Cardinal Mueller on the New TLM Restrictions

Cardinal Gerhard Mueller

MONDAY, JULY 19, 2021

The pope’s intention with his motu proprio, Traditionis Custodes, is to secure or restore the unity of the Church. The proposed means for this is the total unification of the Roman Rite in the form of the Missal of Paul VI (including its subsequent variations). Therefore, the celebration of Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, as introduced by Pope Benedict XVI with Summorum pontificum (2007) on the basis of the Missal that existed from Pius V (1570) to John XXIII (1962), has been drastically restricted. The clear intent is to condemn the Extraordinary Form to extinction in the long run.

In his “Letter to the Bishops of the Whole World,” which accompanies the motu proprio, Pope Francis tries to explain the motives that have caused him, as the bearer of the supreme authority of the Church, to limit the liturgy in the extraordinary form. Beyond the presentation of his subjective reactions, however, a stringent and logically comprehensible theological argumentation would also have been appropriate. For papal authority does not consist in superficially demanding from the faithful mere obedience, i.e., a formal submission of the will, but, much more essentially, in enabling the faithful also to be convinced with consent of the mind. As St. Paul, courteous towards his often quite unruly Corinthians, said, “in the church I would rather speak five words with my mind, so as to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in tongues.” (1 Cor 14:19)

This dichotomy between good intention and poor execution always arises where the objections of competent employees are perceived as an obstruction of their superiors’ intentions, and which are, therefore, not even offered. As welcome as the references to Vatican II may be, care must be taken to ensure that the Council’s statements are used precisely and in context. The quotation from St. Augustine about membership in the Church “according to the body” and “according to the heart” (Lumen Gentium 14) refers to the full Church membership of the Catholic faith. It consists in the visible incorporation into the body of Christ (creedal, sacramental, ecclesiastical-hierarchical communion) as well as in the union of the heart, i.e. in the Holy Spirit. What this means, however, is not obedience to the pope and the bishops in the discipline of the sacraments, but sanctifying grace, which fully involves us in the invisible Church as communion with the Triune God.

For the unity in the confession of the revealed faith and the celebration of the mysteries of grace in the seven sacraments by no means require sterile uniformity in the external liturgical form, as if the Church were like one of the international hotel chains with their homogenous design. The unity of believers with one another is rooted in unity in God through faith, hope, and love and has nothing to do with uniformity in appearance, the lockstep of a military formation, or the groupthink of the big-tech age.

Even after the Council of Trent, there always was a certain diversity (musical, celebratory, regional) in the liturgical organization of Masses. The intention of Pope Pius V was not to suppress the variety of rites, but rather to curb the abuses that had led to a devastating lack of understanding among the Protestant Reformers regarding the substance of the sacrifice of the Mass (its Sacrificial character and Real Presence). In the Missal of Paul VI, ritualistic (rubricist)  homogenization is broken up, precisely in order to overcome a mechanical execution in favor of an inner and outer active participation of all believers in their respective languages and cultures. The unity of the Latin rite, however, should be preserved through the same basic liturgical structure and the precise orientation of the translations to the Latin original.

The Roman Church must not pass on its responsibility for unity in cult to the Bishops’ Conferences. Rome must oversee translation of the normative texts of the Missal of Paul VI, and even of the biblical texts, that might obscure the contents of the faith. Presumptions that one may “improve” the verba domini (e.g. pro multis – “for many” – at the consecration, the et ne nos inducas in tentationem – “and lead us not into temptation” – in the Our Father), contradict the truth of the faith and the unity of the Church much more than celebrating Mass according to the Missal of John XXIII.

The key to a Catholic understanding of the liturgy lies in the insight that the substance of the sacraments is given to the Church as a visible sign and means of the invisible grace by virtue of divine law, but that it is up to the Apostolic See and, in accordance with the law, to the bishops to order the external form of the liturgy (insofar as it has not already existed since apostolic times). (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 22 § 1)

The provisions of Traditionis Custodes are of a disciplinary, not dogmatic nature and can be modified again by any future pope. Naturally, the pope, in his concern for the unity of the Church in the revealed faith, is to be fully supported when the celebration of Holy Mass according to the Missal of 1962 is an expression of resistance to the authority of Vatican II, which is to say, when the doctrine of the faith and the Church’s ethics are relativized or even denied in the liturgical and pastoral order.

*

In Traditionis Custodes, the pope rightly insists on the unconditional recognition of Vatican II. Nobody can call himself a Catholic who either wants to go back behind Vatican II (or any other council recognized by the pope) as the time of the “true” Church or wants to leave that Church behind as an intermediate step towards a “new Church.” One may measure Pope Francis’ will to return to unity the deplored so-called “traditionalists” (i.e., those opposed to the Missal of Paul VI) against the degree of his determination to put an end to the innumerable “progressivist” abuses of the liturgy (renewed in accordance with Vatican II) that are tantamount to blasphemy. The paganization of the Catholic liturgy – which is in its essence nothing other than the worship of the One and Triune God – through the mythologization of nature, the idolatry of environment and climate, as well as the Pachamama spectacle, were rather counterproductive for the restoration and renewal of a dignified and orthodox liturgy reflective of the fulness of the Catholic faith.

Nobody can turn a blind eye to the fact that even those priests and laypeople who celebrate Mass according to the order of the Missal of St. Paul VI are now being widely decried as traditionalist. The teachings of Vatican II on the uniqueness of redemption in Christ, the full realization of the Church of Christ in the Catholic Church, the inner essence of the Catholic liturgy as adoration of God and mediation of grace, Revelation and its presence in Scripture and Apostolic Tradition, the infallibility of the magisterium, the primacy of the pope, the sacramentality of the Church, the dignity of the priesthood, the holiness and indissolubility of marriage – all these are being heretically denied in open contradiction to Vatican II by a majority of German bishops and lay functionaries (even if disguised under pastoral phrases).

And despite all the apparent enthusiasm they express for Pope Francis, they are flatly denying the authority conferred on him by Christ as the successor of Peter. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s document about the impossibility of legitimizing same-sex and extramarital sexual contacts through a blessing is ridiculed by German (and not only German) bishops, priests, and theologians as merely the opinion of under-qualified curial officials. Here we have a threat to the unity of the Church in revealed faith, reminiscent of the size of the Protestant secession from Rome in the sixteenth century. Given the disproportion between the relatively modest response to the massive attacks on the unity of the church in the German “Synodal Way” (as well as in other pseudo-reforms) and the harsh disciplining of the old ritual minority, the image of the misguided fire brigade comes to mind, which – instead of saving the blazing house – instead first saves the small barn next to it.

Without the slightest empathy, one ignores the religious feelings of the (often young) participants in the Masses according to the Missal John XXIII. (1962) Instead of appreciating the smell of the sheep, the shepherd here hits them hard with his crook. It also seems simply unjust to abolish celebrations of the “old” rite just because it attracts some problematic people: abusus non tollit usum.

What deserves special attention in Traditionis Custodes is the use of the axiom lex orandi-lex credendi (“Rule of prayer – rule of faith”). This phrase appears first in the anti-Pelagian Indiculus (“Against superstitions and paganism”) which spoke about “the sacraments of priestly prayers, handed down by the apostles to be celebrated uniformly all over the world and in the entire Catholic Church, so that the rule of prayer is the rule of faith.” (Denzinger Hünermann, Enchiridion symbolorum 3) This refers to the substance of the sacraments (in signs and words) but not the liturgical rite, of which there were several (with different variants) in the patristic era. One cannot simply declare the latest missal to be the only valid norm of the Catholic faith without distinguishing between the “part that is unchangeable by virtue of divine institution and the parts that are subject to change.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 21). The changing liturgical rites do not represent a different faith, but rather testify to the one and the same Apostolic Faith of the Church in its different expressions.

The pope’s letter confirms that he allows the celebration according to the older form under certain conditions. He rightly points to the centrality of the Roman canon in the more recent Missal as the heart of the Roman rite. This guarantees the crucial continuity of the Roman liturgy in its essence,  organic development, and inner unity. To be sure, one expects the lovers of the ancient liturgy to recognize the renewed liturgy; just as the followers of the Paul VI Missal also have to confess that the Mass according to the Missal of John XXIII is a true and valid Catholic liturgy, that is, it contains the substance of the Eucharist instituted by Christ and, therefore, there is and can only be “the one Mass of all times.”

A little more knowledge of Catholic dogmatics and the history of the liturgy could counteract the unfortunate formation of opposing parties and also save the bishops from the temptation to act in an authoritarian, loveless, and narrow-minded manner against the supporters of the “old” Mass. The bishops are appointed as shepherds by the Holy Spirit: “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.” (Acts 20, 28) They are not merely representatives of a central office – with opportunities for advancement. The good shepherd can be recognized by the fact that he worries more about the salvation of souls than recommending himself to a higher authority by subservient “good behavior.” (1 Peter 5, 1-4) If the law of non-contradiction still applies, one cannot logically castigate careerism in the Church and at the same time promote careerists.

Let us hope that the Congregations for Religious and for Divine Worship, with their new authority, do not become inebriated by power and think they have to wage a campaign of destruction against the communities of the old rite – in the foolish belief that by doing so they are rendering a service to the Church and promoting Vatican II.

If Traditionis Custodes is to serve the unity of the church, that can only mean a unity in faith, which enables us to “come to the perfect knowledge of the Son of God,” which is to say unity in truth and love. (cf. Eph 4, 12-15).

THE CATHOLIC MONITOR

Is Pope Benedict “a Prisoner in the Vatican” & did he Resign under Duress?

The popular Catholic blogger Laramie Hirsch quoted the approved apparition Our Lady of Good Success and then asked “Is Our Lady of Good Success talking about Pope Benedict being a prisoner in the Vatican?”:

“‘The devil will work to persecute the ministers of the Lord in every way, working with baneful cunning to destroy the spirit of their vocation and corrupting many. Those who will thus scandalize the Christian flock will bring upon all priests the hatred of bad Christians and the enemies of the One, Holy, Roman Catholic, and Apostolic Church. This apparent triumph of Satan will cause enormous suffering to the good pastors of the Church…and to the Supreme Pastor and Vicar of Christ on earth who, a prisoner in the Vatican, will shed secret and bitter tears in the presence of God Our Lord, asking for light, sanctity, and perfection for all the clergy of the world, to whom he is King and Father.’

Our Lady of Good Success…”

“… Is Our Lady of Good Success talking about Pope Benedict being a prisoner in the Vatican? At first blush, Pope Benedict appears to have stated multiple times that he’s happy with his resignation. But the following account claims otherwise. It is printed here, on my blog, with permission from the editor of the blog, From Rome. Read with discernment, and join me in praying to God for answers and help.”

“The Imprisonment of Pope Benedict XVI… “

“… 2012

In March 2012 Pope Benedict XVI established a Commission of Cardinals to investigate leaks of reserved and confidential documents on television, in newspapers, and in other communications media (in what is known as the Vatileaks scandal). It first met on Tuesday, 24 April 2012. Cardinal Herranz served as the Chair, and was accompanied by Cardinals Jozef Tomko and Salvatore De Giorgi. (Wikipedia: Vatican Leaks Scandal)”

“Fall

Someone leaks the results of the Vatican Commission on Gays in the Vatican to Team Bergoglio, which in response begins feverish activity at Rome (Documented by Dr. Sire in the Book, The Dictator Pope). This activity aims for the forced abdication of Benedict.

Early November: The Coup d’etat is hatched. Team Bergoglio demands the resignation of Pope Benedict to prevent the revelations of the Dossier to be presented by Vatican Commission on Gays in the Vatican. The contents of the dossier will implicate all the key members of Team Bergoglio and thus all force and expediency must be employed to stop its publication.’

“The conspiracy includes not only Team Bergoglio, but all named in the Dossier, the names of whom are given to Team Bergoglio by someone working in the Commission.
The terms of the Coup d’etat are as follows:

  • Pope Benedict will resign
  • Pope Benedict will not publish the contents of the Dossier
  • Pope Benedict will continuously testify that he resigned willingly”

“If Pope Benedict refuses, Team Bergoglio threatens the Pope with assassination, citing the published testimony of an Italian Journalist on Feb. 11, 2012 saying that the assassination will be within 1 year. The date Feb 11, 2013 is chosen for the resignation to signal to the Lavender Mafia round the world, that the abdication has been forced precisely to defend their evil institution.”[http://forge-and-anvil.com/2019/10/13/they-wont-release-the-3rd-secret-of-fatima-]

So, is it possible that the Vatican Gay Lobby forced Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation by assassination threats and other threats and therefore his resignation is invalid?

In January, LifeSiteNews reported:

“Cardinal Walter Kasper – a close collaborator of Pope Francis – has expressed concern over a possible attempt at removing the current Pope from office but makes it clear that ‘a forced resignation would be invalid.’”
[https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.lifesitenews.com/mobile/news/cardinal-kasper-a-forced-resignation-of-pope-francis-would-be-invalid#ampshare=https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/cardinal-kasper-a-forced-resignation-of-pope-francis-would-be-invalid]

In September, Reuters made the same statement saying that if pressure is put on “Pope Francis to resign [it] could make it difficult, if not impossible, for him to do so, Church experts say.”:

“’The pope has the right to freely resign. That’s what the canon says. The doubt is whether the situation Francis is in now really allows for a free choice because there is a political faction in the Church trying to force it,’ said Nicholas Cafardi, former dean of Duquesne University School of Law.”

“’I don’t see how (the pope can resign freely) when you have people campaigning for it,’ said Cafardi, who is also a former member of the Board of Governors of the Canon Law Society of America.”
[https://www.google.com/amp/s/mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN1LN1IL#ampshare=https://www.reuters.com/article/us-pope-abuse-law/can-the-popes-accusers-force-him-to-resign-idUSKCN1LN1IL]

If Kasper, Reuters and canon law expert Cafardi are right that it is “difficult, if not impossible” for a pope to resign “if a political faction in the Church if trying to force it” then Pope Benedict XVI probably, if not for sure, is still Pope which would mean Francis is not a valid or real pope.

Was there “a political faction in the Church trying to force” Benedict to resign which put into “doubt… whether the situation [Benedict was] in… really allow[ed] for a free choice” as Cafardi said to Reuters?

Was Benedict’s stepping down “a forced resignation [which] would [make it] invalid” according to Kasper?

Was there “a political faction in the Church trying to force” Benedict to resign?

Respected pro-gay Italian journalist Emiliano Fittipaldi, one of two journalists charged in the Vatileaks trial in the Vatican court for obtaining confidential Church papers, inferred that “a political faction in the Church [was] trying to force” Benedict to resign:

“Ratzinger [Pope Benedict XVI]… was very traditionalist and conservative… but he did important things. The things he did in relation to pedophilia, which was not much, but double the time for prescribing crimes in the Vatican, sent away almost 600 priests in a few years. The incredible thing is that Francis did a lot less.”

“… The story of the gay lobby has… importance in the Vatileaks and the dismissal of Pope Ratzinger… He destroyed the careers of those who were with them. To stop this group, a group of supporters of Ratzinger began to issue a series of documents, which was called Vatileaks He destroyed the careers of those who were with them. To stop this group, a group of supporters of Ratzinger began to issue a series of documents, which was called VatileaksI can say this shock, this war of [Vatileaks] documents led to the end of Ratzinger.”

“… Ratzinger made… war against pedophilia… [h]e just started and resigned.”

On September 26, 2018, the liberal Maria Antonietta Calabrò, who is considered a well-informed and highly respected Italian journalist, reported another link to Vatileaks related to Benedict’s resignation which was an “2012 obscure threats after a trip to China of another prelate [pro-gay Cardinal Paolo Romeo].  And that document ended up in the first Vatileaks.“:

[T]he predecessor of Francis, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, also a extensor of an open letter to Chinese Catholics, received at the beginning of 2012 obscure threats after a trip to China of another prelate. And that document ended up in the first Vatileaks scandal.”
[Italy’s HuffPost (link)ESTERI  26/09/2018 16:25 CEST  |  Aggiornato26/09/2018 16:26 CEST  Papa Francesco, il caso Viganò e il “segno di Dio” che ha accelerato l’accordo con la Cina]

According to a commenter on the Catholic Monitor this “obscure threats after a trip to China of another prelate’ caused “Benedict XVI [to] renounce [resign]”:

“Cardinal Dario Castrillón Restrepo, who was an extremely important Cardinal especially during JP II’s & Benedict XVI’s pontificates, and was a key negotiator during several world crisis like the cold war, was interviewed by Colombian Television Channel “Caracol”. The video was uploaded on youtube May 10, 2018 and Cardinal Dario passed away May 18, if I remember correctly. So, this interview was very timely, only a few weeks before his death. In that interview, Cardinal Dario admits that he was the one who had received a very painful letter “written in chinese” which urged him to hand-deliver the letter to the Holy Father (Benedict XVI). Cardinal Dario said the letter contained the most horrific threats beyong imagination. So much, that it was too much for the Holy Father to bear and for that reason, said the Cardinal, His Holiness Benedict XVI renounced. Cardinal Dario says Benedict XVI renounced only months after he read the letter. He mentioned that after he read the letter, both Cardinal Dario and His Holiness Benedict XVI vowed to keep it a secret between the two, but Cardinal Dario said that ‘someone knew and told everyone.'”

“So, the question about China being involved? Hmm..very likely?? FYI, the link to the video interview on youtube says the video is no longer available in our country (U.S.)”

What did the media report about this “2012 obscure threats after a trip to China of another prelate” and about that prelate: pro-gay Cardinal Romeo?

The radical gay New Ways Ministry, who are notorious dissenters according to a 2011 US Bishops statement, revealed in 2012 that Cardinal Paolo Romeo apparently was part of the Vatican gay lobby:

” GayStarNews reports:

“Three Italian Catholic cardinals have agreed to prayer vigils held by the religious group Gionata for the victims of gay hate and discrimination for the first time.“LGBT groups will pray for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Milan, Florence and Palermo, in Sicily as part of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) to be celebrated . . . in an estimated 100 countries around the world. . . .

“Cardinal Paolo Romeo, in Palermo, . . . [has] backed it, even though he banned the vigil last year. The liturgy there will be celebrated at 9pm . . . in the San Gabriele Arcangelo church.” [https://www.newwaysministry.org/2012/05/17/three-italian-cardinals-support-prayer-vigils-for-international-day-against-homophobia-and-transphobia/

The pro-gay Romeo, who came out of the closet about supporting “LGBT… liturgy,” in China according to news reports spoke of an assassination threat on Pope Benedict XVI to “Italian businessmen and Chinese representatives of the Catholic Church” according to the Telegraph in 2012:

“Cardinal Romeo reportedly made the startling prediction of the Pope’s death during a trip to China in November 2011.”

“He seemed so sure of the fact that the people he spoke with, including Italian businessmen and Chinese representatives of the Catholic Church, were convinced that he was talking about an assassination attempt.”

“… The extraordinary comments were written up in a top-secret report, dated Dec 30, 2011, and delivered to the Pope by a senior cardinal, Dario Castrillon Hoyos, a Colombian, in January.”

“The Vatican has reportedly opened an investigation into the claims.”

“The report was written in German, apparently to limit the number of people within the Vatican who would understand it if it was inadvertently leaked.”

“It warns of a “Mordkomplott” – death plot – against Benedict.”

“‘The story was broken on Friday by an Italian daily, Il Fatto Quotidiano, with the headline ‘Plot against the Pope – he will die within 12 months’”.

“The newspaper, which has a reputation for scoops, published a page from the confidential report [Vatileaks]. ‘During his talks in China, Cardinal Romeo predicted the death of Benedict XVI within 12 months. His remarks were expressed with such certainty and resolution that the people he was speaking to thought, with a sense of alarm, that an attack on the Pope’s life was being planned,’ the paper reported.”

The newspaper with “a reputation for scoops” II Fatto Quotidiano, Fittipaldi and Calabrò appear to be linking Vatileaks to strange happenings against Benedict.

Were Vatileaks and the Vatican financial scandal as well as the Vatican gay lobby tied together as the causes that “led to the end of Ratzinger [Pope Benedict XVI]”?

Apparently, Vatican expert Dr. Taylor Marshall says that if Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano is telling the truth then Fittipaldi’s inference appears to be true.

On August 27, author and philosopher Marshall on YouTube in the video titled “Dr. Taylor Marshall ties together Vatican financial scandal with homosexual activity” summarized what led to Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation and Pope Francis’s papacy:

If Vigano is telling the truth then the Vatican gay lobby paired with the Vatileaks financial scandal apparently caused Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation and it appears that Pope Francis has “reinstated and promoted” all those who brought about the resignation.

Marshall, on YouTube, summarized what led to Benedict’s abdication:

“First of, Vigano blew the whistle on money laundering.”

“Two, the accusations of money laundering leads to the Vatileaks scandal.”

“Three, the Vatileaks scandal leads Benedict to form a secret investigation with three cardinals.”

“Four, those three cardinals expose moral rot, sexual deviancy, that is paired up with financial irregularity.”

“This is what moves the Pope to resignation
. And just to make sure there is enough pressure on him to do it and do it quick something funny goes on with the Vatican Bank beginning on January 1, 2013.”

“And it seems the powerful cardinals within Vatican City wanted it to happen fast because they don’t want the 300 page dossier released to the public because there is moral scandal in those pages.”

“That binder was left with Pope Francis, but nothing has been done. And what we see is that those who were oppose to Benedict XVI theologically, but also on administration, have been reinvolved, reinstated and promoted.”

Here is more evidence that Benedict was forced or pressured to resign.

Remember Benedict’s resignation came about because of the “[gay] sexual deviancy, that is paired up with financial irregularity” tied to Vatileaks which was apparently orchestrated by the Vatican gay lobby supposedly to “reform the Vatican Curia.”

According to the Italian website Corriere Della Sera Chronicles:

“Vatican City Father Silvano Fausti [the confessor of Cardinal Martini] said that the moment had been when Benedict XVI and [the most powerful pro-gay cardinal in the Church] Carlo Maria Martini saw each other for the last time… June 2, 2012… Martini, who died on August 31st, said to Ratzinger: Curia does not reform, you just have to leave… on 11 February 2013 [Benedict] declared his ‘renunciation’ to the pontificate.”
(Corriere.it, Corriere Della Sera Chronicles, “When Martini told Ratzinger: the Curia does not change, you have to leave,” July 18, 2015)

Moreover, the Italian website which has expertise on the Vatican, Monday Vatican reported:

“Fr. Silvano Fausti, a Jesuit who was Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini’s confessor… recounted… their [Benedict and Martini’s] last meeting… According to Fausti, Martini said this to Pope Benedict as if he were reminding him of an old agreement between them. That resignation paved the way for Pope Francis, whom Fr. Fausti admires.”

“But this story must be decoded… Benedict XVI’s pontificate was constantly under attack at every level. The old hands of the Curia, in particular, could barely stand his rule.”
(Monday Vatican, “Pope Francis: How the Narrative around Him was Constructed,” Luglio 20, 2015)

Also, Akacatholic.com reported that evidence points to financial blackmail being involved in the Benedict abdication who appeared to be attempting to uncover “financial improprieties.”:

“An article by Italian journalist Maurizio Blondet is making the rounds alleging that Pope Benedict XVI was blackmailed into abdication by forces allied with SWIFT (the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication), which had a hand in the shutdown of ATM and bank card services at the Vatican in January of 2012.”
“According to Blondet:

There was a blackmail of Benedict XVI, coming from who knows where, through SWIFT. The underlying reasons for this have not been clarified, but it is clear that SWIFT has intervened directly in the management of affairs of the Church…”

“…It strikes me as interesting that more attention isn’t being paid to the role played by Ronaldo Hermann Schmitz, the acting President of the IOR [Vatican Bank] Board at the time, given his ties to Deutsche Bank.”

“I mean, one would think that the former Deutsche Bank Executive Director, even if unable to leverage his contacts within the German banking giant to forestall such a drastic move, would have at the very least been well aware of what was coming and could have perhaps taken steps to secure the services of another financial institution, as happened in short order soon afterwards.”

“This leads me to wonder where Ronaldo Hermann Schmitz’s own interests may have lied as this was taking place.”

“Let me be clear; I have no information implicating Schmitz in any nefarious activity; I am simply making common sense observations and asking questions that, curiously enough, have apparently never been addresses by those in the media; in spite of the extensive coverage these events received.”

“In any case, one is still left to wonder what motivated Gotti Tedeschi’s removal.”

“Given that the reform of the IOR [Vatican Bank], for all intents and purposes, was all but halted while interim President Schmitz acted as caretaker until a new President could be found, one might assume that this interruption alone was the primary motive.”

“It seems rather clear for reasons addressed below, however, that the motive went well beyond simply protecting the interests of those whose financial improprieties Gotti Tedeschi was laboring to uncover, making it seem far more likely Gotti Tedeshi’s demise was undertaken in order to set in motion the events that would secure the abdication of the man who appointed him.”

“Circumstantial evidence strongly attesting to this being the case can be found in the fact that the Vatican reached an agreement with a Swiss firm to resume ATM and other bank card transactions effective February 12, 2013, just one day after Benedict XVI announced his intention to abdicate.
Indeed, as far as I can tell, nothing of note had changed between the cessation of bank card operations on January 1st and their resumption on February 12th relative to the Vatican Bank’s compliance with international banking standards. Rather, the only noteworthy thing to change was the status of Benedict’s pontificate.”

“Further evidence suggesting that the motives for Gotti Tedeschi’s removal extended beyond mere financial concerns.” [https://akacatholic.com/money-sex-and-modernism/]

Stop for a moment of silence, ask Jesus Christ what He want you to do now and next. In this silence remember God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Three Divine Persons yet One God, has an ordered universe where you can know truth and falsehood as well as never forget that He wants you to have eternal happiness with Him as his son or daughter by grace. Make this a practice. By doing this you are doing more good than reading anything here or anywhere else on the Internet.

Francis Notes:

– Doctor of the Church St. Francis de Sales totally confirmed beyond any doubt the possibility of a heretical pope and what must be done by the Church in such a situation:

“[T]he Pope… WHEN he is EXPLICITLY a heretic, he falls ipso facto from his dignity and out of the Church, and the Church MUST either deprive him, or, as some say, declare him deprived, of his Apostolic See.”
(The Catholic Controversy, by St. Francis de Sales, Pages 305-306)

Saint Robert Bellarmine, also, said “the Pope heretic is not deposed ipso facto, but must be declared deposed by the Church.”

The above box shows the results of the compilation made by Father Donald Kloster of the statistics produced by the Pew Research Organization, the Cara Research Organization of the United States Catholic Conference, the Daily Wire Survey and the CatholicPhilly.com research organization during the years 1913-1918. TLM stands for the Traditional Latin Mass. NOM stands for the Novus Ordo Mass. It is obvious that Catholics who regularly participate in Novus Ordo Masses have a much better record of fidelity to the Gospel message of Our Lord Jesus Christ than Catholics who regularly participate in Novus Ordo Masses. It is no wonder that Jorge Bergolio and Company seek to destroy the Traditional Latin Mass and replace it completely wiith the Novus Order Mass. It fits in with their plan to transform the Catholic Church into an instrument of achieving the reset of the world into conformity with the goals of Freemasonry, Communism, Socialism and all the other isms seeking to create the New Order of Human Liberation.

“Hating Whitey” Is In Vogue
July 19, 2021
Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the growing hatred of white people:
Over two decades ago, David Horowitz wrote a book, “Hating Whitey: And Other Progressive Causes,” that detailed how “Ideological hatred of whites is now a growth industry, driven by ‘civil rights’ activists and liberal academics.” Matters have only gotten worse. Now more than ever, “Hating Whitey” is in vogue.
“I hate white people.” You can’t get more declarative than that. The author, Damon Young, wrote that when he was a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times. It is a sure bet that the newspaper does not employ anyone who admits, “I hate black people.” That would be racist.
Young is not your ordinary racist. He is a specialist. He says he brushes his teeth with “black toothpaste,” and delights in using white toilet paper. He also adds a gallon of chocolate syrup to his daughter’s bottle of milk, while acknowledging that it is unhealthy: “She will have Type 2 diabetes at 4. But you can never be too young to reject anti-blackness and anti-black-ass cow’s milk.”
Some will say that this is satire. Sure it is. But it is also who he is.
Young says he likes to say the Lord’s Prayer with his family, but prefers not to end it with “Amen,” but with “And then kill whitey.”
He wrote that in 2018. This year he doubled down, writing a piece, “Whiteness Is a Pandemic.” On St. Patrick’s Day, Young told us that “Whiteness is a public health crime. It shortens life expectations, it pollutes the air, it constricts equilibrium, it devastates forests, it melts ice caps, it sparks (and funds) wars,” etc. Oh, yes, he is still a New York Times contributing opinion writer.
Dr. Chanequa Walker-Barnes teaches theology at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. She recently showcased her theological training in a chapter she wrote in a new book. Here is her first paragraph. “Dear God, Please help me to hate White people. Or at least to want to hate them. At least, I want to stop caring about them, individually and collectively. I want to stop caring about their misguided, racist souls, to stop believing that they can be better, that they can stop being racist.”
In May, Dr. Donald Moss published a piece in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, “On Having Whiteness.” He is a white male who splits his time teaching at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. He contends that “whiteness” is a “malignant, parasitic-like condition” that makes the host person “voracious, insatiable, and perverse,” noting that there is “not yet a permanent cure.” This was a peer-reviewed article.
In June, Mara Gay, who is a member of the New York Times editorial board, said she spent a weekend on Long Island and was very upset with what she saw. She said it was “disturbing” to see “dozens of American flags.” She interpreted the American flag to mean, “This is my country. This is not your country.” When Gay, who is part black, was criticized, she blamed what she called “Whiteness.”
When professionals promote “Hating Whitey,” it is not without consequence.
In April, Dr. Aruna Khilanani, a New York City psychiatrist, told a Yale audience that she fantasizes about “unloading a revolver into the head of any white person that got in my way, burying their body and wiping my bloody hands as I walked away relatively guiltless with a bounce in my step.”
In June, Itzel Ramirez, an Amazon delivery worker near San Francisco, assaulted an elderly white woman after telling her to “check her white privilege.” The 21-year-old beat the old lady into submission. She was charged with two counts of elder abuse and battery involving serious bodily injury.
Here’s a sociological fact that some will find shocking. White people never identify themselves as white persons: their identity is based on their ethnicitynot their race. That’s why we have parades named for the Irish, Italians, Poles, Germans, et al. There is no such thing as a “White-American Parade.”
It is racists, like the aforementioned writers and academics, who insist on seeing people with white skin as white people, and then hating them for what they project onto them. They have no other choice. After all, their obsession with “Hating Whitey,” and to some extent their livelihood, depends on it.

Dear Subscriber,

We have been saddened by the release of Traditionis Custodes and all its implications.

Countless priests and faithful are deeply devoted–and many more are just now joyfully discovering–the riches of our ancient liturgical patrimony. Thus, we are at a loss to understand how restricting this Mass will “promote the concord and unity of the Church.” On the contrary, we have already witnessed it causing grave confusion and spiritual harm to both priests and faithful.

As stated in 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI, and restated on the front page of every issue of Benedictus:

What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful. It behooves all of us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church’s faith and prayer, and to give them their proper place.

The Future of Benedictus

Regarding the future of Benedictus, we have received inquiries about whether we will continue to publish monthly issues, in light of the new motu proprio. Our answer is a resounding YES.

With only one issue of Benedictus in print, nearly nine thousand subscribers have clearly expressed their desire to know and worship according to the ancient Roman Rite, the Mass that Fr. Faber called “the most beautiful thing this side of heaven.”

As such, we remain convinced that there has never been a time when Benedictus has been more needed in the life of the Church. Catholics will continue looking for resources to keep them connected with the venerable calendar, prayers, meditations, and piety of the Ancient Mass–and we are determined to continue providing such a resource in Benedictus.

In fact, we are already busy adding even more unique content for future issues, such as a “Sacred Signs” section, explaining the mystical meanings behind the ceremonies of the Roman Rite according to medieval sources–most of which do not exist in the Pauline Missal of 1969, and can only be experienced in the Traditional Latin Mass.

What You Can Do Now

In the meantime, we encourage our subscribers to contact their local clergy and personally remind them of your appreciation for the traditional rites–rites that have formed centuries of Saints–and respectfully insist on “giving them their proper place.”

In the meantime, rest assured–Benedictus isn’t going anywhere.
Traditional. Accessible. Beautiful.

BENEDICTUS.

THE CATHOLIC MONITOR

Flashback: Is Cardinal Burke Lying?

According to Dictionary.com, the definition of the word “lying” as a noun is “the telling of lies, or false statements; untruthfulness,” whereas as a adjective it means “telling or containing lies, deliberately untruthful; deceitful; false.”

It appears that Cardinal Raymond Burke may be lying in the sense of “telling… false statements.” Only Burke can tells us if he is “deliberately [being] untruthful.”

Cardinal Burke in his recent interview with the New York Times the newspaper asked him to explain his implications of Francis possibly backing heresy in the Amazon Synod working document, stating:

“You’re effectively implying that the pope would be leading a schism?”

Burke responded: “Yes.”

The Times then asked: “Isn’t that a deep contradiction of how Catholics think about the office of the papacy?”

Burke replied:

“Of course. Exactly. It’s a total contradiction. I pray that this wouldn’t happen. And to be honest with you, I don’t know how to address such a situation. As far as I see, there’s no mechanism in the universal law of the church to deal with such a situation.”
(New York Times, “Cardinal Burke: I’m called the Enemy of the Pope, which I am Not,” November 9, 2019)

As far as I can see, Cardinal Burke in that paragraph made a “false statement” because in an 2016 interview with the Catholic World Report website in responding to questions he apparently said exactly the opposite:

“CWR: Can the pope legitimately be declared in schism or hersey?”

“Cardinal Burke: ‘If a Pope would formally profess heresy he would cease, by that act, to be the Pope. It’s automatic. And so, that could happen… ‘”

“… CWR: Who is competent to declare him to be in heresy?”

“Cardinal Burke: ‘It would have to be members of the College of Cardinals.'”
(Catholic World Report, “No, I am not saying that Pope Francis is in heresy,” December 19, 2016)

Sadly, it is almost impossible to believe that Burke could say “there’s no mechanism in the universal law of the church to deal with such a situation.”

As the Catholic World Report interview shows, he knows the teachings of the Doctors of the Church and some of the greatest theologians of the Church summed up by Doctor of the Church St. Francis de Sales:

“The Pope.. when he is explicitly a heretic… the Church must either deprive him or as some say declare him deprived of his Apostlic See.”
(The Catholic Controversy by St. Francis de Sales, Pages 305-306)

If Cardinal Burke or anyone else can show me that I am wrong in the above piece I will be happy to delete this post and apologize. But, I cannot honestly see where I am wrong.

TLM said…That’s the line that stunned me: “There is no mechanism”…..it seems like word salad to me. He seems to be putting a spin on things that can and cannot be done according to the ‘lay of the land’ so to speak. Although, this said, there are some who claim that things are going on ‘behind the scenes’ that they are not privy to speak about, so…we may not be aware of ‘plans in the making’. It has to be a very precarious situation seeing as though Francis and clan are tied to the hip of the globalists. I compare to an octopus with many tentacles…the Institutional Church at this point is absolutely one of those tentacles. It’s much, much bigger than ‘just the Church’. They’re working on the ‘One World Order’ together. They’re a ‘team’, it’s very obvious. Just my observation… 7:03 AM

Fr. VF said…Those of us who were children at the end of Vatican II grew up accustomed to there being two “parties” in the Church–the “liberals” and “conservatives.”

It is now clear that the “conservatives” were liberals, and the “liberals” were Satanists. They were running the Church from 1958 at the very latest. They were powerful enough to get rid of Sr. Lucy in 1959 and suppress the Third Secret–which almost certainly incriminated them and condemned the coming council and new Mass.11:39 AM

S said…Francis Pope? Nope. Ratzinger out flanked these one world order demons. The future of the church is here, the 3rd secret is out the rear window.12:10 PM

Aqua said…When we personally see another person commit a crime, a murder perhaps, we don’t need a Court to tell us what we saw. “This guy shot that guy and that guy is now dead”.

The person who pulled the trigger shall not be strung up by that witness or that mob. The witness must, however, apprehend (somehow) the murderer for trial. *Suspect* will have his day. He will he represented before the Bar. Official judgment will one day be proclaimed.

But the suspect has to be taken off the street and placed in jail. Immediately. We saw the crime. Of that there is no doubt.

The witnesses don’t dispense judgement. We remand the *suspect* to *proper authorities* to do their job according to Law, under Oath, before God.

The spiritual crime originally occurred at the calling of the Conclave while a valid Pope still lived and had not properly, fully resigned his Office. The spiritual crime (worse than murder because it blasphemes God and ultimately murders souls) is the alteration of God’s Cornerstone, the Papal Office which is not ours to change, alter, “expand”. All the other crimes that have occurred since are the result of the “perp” still walking the streets free as a bird.

Cardinal Burke: do your duty!12:31 PM

MEwbank said…Some have presumed in recent years to allege that both Francisco Suarez and St. Robert Bellarmine were wrong in what each said about the deposition of a heretical pope.

Assuming that one discerns ‘formal’ heresy and not just ‘material’ heresy in a pope, Suarez insisted that he could not be truly judged a heretic until proper authorities (say, the bishops or a preponderance of hierarchs) judged him to be so.

Since Suarez tended to focus upon matters as a jurist, his ‘legalism’ here is understandable.

St. Robert Bellarmine, in contrast, insisted that, even though it is improbable that Divine Providence would permit a pope to fall into ‘formal’ heresy, if such were to occur he would ‘ipso facto’ be deposed and any declaration of such would merely confirm formally what already was.

Bellarmine reasons more comprehensively as a true and profound moral theologian.

It is an unfortunate fact that most all hierarchs in the Church for a long time have only taken advanced studies in Canon Law, and so they tend to find shelter in legalist or juridical interpretations of scenarios.

We have few, if any, profound and true theologians among the hierarchy.

An exception would be Pope (so-called) ‘Emeritus’ Benedict xvi.

So, here we are with a majority of rather cowardly hierarchs, a significant portion being truly Modernist, quite a number being rather unintelligent, and some, like Cardinal Burke, who is intelligent yet who takes refuge in the inability of a mainly juridical focus to confront the gravity of what needs to be confronted.

Thus, the implosion of the institutional Church continues virtually uncontested.

But we know this will not continue indefinitely, no matter how dismal things may become before it is corrected.

Burke: “Of course. Exactly. It’s a total contradiction.”

– – –

One of the lessons of logic is that, if your assumption leads to an absurdity, then the assumption is false (it’s a principle we see at work in the form of argument known as reductio ad absurdum).

Now the cardinal sees that his belief about the Pope has led him to an absurdity: “It’s a total contradiction,” he says.

So, just by reason of logic, we see that he now has to change course and deny that “the Pope would be leading a schism,” which means he needs to come to believe either:

A) that the man presumed to be Pope is in fact the Pope but would not in fact be leading a schism, or

B) that the man presumed to be Pope is not in fact the Pope.

Believing A or B is cause for denying that “the Pope would be leading a schism.” Regardless, Burke’s admission that his current view entails a contradiction is reason alone for him to change his beliefs. The admission, if he’s being serious, creates an intellectual duty for him to make this change. It would be irrational of him not to.2:34 PM

Laramie Hirsch said…”I’m Cardinal Burke. I’m a cardinal. Gollee, gee. I don’t know how to deal with schismatics or heretics. Yet, I’m a man with authority in the Church. Gollee, I just can’t do anything. I simply don’t know the mechanisms.”3:04 PM

lynn said…As Tonto use to say to the Lone Ranger….white man speak with forked tongue. “Catholic” Duplicity is an invention of the jesuits and the jesuits have been running the show for 500 years. A very deep look needs to be undertaken to investigate the origins, history and goals of the jesuits. They weren’t kicked out of 89 countries because they were devout, humble lovers of the Holy Trinity and Holy Tradition.6:41 PM

MEwbank said…I’m going to show my age, but I knew many pre-Vatican ii Jesuits who were incredibly brilliant and orthodox.

As for centuries past, they were persecuted often because they opposed Masonic plots and other Enlightenment movements towards secularism.

But certain individuals, particularly in the twentieth-century, definitely betrayed their original charism.

And Bergoglio, like so many others who presently pretend to merit affiliation with the Societas Iesu, in no way ever received the formation Jesuits were given in eras past.

IT’S ALL ABOUT GETTING THE INJECTION FOR A MANUFACTURED ILLUSION SAYS EXPERT ON UNDERWRITING INTANGIBLE ASSETSFeast of Alexis the Beggar
July 17, 2021
Dr. David Miller explains that patent filings for vaccines are evidence that no “novel” coronavirus has emerged in the last two decades.  You will be impressed with his knowledge and his delivery of the subject. Just before the “emergence” of COVID-19 there was a frantic reapplication of patents to make sure the vaccine money went according to plan.  Here are two working links.https://www.fromrome.info/2021/07/11/dr-david-martin-leading-international-underwriter-says-the-pandemic-is-a-total-scam/https://brandnewtube.com/watch/a-manufactured-illusion-dr-david-martin-with-reiner-fuellmich-9-7-21_hPChWe1no7nxGDM.htmlDr. Martin in this video lays out all the documented evidence that any lawyer in any nation can use to file suit against any of the operators, journalists, corporations, and politicians who are pushing the COVID narrative, as participants in a global biological war and crime against humanity.Since 1998 Dr. David Miller has been in the business of tracking innovations around the world and how they are financed. His company is the largest underwriter of intangible assets in the world.  In particular, he has studied the economics of the issuance of patents.  He can track who, when and what is happening with respect to medical research. He reports a recorded 4000 plus patents around the coronavirus that gave rise to SARS1 and now SARS2.  He said Spring, 2020 is critical.   In this interview with German researcher Dr. Reiner Fuellmich he explains that the lock downs for COVID, the orders for social distance, the masks, etc are all built on lies based on a non-existent “new” infectious coronavirus. Many roads that finance this virus lead from Anthony Fauci and his group at NAIAD of NIH to researcher Dr. Ralph Baric at UNC-CH.  On April 19, 2002 Fauci’s group applied for a patent (#7279327) that lays out specific gene sequencing and describes how to synthetically modify by taking computer codes and turning the result into a pathogen.   They made SARS2! One of the characteristics of the “Great Reset” will be a network of people who will have privileges and the rest of us will not.[1]  They have been involved in a multi-decade scheme to distribute a vaccine manufactured to be a bio-weapon.  It is designed to depopulate and to leave the rest of us in slavery.  Just to put this into a pro-life context.   The COVID vaccine is the intermediate step between old-fashioned eugenics and the new concept of “biodigital convergence.”[2]Miller has studied the countless modifications of the genetic sequence of a coronavirus and the many patent filings associated with them.  He explained there were over 120 patents issued for sequences with minor variations.  But these same sequences existed as early as 1999.   Definitely, this coronavirus (COV-19 = SARS 2) is not novel.  It is at least 22 years old!At one point the patent office examiner turned down an application because one cannot patent a “naturally occurring substance”, but the Center for Disease Control (CDC) overrode the objection and eventually got the patent.  The craziness of timing says a lot.  For example, Miller explained that Sequoia Science Pharmaceutical Company in MD filed a patent for a treatment on something that had been invented only three days earlier! The problem is that 80 percent of the identifiable sequence for the coronavirus has overlap.  A new variant emerges depending on where you choose to start and stop the sequence in your patent application. For those of you who are worried about the so-called emerging new delta variant.  Today it is the leading cry in the push to get more people vaccinated.  He explained there is no point of reference that says there is a “delta variant” that is distinct.  There could be an “omega variant” tomorrow depending on the selection of the fragment of sequence chosen.  The world  needs the EXACT SEQUENCE of this “novel” coronavirus but these researchers are making it illusive.  No one has yet stated with 100 percent certainty what it is.The public health officials are the ones who are now setting the agenda.  See footnote 1 for who these people are.   They needed the media hype after they created an illusion of an event that they manufactured.  There are hundreds of patents seeking treatment for something that had been invented.  Ponder this. Why is there little or no effort to combat the virus by making known treatments easily available.  Instead, they have put up obstacles for getting good treatment.  It is all about getting people injected![3]In case you wonder about the number of deaths in 2020 as compared to other years, and whether there are indeed large numbers of “excess” deaths due to COVID as hype would have you believe, we refer you to the data reported here.   There is no statistically significant increase in the growth of the overall death rate over the years from 2019 to 2021!For your information, Dr. Fuellmich is a trial lawyer licensed to practice in California and Germany who is working on an international scale to form a network to stop the COVID-19 crime against humanity. For those of you who are not familiar with this great feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,  you should take time to learn about the Brown Scapular and that she requested it be worn as a protection from evil and danger.   Ask Our Lady of Mount Carmel to continue to keep her mantle around you and your loved ones.Prayers to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Flashback: Why are Cdl. Burke & the Francis Catholic Media like the Leashed Dog in the Foghorn Leghorn Cartoon?

In the old Warner Brothers cartoon the rooster Foghorn Leghorn’s archenemy George P. Dog was on a leash which meant he could only go as far as the length of the rope leash and had to stop.

Foghorn even painted a line on the ground with a sign reading “Rope Limit” which George P. Dog could never go beyond.

Why are Cardinal Raymond Burke and the Francis conservative media as well as Traditionalist Catholic media such the Remnant’s Michael Matt like Leghorn’s archenemy George P. Dog not allowed to go passed the line with the sign that reads “Rope Limit”?

Why is the once talked about Formal Correction of Francis by Burke and the so-called faithful Catholic media now beyond the “Rope Limit”?

Why is even discussing the possibility of an imperfect council and/or a cardinal and bishop investigation into the Francis conclave and Pope Benedict XVI resignation beyond the “Rope Limit”?

Who and/or what has made Cardinal Burke and the so-called faithful Catholic media into George P. Dog with a rope leash and a “Rope Limit.”

Who or what controls them?

Why are they forbidden to even give reasoned arguments, instead of straw man arguments that don’t counter our stated dissertations or name calling, against Bishop Rene Gracida and Latin language expert Br. Alexis Bugnolo who put forward serious reasoned dissertations from canon law and Pope John Paul II’s conclave constitution?

If they really think we who follow Bishop Gracida, Br. Bugnolo and others are wrong and headed to hell for being in schism from Francis then out of simple charity for our souls they should counter our dissertations and arguments.

If they really believe we are wrong and headed to hell and refuse to seriously give us real arguments then they apparently have lost the supernatural virtue of charity.

If they really believe what they say then for charity’s sake they should attempt to save us from hell for being in schism from Francis:

But, all we hear are straw man arguments that don’t counter our stated dissertations, name calling propaganda, silence or the noise of them running away as fast as they can from serious reasoned back and forth argumentation.

Just to give fair warning:

We are not going away.

We are growing.

Soon we will be to be too big to ignore.

As even Church Militant’s Francis conservative Michael Voris reported we are becoming the majority of faithful Catholics in Rome. The same thing is happening in the United States and if you can’t stop us now we will probably grow to be the majority of faithful Catholics in America.

New post on Roma Locuta EstThe Next Conclave: A Nightmare Scenarioby Steven O’ReillyJuly 17, 2021 (Steven O’Reilly) – Yesterday, Pope Francis issued Traditionis Custodes, his motu proprio which places significant restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) going forward. I will not comment in great detail on its harsh measures as others have already done so. However, for the ‘pope of mercy’ who speaks often of those on the ‘peripheries’ of the Church, it is clear neither his mercy nor the peripheries extend as far as those attached to the TLM.  “Irreversible Change” One of the oddities of Traditionis Custodes is not so much that Francis did what he did; but rather it is when he did it. That is, he did not wait until the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI before attempting to abrogate Summorum Pontificum. I suspect we would have seen something like Traditionis Custodes long ago had Benedict passed away soon after stepping down from the Chair of St. Peter. That Pope Francis could no longer wait for Benedict’s death to issue TC, along with the fact the motu proprio went into effect immediately, clearly suggests an impatience or urgency on the part of Francis.Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez is said to be very close to Pope Francis, e.g., reportedly being the Pope’s ghostwriter for various documents, such as Amoris Laetitia. There is something he said a few years ago that seems to  explain the impatience and urgency noted above. Archbishop Fernandez has been quoted as saying the following (emphasis added):”The slow pace is necessary to insure the effectiveness of the changes… You have to realize that he (Francis) is aiming at reform that is irreversible. If one day he should sense that he is running out of time and doesn’t have enough time to do what the spirit is asking him, you can be sure he will speed up.” (Crisis Magazine. “Clerical Machiavellians with Magical Beliefs“, William Kilpatrick, 11/06/2018)Consequently, perhaps what we are seeing is that Pope Francis, now 84, ‘senses that he is running out of time‘ and therefore he is ‘speeding up.’ Francis wants to hurry to make changes or ‘reform’ which will be “irreversible.” This idea of Francis wanting to make “irreversible change” also shows up in words of Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, former Superior General of the Jesuits, of whom Phil Lawler once wrote:”Father Adolfo Nicolas, the former worldwide leader of the Jesuit order, reported that Pope Francis once told him that he hoped to remain as Pontiff until “the changes are irreversible (see ‘The new cardinals: Pope Francis bids for ‘irreversible change’, Phil Lawler, September 3, 2019).As far as other attempts at “irreversible” change, only Francis and Heaven knows what is next on his chopping block.  Francis has already endeavored to improve the odds his changes are irreversible through his episcopal appointments, and even more importantly through the cardinals he has created over the course of his pontificate.  More on that in a bit.”Four or Five Years“In researching some of the quotes for the article, there was a curious thing that caught my attention. The Pope has said in various places he expected his pontificate to brief, perhaps “four or five years.” Consider, for example (emphasis added):In an interview with the Mexican broadcaster Televisa published Friday, the Argentine Pope predicted a “brief” tenure for himself. “I have the feeling that my pontificate will be brief: four or five years; I do not know, even two or three,” Pope Francis, 78, said. “Two have already passed. It is a somewhat vague sensation.” (Time Magazine)Pope Bergoglio has opined a few times his pontificate would be brief, perhaps “four or five years.” This mention of “four or five years,” plus the fact his closest comrades say he wanted “irreversible change” is something very curious, as it echoes precisely a talking point intended to sell his candidacy just before the 2013 conclave.  For one, Andrea Tornielli, at the time a Vatican correspondent (“vaticanista”) and a friend of Cardinal Bergoglio (later to be given a position in the Vatican), published essentially a press release for Cardinal Bergoglio’s candidacy on March 2, 2013 (see hereherehere, and here). Tornielli quoted an unnamed cardinal as saying: “Four years of Bergoglio would be enough to change things.” In another echo of this Bergoglian theme, ex-Cardinal McCarrick was lobbied by an “influential Italian gentleman” (see Villanova Speech) who lobbied him to campaign for Bergoglio, saying in part that Bergoglio could change the Church in “five years” (see hereherehere, and here). The same Bergoglian theme bubbled up among other sources at the time.  In sum, it was quoted by at least three separate reporters using two to possibly three separate sources — not to mention its use by McCarrick’s visitor [2]. We do know Bergoglio himself had said he believe he’d be pope for only four to five years, and that he spoke of wanting “irreversible change.” Consequently, it seems quite likely if not probable that Bergoglio was the original source of the statement (i.e., “Four years of Bergoglio would be enough to change things”) – and that Tornielli (who had dinner with Bergoglio on February 27, 2013), and the “influential Italian gentleman”, and other cardinals had heard this papal campaign slogan in some form directly from Bergoglio himself prior to the 2013 conclave.A Horrid ThoughtWe know that Pope Francis went into the 2013 conclave with an agenda: irreversible change. The question is from his standpoint, how does he insure it is irreversible? As of now, over 50% of the cardinals were appointed by Francis.  These new cardinals, for the most part, seem to have been picked because they are Bergoglians. Therefore, it appears quite likely, if not probable, that the next conclave will produce a Pope Francis II.  As horrid a thought as this is — barring Divine intervention; another horrid thought came to me: what if these “odds” aren’t good enough for Francis? Consider, Pope Francis knows his own election, dependent on cardinals created by Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI, was no sure thing.  Indeed, his own election required the aid of the St. Gallen mafia, his own campaigning, the possible help of an Italian vaticanista, the help of the “influential Italian gentleman“, the help of McCarrick (all discussed in The Conclave Chronicles), and a questionably-timed police raid the morning of the conclave that knee-capped the chances of his chief rival for the papacy (see The Forgotten ‘October Surprise’ of the 2013 ConclaveThe Forgotten ‘October Surprise’ (Part II): Cui Bono?). If such happy “coincidences” were necessary for his own election; will Francis leave it to chance that his hoped for successor — who he hopes will secure his “irreversible” legacy — will be as ‘fortunate’ in the next conclave?  Or, could Francis do more to improve the odds?As horrid as it is to imagine it, there is something more Francis could do to virtually guarantee a successor along the lines he wants — at least as far as human agency goes. Theoretically, Pope Francis could alter the laws governing papal conclaves, or scrap them all together. He could, theoretically, enact new papal legislation for conclaves that would restrict the number of qualified Cardinal electors to a small group of Cardinals. There is something of a precedent for this going back to the time of Pope Nicholas II (see Here) when cardinal-bishops[1] had a leading role in selecting the candidate for the papacy (see also the election of Pope Innocent II and the election controversy involving anti-pope Anacletus). So, theoretically, in hopes of making his reforms “irreversible,” Francis could restrict eligible Cardinal-electors to a trusted set of Cardinals, for example, perhaps those who sit on his Counsel of Cardinal Advisors, at one time totaling eight cardinals but now seven.Perhaps such a scenario is no more than a scary hypothetical.  No more than an improbable nightmare scenario. Then again, this is the Pope who gave us Amoris Laetitia, Pachamama, the Abu Dhabi statement, the Scalfari interviews, and a host of other outrages, most recently Traditionis Custodes. This is a Pope who want “irreversible” change.Buckle your seatbelts. It will be a wild ride to the end of this pontificate as Francis “speeds up.”  Pray for the Church, and let us pray for Pope Francis that he remembers the Lord’s words to Peter: “Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you like wheat. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and thou being once converted, confirm thy brethren” (Luke 22:31-32).Steven O’Reilly is a graduate of the University of Dallas and the Georgia Institute of Technology. As I discuss in more detail in my original article, “The influential Italian Gentleman,”  Tornielli cites an anonymous cardinal, as indicated above. Gerald O’Connell, in his book, The Election of Pope Francis discusses the famous quote. In it, one of O’Connell vaticanisti colleagues, Mathilde Burgos, quotes Cardinal Errazuriz, using the same line: “Four years of Bergoglio would be enough to change things!” While it is possible Errazuriz used the line with both Burgos and Tornielli, writer Paul Vallely quotes Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor use of the line (see here): “”Four years of Bergoglio would be enough to change things,” Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor, and an old friend of Francis, told me.”  This is curious indeed.  We have Cardinal Errazuriz using the line with a Chilean reporter, and we have either Cardinal Errazuriz or Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor using the same line with Tornielli.  Or was it yet another cardinal that used it with Tornielli? With such an circuitous pedigree, the “four years” line appears to be a pre-packaged, electioneering talking point manufactured to defuse concerns cardinals might have about Bergoglio’s age–and indeed there had been such concerns. We know the line was used with at least three different journalists, and was possibly used by two or even three different cardinals, and by the “influential Italian gentleman.” Yet, given this commonality, one may rightly wonder whether the line was even original to any of them!  There is the real and amusing prospect that Cardinal Bergoglio himself was the ultimate and original source of the pithy phrase. Steven O’Reilly | July 18, 2021 at 1:54 am | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: https://wp.me/p7YMML-6V5
