide.”Abortion was the first social injustice confronted by Christians, plainly, passionately, and without qualification. CLICK TO TWEET

These voices are joined by many others, but none so passionately and often as that of Tertullian, another North African jurist, who lived at the end of the second century.

He wrote, in his great “Apology”: “We may not destroy even the fetus in the womb. … To hinder a birth is merely a speedier man-killing.”

In another work, he said poetically that those who cause abortion “pour out the blood of the future.”

It was Tertullian who first stated explicitly what others only implied: that human life begins at conception.

Tertullian knew the reality of abortion. In his work “On the Soul,” he provides shockingly graphic descriptions of several methods of abortion commonly used, while also detailing the instruments involved.

“Among surgeons’ tools there is a certain instrument, which is formed with a nicely adjusted flexible frame for opening the uterus first of all and keeping it open; it is further furnished with an annular blade, by means of which the limbs [of the child] within the womb are dissected with anxious but unfaltering care; its last appendage being a blunted or covered hook, wherewith the entire fetus is extracted by a violent delivery.

“There is also a copper needle or spike, by which the actual death is managed in this furtive robbery of life. They give it, from its infanticide function, the name of … ‘the slayer of the infant.’ ”

To understand and explain such realities was a difficult but necessary task for a Christian like Tertullian, an intelligent believer who was active in public life.

Councils and discipline

Yet it was not only lay Christians who spoke about abortion. Bishops did, too, and with the full weight of their authority.

The Spanish hierarchy met in Elvira in 305 to consider a wide range of disciplinary matters. The bishops summarized their conclusions in a series of canons. Two dealt specifically with abortion, and prescribed that anyone guilty of the sin should be denied access to the sacraments until the end of life.

Nine years later, bishops met at Ancyra, the capital of Galatia, and invoked the “ancient law” as it was stated at Elvira, but “softened” the penalty, imposing only 10 years of exclusion from the sacraments.

The great churchmen of the fourth and fifth centuries — St. Basil, St. John Chrysostom, St. Jerome, St. Ambrose — all condemned abortion in the strongest terms, as had St. Cyprian, St. Hippolytus, and St. Clement before them. They faulted those who performed abortion — or provided the drugs — as well as those who procured abortion.

This was never a local issue. Nor was it a passing fad. It was always, and it was everywhere.

St. Augustine wrote about the practice in several places. He knew nothing of embryology, and much of his scientific speculation (like much of Aristotle’s) proved to be wrong. But in his moral analysis he was unwavering. He made clear in several works that the act of intentional abortion was always gravely sinful. Today, his arguments are all the stronger, when supported by modern science.

After paganism

With the Edict of Milan in 313, the Emperor Constantine legalized the observance of Christian religion. Gradually, in the century that followed, Christian doctrine influenced Roman law. It was no longer legal, for example, to rape or kill a slave. And abortion and infanticide were now abolished.

The practice never disappeared, of course. Because pregnancy outside wedlock was considered an occasion of shame, desperate women still sought abortion, and unscrupulous practitioners still plied the trade. The issue continued to arise in sermons, disciplinary manuals, and penitential books.

But it was no longer necessary to argue the matter. In a Christian world, the practice was known to be grievously sinful, like the rape or murder of a slave. The fact that such practices were legally condoned by pagan Rome was no argument in their favor.

The Christian principles that protected the unborn would eventually lead to other notions that today we take for granted: universal human dignity, human equality, human rights, women’s rights, children’s rights. 

These are all historical novelties, made possible by Christianity. What makes them work is their universality, their catholicity, which the Christian Way demands. But if one class of people can deprive another of the right to life, then all the other principles, and all the rights and protections they brought about, will fall in time.

The opposition to abortion is — like all those other good things — a historical anomaly. The medical historian Riddle speaks of Christianity as breaking a “chain of knowledge” that had made it possible and acceptable to kill children with impunity.

He is right, of course. The prohibition of abortion was distinctive to early Christianity and key to Christian identity. For the first Christians — the Fathers, the martyrs, the apologists — this doctrine on abortion was essential, not peripheral. Thus, it was subject to the Church’s discipline.

What seems news to the media today — and even to some Catholic politicians — is actually an argument settled against brutal paganism a long, long time ago.

The Strange Conversion of Wallace StevensRobert RoyalMONDAY, JULY 12, 2021As things slow for summer, I’ve been back at writing the sequel to my book A Deeper Vision. That work dealt with the modern Catholic intellectual tradition, mostly outside of America. I’ve already written several hundred pages of the second volume, which will survey American philosophers, theologians, historians, writers, and artists with a Catholic connection. Besides the obvious names, there are famous figures little-known for their Catholicism (often because they were late converts or had lover’s quarrels with the Church): Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Gary Cooper,  John Wayne, Toni Morrison, Gwendolyn Brooks, etc. I’ve been trying to understand how what I would call a failure of creativity and imagination has hindered the American reception of otherwise strong theological and philosophical arguments, and thereby contributed to our apostasies.Relevant to all that is the strange conversion story of Wallace Stevens. Stevens was born in Pennsylvania, attended Harvard, became a lawyer, and then an insurance executive in Hartford, Connecticut. He’s probably the greatest American poet of the twentieth century, maybe ever (Pulitzer 1955, when it still meant something.)I’m from Connecticut, but you don’t have to be in order to appreciate the sheer brilliance of “The River of Rivers in Connecticut”:There is a great river this side of Stygia
Before one comes to the first black cataracts
And trees that lack the intelligence of trees.In that river, far this side of Stygia,
The mere flowing of the water is a gayety,
Flashing and flashing in the sun. On its banks,No shadow walks. The river is fateful,
Like the last one. But there is no ferryman.
He could not bend against its propelling force.It is not to be seen beneath the appearances
That tell of it. The steeple at Farmington
Stands glistening and Haddam shines and sways.It is the third commonness with light and air,
A curriculum, a vigor, a local abstraction. . .
Call it, one more, a river, an unnamed flowing,Space-filled, reflecting the seasons, the folk-lore
Of each of the senses; call it, again and again,
The river that flows nowhere, like a sea.It’s uncanny how Stevens can take a natural feature – here the Connecticut River – and link it to fresh metaphysical insights.Stevens remarks elsewhere that poetry makes “The visible a little hard / To see.” In other words, because we take familiar objects for granted, poetry – especially great poetry – not only refreshes the appearances of ordinary things; it can awaken us to mysteries and depths in what only seems ordinary.*Early in his poetic development, that gift – paradoxically – led Stevens away from religion, especially Christianity. The last stanza of his great poem “Sunday Morning” was, for many at the time, an alternative creed, suggesting that poetry could replace religion:She hears, upon that water without sound,
A voice that cries, “The tomb in Palestine
Is not the porch of spirits lingering.
It is the grave of Jesus, where he lay.”
We live in an old chaos of the sun,
Or old dependency of day and night,
Or island solitude, unsponsored, free,
Of that wide water, inescapable.
Deer walk upon our mountains, and the quail
Whistle about us their spontaneous cries;
Sweet berries ripen in the wilderness;
And, in the isolation of the sky,
At evening, casual flocks of pigeons make
Ambiguous undulations as they sink,
Downward to darkness, on extended wings.“Casual flocks of pigeons”? No Holy Spirit descending as a dove there. Many viewed Stevens as a standard secularist, though the poetic fireworks didn’t lend themselves to an easy materialism.Stevens was an odd man. He was offered a professorship at Harvard in 1955, but turned it down so that he could remain an insurance executive. He liked privacy, most of the time; but he also liked to drink, dance, and travel. Which could lead to trouble.Once at a party in Key West (Read another great poem “The Idea of Order at Key West” here), he was badmouthing Hemingway (himself still mostly Catholic at that point). They took it outside. Hemingway (an amateur boxer) landed a couple of blows on Stevens’ face. Stevens – a much bigger man – landed a punch square on Hemingway’s jaw. It had no effect – on Hemingway – but broke Stevens’ hand. He had to stay out of the office until the face healed to avoid gossip.This life of an insurance company vice-president, a Yankee conservative politically, privately engaged with his art, continued for decades. No obvious steps toward Catholicism appeared, though Stevens occasionally expressed admiration for Pius X and frequently went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral to meditate when he was in New York. But subtle is the Lord.When Stevens was being treated for stomach cancer at the St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, he wanted to discuss Catholicism with Fr. Arthur Hanley, the chaplain. The priest remarked later that Stevens already knew quite a bit about the faith, but had questions about Hell and God’s allowing so much evil in the world. Stevens asked for baptism, which Fr. Hanley performed with a nun as witness.The literary world and Stevens’ own daughter were shocked. They couldn’t believe – and many still deny – that he converted. Nonetheless, the record seems indisputable.And the poems sometimes move out into a realm where you can see how conversion was not only possible, but probable. For instance, Stevens’ last poem, “Of Mere Being”:The palm at the end of the mind,
Beyond the last thought, rises
In the bronze distance,A gold-feathered bird
Sings in the palm, without human meaning,
Without human feeling, a foreign song.You know then that it is not the reason
That makes us happy or unhappy.
The bird sings. Its feathers shine.The palm stands on the edge of space.
The wind moves slowly in the branches.

3 hours agoYou’re either immune or not. Everybody is different, what works for others doesn’t mean it will work for you. Being allergic to something doesn’t mean everyone is allergic to that something. A medicine for one doesn’t make it a medicine for everyone. This isn’t new, it’s a vaccine at the end of the day with side effects or not. Nobody is forcing you to take it. Normal shots of anything can kill even when approved. You don’t fully know your body till a reaction occurs.REPLY

End the Bergoglio Borgata

The moral crisis and “doctrinal anarchy” as Vatican expert Edward Pentin and others have written about in the Church caused by Francis has reached the breaking point where all faithful Catholics must pray for and demand that Cardinal Raymond Burke and the faithful bishops issue the correction and investigate if Francis is an invalidly elected anti-pope.

That is the purpose of this post.
A Vatican expert who has met Francis and wishes to remain anonymous gave the Catholic Monitor an impassioned statement to this purpose saying:
“Raymond Burke is the epitome of humility, holiness and brilliance.”
“I love Cardinal Burke, but I’ve run out of patience.”

This impassioned statement is titled End the Bergoglio Borgata:
The persistent silence of the College of Cardinals and the Bishops signifies their cowardice and neutrality. They invoke omerta in the face of the Bergoglio Borgata which has knee-capped the Catholic Church, decimating it with modernism and secular populism.  The Cardinals seemingly choke with fear as Francis supplants the Magisterium with his own doctrinal brand of liberation theology. They watch silently as he guts the FFI, the Knights of Malta, the Pontifical Academies, and stacks the  College of Cardinals with his liberal lackeys to ensure that Francis minions dominate the Chair of Peter for generations.
How often have we heard cardinals, bishops and priests whisper, ‘we will wait Francis out, he is old, and has only one lung.’ 
How’s that strategy working? 
How much more destruction are you willing to endure, silently watching, remaining neutral in this time of moral crisis in the Catholic Church?

Remember the words of St. Cajetan, “you must resist the Pope who openly destroys the Church.” 
While the clerics sit on the sidelines, the laity is not content to watch Rome burn during this papacy, knowing that the true scandal is not the vociferous criticism of Francis; the real scandal is the papacy of Jorge Bergoglio and the complicit silence of the hierarchy.
And, questions persist about the hierarchy.
Is there a real man left in the Vatican to speak up and save Holy Mother Church from this disastrous papacy ? 
Is it too much to ask you to lay down your riches, titles, and honor, at the end of your earthly lives, for Holy Mother Church? 
Are you content to be made a laughingstock with your Dubia Demand which goes ignored and unanswered for nearly 9 months? 
Are there any men in the College of Cardinals left who are willing to fight for Holy Mother Church, like the legions of men in the traditional Catholic blogoshere?
Knowing that the St. Gallen Mafia plotted and schemed the spurious election of Bergoglio, why would you, Cardinals passively condone his scandalous appointments, his heretical pronouncements, and his tyrannical firings, without speaking out in united protest? 
It’s time to break the code of silence.  ‘Show up Time’ has long past. Time to put on your big boy pants and blow the lid off this modernist and heretical papacy. The Resistance is upon us.

The Dubia Demand offered hope and clarity, but unanswered remains a hollow threat. 
Creativity, bravery, and prayer are required to launch an offensive to SAVE OUR CHURCH.
Bergoglio is increasingly vulnerable, exposed, and obviously flawed. The time is long over to stop protecting this papal wrecking ball who scandalizes the faithful every time he opens his mouth. 
Who could forget the merciful Francis who haughtily chastised Cardinal Mueller, “I am the Pope, I don’t have to give you reasons for firing your 3 best priests at the CDF.”  Hardly the  conciliatory and humble words of a man who espouses dialogue and consultation.  As Aesop cautioned, “any excuse will serve a tyrant.” 
Time to shed the comfort of your mitre, your title, and your coat of arms. 
Have you forgotten that Dante warned that “the darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis?” 
In the words of St Catherine of Siena, “Proclaim the truth and don’t be silent through fear.”

Stop for a moment of silence, ask Jesus Christ what He want you to do now and next. In this silence remember God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Three Divine Persons yet One God, has an ordered universe where you can know truth and falsehood as well as never forget that He wants you to have eternal happiness with Him as his son or daughter by grace. Make this a practice. By doing this you are doing more good than reading anything here or anywhere else on the Internet.

Bigleaguepolitics.com reports: Big League Politics has reported on how the UFC, led by Dana White, bucked the fake news media and public health hysterics and refused to kowtow during the COVID-19 scamdemic, with its fighters being given freedom of speech and allowed to support Trump publicly:

“UFC President Dana White received a tremendous amount of flak for refusing to cancel shows throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and now he’s rubbing it in the faces of the critics.

White posted a video last week along with a caption to inspire fans whose lives may have been severely impacted by the pandemic and lockdown restrictions pushed with help of media-generated hysteria.

“As we roll into 2021, I just wanted to remind everyone there’s ALWAYS a solution to every problem! So, cut through all the bullshit, and don’t let these people that don’t matter tell you how to live your life,” White wrote in a tweet.

“The media are not in the news business. They’re in the clickbait business. They think negativity sells and gets click, so that’s what they deliver. Negativity is their product, but I’m not going to let that stop us,” he continued.

“Any time there is great success, it is surrounded by negativity but here is the reality: None of the media people know anything about this business. A lot of people did not want this to happen, but what we are good at is proving people wrong,” White added.”

The UFC has emerged as a last bastion for resistance and masculinity in a civilization gone horribly wrong. Gibson and Trump are the last of a dying breed. Trump will need a new vice president for a potential 2024 presidential run. If Gibson is not working on any major movie projects, he should consider stepping up.

Victimizers quickly becoming victims is a recurrent theme of Thucydides’ history. In his commentary on the so-called stasis at Corcyra, he offers his most explicit warning about the long-term dangers of destroying legal institutions, customs, and traditions that serve the common good for short-term gain.
The historian notes that in the inevitable yin and yang of politics, the destroyers inevitably will seek, but do so in vain, refuge in what they have destroyed. Between 2017 and 2021 the Left has done exactly that. 
What was common to the media’s deification of the criminally minded Michael Avenatti, and the promotion of a series of abject hoaxes? Do we remember the Steele “dossier,” the supposed authority of Fusion-GPS, the Schiff “report,” and the entire Russian “collusion” yarn? 
Do we recall how the Left invented the Charlottesville construct out of a supposedly racist and unqualified endorsement by the president of the Klan and neo-Nazis? Who has forgotten the charge of “racism” for merely connecting the origins of COVID-19 to a Wuhan, level-4 security, gain-of-function-research, Chinese-military-affiliated virology lab rather than to a chopped-up wet bat or pangolin? 
Do we remember the names of our supposed best and brightest retired intelligence officials who lied shamelessly and on spec for the Biden campaign, claiming that Russian “disinformation” accounted for a supposedly fictitious Hunter Biden’s laptop? And are the fabrications by Joe Biden and the media—that men with guns staged an “armed insurrection” of January 6 and “killed” officer Brian Sicknick—the new standard of truth? 
What ties together the efforts of Robert Mueller’s 22-month, $40 million witch hunt, and the two impeachment proceedings—the last dispensing with witnesses, formal hearings, cross-examinations, a special prosecutor, and the Chief Justice presiding, all in mob-like efforts to try to convict in the Senate now private citizen Donald Trump? Must a Joe Biden, one day as president-emeritus and private citizen, fear that there will be no statutes of limitation to his vulnerability, when the vast trove of Hunter Biden’s laptop is finally accessed and turned over to a future hostile congress or federal prosecutor?
What is the common denominator of the Lt. General Michael Flynn debacle, the unmasking and leaking of surveilled American citizens, the nonstop politicized commentaries of retired military officers, and the weaponization of the intelligence agencies? What binds together the text trove of Lisa Page and Peter Strzok, the cleansing of FBI cell phones, or the forgeries of FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith?
What was the catalyst that turned a left-wing Democratic Party into a cultural revolutionary mob? In other words, why in our 233rd year of the republic are Democrats so intent to destroy the Electoral College, pack the court, admit new states to the Union, junk the filibuster, and federalize national election laws? What was so wrong with assimilation, integration, intermarriage, the “content of our character,” and race as incidental rather than essential to who we are?What has the woke revolution offered us instead?
Since when did regaining a House majority equate to impeaching a president on the eve of a reelection campaign, with his future and fiercest campaign opponents possibly as senators to be sitting in judgment on him in any Senate trial? What was common to all the “bombshells” and “walls are closing in” mythologies regarding meetings with Russians in Trump Tower, or mysterious “pings” of Trump tower machines automatically communicating with Russians, or the certain impending indictments of the Trump family?
Since when do we go back over three decades to destroy a Supreme Court nominee, with rumors of teenage drinking and supposed sexual harassment, charges brought without independent witnesses and evidence, but with plenty of solid refutation? 
When did the 25th Amendment become a political tool to remove a president before a scheduled election? Since when does a Yale professor become a congressional deity for unprofessionally tele-diagnosing the president as mentally enfeebled—to the acclaim of Congress? Since when do the acting FBI head and the acting Attorney General spin mad ideas of entrapping the president with a wire to oust him as crazy? 
Since when do former officials and public intellectuals write openly about the possibilities of a coup d’etat? Or, when was it honorable for an “anonymous” and supposedly “important” administration insider to brag publicly about deliberately obstructing and undermining a president, or for retired admirals to address the nation in op-eds raising the possibility of removing a president “the sooner, the better”? What exactly does “sooner” mean?
The ties that bound all these melodramas over the last four years were threefold: 1) venomous hatred of outlier, controversial, and combative Trump; 2) the sanctimonious, near-religious belief that any means necessary were justified in the noble aim of destroying his presidency—and damn any lasting damage to traditional customs and constitutional norms; and 3) no counterforce would ever dream of doing to the Left what it was doing to destroy Trump.
Now we have a new president, a new administration, and a media that has gone from hysterical and venomous hatred of a president to sudden puppy-dog obsequiousness. In a blink, the national press corps molted its National Enquirer exoskeleton and revealed its inner flabby Pravda essence.
What are the lasting consequences of all this madness? 
The Left should hope that House Republicans are Marquess of Queensberry players, and do not emulate the Democrats’ behavior. 
They should hope that a Republican chairman of the House intelligence committee would not monitor the phone records of Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.). For if the opposition did gain the majority in November 2022, Joe Biden’s past involvement with foreign monied interests and the evidence of his shady behavior from his own son’s laptop texts offer a far more convincing case of impeachable offenses—failure to report to the IRS off-the-books income, influence peddling, and abject lying about foreign quid pro quo involvement—than does a single Ukrainian phone call. All that exposure is well aside from Biden’s deliberate decision not to enforce, as his job requires, federal immigration law. 
Is screaming that the Trump boys were crooked, about to be indicted, and should be investigated nonstop a good precedent for federal fishing investigations of Hunter Biden? The mystery of Hunter Biden’s audacity and shamelessness seems now simple: as his recent “artist” scam, and the excuses of the White House for his artifices, show, Hunter will never, ever stop his gift. 
Why? Aside from the easy lucre, a cynic might conclude that Hunter expresses bitterness at his own “clean” father for not appreciating dirty Hunter’s own slimy and raunchy “sacrifices” to enrich the Biden family in general, and in particular the “big guy” and Mr. “10 percent.” In truth, Hunter’s spite increasingly borders on implicit blackmail of his presidential father, as if something like, “You owe me, so cut me some slack—or perhaps if I go down, so does the family.”
In sum, Hunter is kryptonite to the White House, and not just because of his drugs, his pornography, his women, and his criminality, but because in his delusions at least he thinks that all he did was the cost of business for the Biden family, and the proof of his pudding is in his family’s voracious eating.
If the media can force a compos mentis president to take the Montreal Cognitive Assessment to stop the hysteria that he is both enfeebled and should be removed, what do we then do with a Joe Biden who is the first president since Woodrow Wilson who often seems not mentally or cognitively up to the job? Keep talking about Joe’s favorite ice cream or the décor of Air Force One?
Are we now to expect dissident retired generals and conservative admirals soon to swarm the airways and op-eds columns claiming that Biden is derelict, non-compos mentis, and, in McCarthyite style, scanning the ranks for mythical insurrectionaries and, thus, using the tactics of the Nazis and Mussolini to divide us? Is that our new standard? If a Biden campaign helper or advisor is brought up on charges, will Fox, in CNN style, accidentally show up at the home of the accused to film a SWAT team arrest?
In truth, constitutional protections, sane media coverage, and acceptable behavior for the top echelon of the political-military-intelligence-industrial complex were abandoned during 2016. The old rules were jettisoned on the assumption that the nation’s moral superiors and Platonic guardians had the right, and indeed, the duty, to suspend norms and traditions for our own greater good of sandbagging a political campaign, undermining a presidential transition, and removing the elected Donald Trump any way possible. Again, none of our moral overseers ever produce any historical metrics to justify their precedents of sabotaging a presidency. Were there Trump sins and crimes in office comparable to: ☆  FDR having his daughter arrange trysts with his mistress in the White House, or ☆  putting Japanese-Americans in detention camps, or ☆  emulating JFK’s sexual depravities in the White House pool, or ☆  wiretapping Civil Rights leaders for purposes of blackmail, or ☆  exposing oneself in LBJ-style, or ☆  the Clinton cigar antics, or ☆  siccing the IRS, Obama style, on political enemies, or ☆  the latter’s intelligence agencies green-lighting a foreign agent to use foreign sources to run a smear campaign against a presidential candidate?
So the problem now is that under such our new precedents, Joe Biden has more exposure to investigations of his own family’s criminality and behavior than Trump ever had. 
If Trump was rash, Biden really is cognitively compromised, and would not fare as well against the same “prove you are sane” choruses. His executive orders are far more constitutionally questionable than Trump’s. And under the new rules of impeachment, he is far more culpable for using his office in the past for personal gain. 
The Left fished for liberal federal justices to derail the Trump executive-order agenda, and now the Right will simply copy that protocol and shop around for conservative judges to do the same to Biden’s edicts.
The Left is well on its way to incurring a pushback in 2022 comparable to 2010, with the potential to make the Tea Party boomerang seem like small stuff. And the difference this time around is that there are no customs, no traditions left in treatment accorded a political opponent in office. No one any longer knows what is fair play and what is out of bounds, but only what the Democrats have left us as the new normal: if you deem a candidate, a president-elect, and a president a radical threat to your agenda, then any means necessary to destroy or to remove him and his enablers are not merely legal but absolutely moral and necessary—and damned be the damage to the nation. 
What has been sown into the Trump wind, will likely be reaped in the Biden whirlwind.
