WHY VORIS GETS IT WRONG HERE ON SACRAMENTAL THEOLOGY

There are a lot of issues all mixed up into one discourse. First, to understand it, I suggest you watch the show AJ Baalman and I did over at OMC Radio TV, about Michael Voris (Here — Google and DuckDuckGo have removed it from their search results), to understand his ties to the Brazilian Bank which backed the Mafia of St. Gallen.

Second, one must consider two things in any ordination of a priest or consecration of a bishop: the Sacrament and the Ritual.

The Sacrament was instituted by Christ, and its form cannot change.

The Rituals was instituted by the Apostles or their successors, and during history they have changed.

The Sacrament in the present case of ordinations or episcopal consecrations, is the sacred sign signifying the conferral of grace. It is composed of two things: the formula of words which signifies the form of the sacrament, and the actions of the bishop ordaining or consecrating, which constitute the matter.

The form and matter is instituted by Christ and cannot change. But the formula and the actions can vary from age to age.

Let’s take the case of the Consecration of a Bishop. The matter is the laying on of hands. But whether this is done with the anointing of oil on the top of the head, or forehead, in a sign of a cross, or a triple sign of the cross, has varied from place to place and age to age. But there has always been the laying on of hands.

The form is constituted by the formula of words uttered by the Bishop(s) consecrating a bishop. This formula differs in different rites of the Church and even in the Roman Church it has varied in ages past and after Vatican II. What the formula signifies, however, is the same, the confer of the highest grace of the priesthood, to govern the people of God.

Sedevacantists usually deny this Sacramental Theology, and insist that the Church has always held a different sacramental theology. They are liars, of course, but it will be useful to uncover their lie.

Sedevacantists hold that the formula and actions have always been the same and have never changed, and that the formula and action before the reign of Pope Pius XII were the only valid ones to confer the Sacrament of episcopal consecration. They are led by their absurdity to deny the episcopate to all of the other 23 rites of the Church and most of Christendom during most of its history, not to mention all the Bishops consecrated in the new rite since Vatican II.

For Sedevacantists, if there was one too many signs of the cross, or if the hands touched the wrong part of the head, then the consecration was invalid. Also, if there was any variation at all in the formula, the consecration was invalid.

The Sedevacantists hold this position, because they need a theology which makes them appear to be the only saviors of the Church so that they can justify their violation of ecclesiastical jurisdiction in nearly everything they do.

The Catholic Position

But the Catholic position is not a single one, in these matters. Because while the Catholic position holds that the same form and matter must be retained, we do admit that the formula of the words and the elaboration of the ritual actions, does and can add to the sanctity of the ritual and confer more habitual and accidental graces upon the Bishop or priest consecrated. This is because while both Bishops, one consecrated in one rite, and another consecrated in another, are equally valid, because they have received the same one Sacrament instituted by Christ, they can have different quantities and qualities of graces by reason of the more efficacious or less efficacious prayers said during the ceremony.

This is because, Christ said, “Ask and you shall receive”, from which it follows, that if you omit to ask for it, you will not get it.

Medieval Bishops fasted and made vigil for days before consecrating  priest or bishop, and those to be ordained or consecrated did likewise. The ceremony lasted for hours, and was celebrated with the most elaborate rituals. Thus it is not for nothing that most Saint Bishops lived in ages pasts, and except for Martyrs, there are practically no saint bishops today, or if they are, they never worked any noticeable miracles.

However, many others hold the opinion that the Sacrament itself contains all the graces conferred and that the additional rituals confer nothing extra, special or unique. I think that is an untenable and indefensible position, however. But those who hold it fail to distinguish between the essence of the sacrament and the proper or improper accidents of it.

Thus, it is perfectly legitimate for a Catholic priest who was ordained in the New Rite, to want to receive greater and better graces by having those prayers and rituals which were not included in the New Rite, prayed over them by a Bishop.

The error, however, into which many can fall, is this: that if a Bishop has been validly consecrated, he has the root of all the power of the Sacrament of Episcopal Orders, and thus, even if he was not himself consecrated in the Old Rite, he can consecrate in the Old Rite and confer all the same graces.

And thus, Voris is wrong to imply that the actions he reports in his video necessarily signify schism from the Church or the belief that the New Rites do not validly confer the Sacrament.

As for where such a ceremony of completion be performed: since it is not the conferral of a Sacrament, but a private ritual, it can be held anywhere. There is no canon or liturgical law against it. So to fault any bishop for offering such prayers at Mel Gibson’s chapel is pushing scrupulosity to the limits.

Voris has a degree in Theology, and so, I do not think there is an excuse for him making such errors. And I hope he accepts the correction, I give him here publicly.

We should avoid harsh condemnations of others, and seek to know the matter clearly before doing so. Yes, Sedevacantism is a grave error, but it is more a psychological excuse for acting outside the law. And yes, Voris is correct in pointing out that many are driven to such a position after years of unbridled abuse by Bishops and Popes. With him on that, I am in total agreement.

Finally, I think we should show respect for the clergy. For just as a couple may want to renew their marriage vows in the Old Rite, without casting doubt on the validity of their vows in the New, what is wrong for Bishops and priests and deacons to want to do something similar? It shows love and devotion for the Sacraments and a very high conscientiousness for their sacred status.

And that should be praised, not subjected to suspicion.

A separation of propaganda and reality is called for to avoid what is becoming a popular descent into yesterday’s way of thinking.

I don’t agree with the premises. If we hold an opinion about other races, the reason why we hold this opinion is not irrelevant and needs closer investigation and understanding. Let’s be clear and talk about racism of whites against blacks (the reverse which definitely exists can be analyzed similarly but from different data points. A white person may have in mind the data that 70% of young blacks now do not have a legal father. They are raised not very effectively by their mother as a sole parent who might have many men in her life. That young man may have several half brothers and sisters. He does not really feel he belongs to a solid family.. he starts joining a gang and conducts many illegal operations. So the racism of the white man has a solid base of data to be first very wary of any black young man that looks like he comes with such baggage. But that is not the end of the perception. Indeed it has been proven that we think by categories. So the white man who had a negative view of the black young man can be justified, in view of the above data, to carry this prejudice. HOWEVER, the mind of the white man can modify his perception of a singular black man. This second effort of perception is called RESPECT… re-spectare: look a second time. Now the white man looks at the black man as an individual which gives him the possibility of finding many aspects of the black man’s personality and life experiences. Most likely the white man’s perception will be strongly modified. So it is important for all of us to learn how to exercise this mental (but also, naturally, charitable and wilful) effort to bring respect to our habits of perception of all individuals. I taught business ethics to classes who were composed mostly of black women at Strayer University. I told them about “respect” and they generally agreed and appreciated this reasoning. P.S. Every Council has affirmed The Unity Of The Holy Ghost so why would you possibly need an addition council to declare that which every Catholic must believe by “Divine and Catholic Faith” must be believed with Divine and Catholic Faith?

It is not possible for a counterfeit schismatic church to subsist within Christ’s One, Holy, Catholic, And Apostolic Church, outside of which, there is no Salvation, due to The Unity Of The Holy Ghost. (Filioque)

The fact is:

1) Jorge Bergoglio’s heresy was external and made public and notorious, when as a cardinal, he stated in his book, On Heaven and Earth, in regards to same-sex sexual relationships, and thus same-sex sexual acts, prior to his election as pope, on page 117, demonstrating that he does not hold, keep, or teach The Catholic Faith, ipso facto separating himself from The One Body Of Christ, and he continues to act accordingly:

“If there is a union of a private nature, there is neither a third party, nor is society affected. Now, if the union is given the category of marriage, there could be children affected. Every person needs a male father and a female mother that can help shape their identity.”- Jorge Bergoglio, denying The Sanctity of the marital act within The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, and the fact that God, The Most Holy And Undivided Blessed Trinity, Through The Unity Of The Holy Ghost, Is The Author Of Love, Of Life, And Of Marriage, while denying sin done in private is sin.

We can know through both The Catholic Faith and reason that the election of a schismatic to the Papacy would be invalid ipso facto.

Police Arrest Catholic Priest for Silently Praying Outside Abortion Clinic

Police in the UK have arrested a Catholic priest for silently praying outside an abortion clinic — in what is the third such arrest in recent weeks of peaceful pro-life people.

Father Sean Gough stood silently holding a “praying for free speech” sign near a closed abortion facility to protest recent cases of bogus arrest. But that didn’t stop law enforcement from enforcing a law specifically designed to silent pro-life people and arresting Father Gough and charging him. Father Gough was interrogated, charged with breaching censorship zone which prohibits prayer and the sharing of pregnancy support information.

Gough also faces a further charge related to parking his car, which for some time has had on it a small “unborn lives matter” bumper sticker, within the same area. The area surrounding the facility, located on Station Road, has been covered by a local Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), in force since November, which prohibits prayer, distributing information about pregnancy help services, and other activities considered to constitute “protest”.

For peacefully supporting free speech within the censorship zone, Father Sean Gough was charged with “intimidating service-users” of the abortion facility. This was despite the fact that all this happened while the abortion facility was closed.

“I pray wherever I go, inside my head, for the people around me. How can it be a crime for a priest to pray? I often pray in my head near the abortion facility, but at the time in question, I was praying for free speech, which is under severe pressure in our country today. At all times, I believed my actions to be lawful – freedom of expression, especially when peaceful, is protected in domestic and international law. It is deeply undemocratic to censor public streets, particularly those spaces where we know that many women have benefitted from peaceful offers of help about services available,” said Father Sean Gough.

When police officers initially approached the priest holding the “praying for free speech sign”, they told Father Gough that they did not think that he was breaking rules. However, the priest was later invited for interview at the police station, interrogated on his actions, and eventually criminally charged.

The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently dropped the charges against Father Gough, but made clear that they could be reinstated. Like Isabel Vaughan-Spruce, Father Gough has stated his intention to pursue a clear verdict on his charges in court, in order to clear his name.

Earlier this month, charges were dropped against a pro-life woman who was arrested for praying outside an abortion business.

The good news in the UK comes on the heels of the victory in federal court in Pennsylvania for Mark Houck, who faced 11 years in prison on bogus charges againt him for peacefully protesting abortion.

British police arrested Isabel Vaughan-Spruce late last year for praying silently outside an abortion facility in Birmingham after a censorship zone had been approved prohibiting pro-life people from protesting, counseling, praying or even being located in the zone. Vaughan-Spruce was carrying no sign and remained completely silent until approached by officers and said she “might” have been praying at the time of her arrest.

“It’s abhorrently wrong that I was searched, arrested, interrogated by police and charged simply for praying in the privacy of my own mind. Censorship zones purport to ban harassment, which is already illegal. Nobody should ever be subject to harassment. But what I did was the furthest thing from harmful – I was exercising my freedom of thought, my freedom of religion, inside the privacy of my own mind. Nobody should be criminalized for thinking and for praying, in a public space in the UK,” said Isabel Vaughan-Spruce, following her arrest for silent prayer.   

She was eventually charged with with four counts of failing to comply with a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) by breaching an exclusion zone outside a Birmingham abortion clinic.

Her legal team says the charges have been dropped, but they are concerned they could be reinstated down the road.

Vaughan-Spruce was due in court on Wednesday at Birmingham Magistrates Court.

“It was due to happen today but charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. Hopefully, we’ll know more soon and can update you then. It’s a lot of work but hopefully, God will use it for good,” Vaughan-Spruce told The Epoch Times by email.

A spokesperson for Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) told The Epoch Times by email: “We review all cases ahead of court where the police have charged. Following a review of this case, we concluded that there was insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction.”

But, Jeremiah Igunnubole, Legal Counsel for ADF UK, says the charges could make a return appearance if any evidence turns up in corut against her that could lead to a conviction. That could lead to police reopening the case.

“The Crown Prosecution Service has written to the Justice’s Chief Executive under section 23 of the Prosecution of Offences Act. The effect of the correspondence is that there will be no court hearing on 2 February.”

“Although the CPS has indicated it would drop the charges, it made it clear that they could be reinstated,” he added.

“This leaves Isabel in significant legal uncertainty and her priority is to obtain legal clarity on what, if any, liability she may incur in the future based on the charges laid against her,” said Igunnubole.

The censorship zone measure introduced by Birmingham authorities criminalises individuals percieved to be “engaging in any act of approval or disapproval or attempted act of approval or disapproval” in relation to abortion, including through “verbal or written means, prayer or counselling…”.  

Vaughan-Spruce had stood near the abortion facility whilst it was closed on three occasions, in which she says she “might” have been praying.

When shown pictures of herself outside the abortion facility by police, Vaughan-Spruce was questioned as to whether she was praying in the photos. She said she could not answer – some of the time she had spent praying, other times she had been distracted and thought about other things, such as her lunch. She maintains that both of these thoughts were equally peaceful and imperceptible and that neither should be criminalised.    

“Isabel’s experience should be deeply concerning to all those who believe that our hard-fought fundamental rights are worth protecting. It is truly astonishing that the law has granted local authorities such wide and unaccountable discretion, that now even thoughts deemed “wrong” can lead to a humiliating arrest and a criminal charge,” said Jeremiah Igunnubole, Legal Counsel for ADF UK, the legal organisation supporting Vaughan-Spruce.  

 “A mature democracy should be able to differentiate between criminal conduct and the peaceful exercise of constitutionally protected rights. Isabel, a woman of good character, and who has tirelessly served her community by providing charitable assistance to vulnerable women and children, has been treated no better than a violent criminal. The recent increase in buffer zone legislation and orders is a watershed moment in our country. We must ask ourselves whether we are a genuinely democratic country committed to protecting the peaceful exercise of the right to freedom of speech. We are at serious risk of mindlessly sleepwalking into a society that accepts, normalises, and even promotes the “tyranny of the majority,” he continued.

As part of her conditions for bail, Vaughan-Spruce was told that she should not contact a local Catholic priest who was also involved in pro-life work – a condition that was later dropped.

Police also imposed restrictions, as part of her bail, on Vaughan-Spruce engaging in public prayer beyond the PSPO area, stating that this was necessary to prevent further offences. 

Vaughan-Spruce is the Director of the UK March for Life and has volunteered for many years in support of women in crisis pregnancies.   

“I have devoted much of my life to supporting women in crisis pregnancies with everything that they need to make an empowered choice for motherhood. I am also involved in supporting women who have had abortions and are struggling with the consequences of it. I’ve grown close to many of the women I’ve been able to support over the years, and it breaks my heart to know that so many more go through this every day,” explains Vaughan-Spruce.   

“My faith is a central part of who I am, so sometimes I’ll stand or walk near an abortion facility and pray about this issue. This is something I’ve done pretty much every week for around the last 20 years of my life. I pray for my friends who have experienced abortion, and for the women who are thinking about going through it themselves,” she continued.  

Her arrest follows another recent incident in Bournemouth where a woman was told to leave by local authorities for praying, even outside of the local censorship zone. Find out more.

In Westminster, parliamentarians are considering legislation to introduce censorship zones in England and Wales. Clause 9 of the Public Order Bill, currently under parliamentary debate, would prohibit pro-life volunteers from “influencing”, “advising”, “persuading”, “informing”, “occupying space” or even “expressing opinion” within the vicinity of an abortion facility.  

 Those who breach the rules could face up to two years in prison.  

 A 2018 government review into the work of pro-life volunteers outside of abortion facilities found that instances of harassment are rare, and police already have powers to prosecute individuals engaging in such activities. The most common activities of pro-life groups were found to be quiet or silent prayer, or offering leaflets about charitable support available to women who would like to consider alternative options to abortion.   

At 150m, the national censorship zones would be larger than a football pitch (115m). In the equivalent space, if one goalkeeper were to pray for the other goalkeeper – regardless of impact or noticeability – that would be an offence.

 The censorial provisions of the parliamentary bill drew substantive criticism from members of the House of Lords, including Liberal Democrat Peer Lord Beith, who deemed the clause “the most profound restriction on free speech I have ever seen in any UK legislation.” Lord Farmer called the clause “fundamentally flawed”, and asked, “When one walks past, one sees that vigils are often small groups of harmless, mainly female, pensioners. Why should they be banned and silenced?”  

The Clause has caused great controversy following a statement released from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State shortly after MPs voted to include it, admitting that the clause “could not be said to be compliant” with Convention rights as protected in the European Court of Human Rights.   

Baroness Claire Fox, who advocates for abortion, pointed out that “creating prohibitions on protest on an issue-by-issue basis is not an appropriate way to make law. It sets a precedent that will inevitably lead to attempts to prevent speech, expression, information sharing, assembly or the holding of protected beliefs around other sites or in relation to other controversial or unpopular causes.”

A new cold war unfolds before our eyes

For Americans, this past week should bring into focus an unpleasant reality: The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is engaged in a cold war against us and we are only just beginning to recognize it.  

The revelation that the Chinese Communist Party’s military has been conducting a multi-year campaign to fly surveillance platforms over the United States (and other countries) comes as a shock for many, and some are still in denial. But this is just the latest piece of evidence in a decade-long slide from a hopeful partnership to an outright rivalry with the PRC. The fact that this shift has taken place calls into question our earlier faith that persuasion and reassurance can smooth over any hostility. 

President Biden’s decision to cancel Secretary of State Antony Blicken’s visit to Beijing — what would have been the first Cabinet-level visit to the PRC of his presidency — suggests that at least some within his administration understand the geopolitical realities of this new cold war. 

Unfortunately, this new geopolitical condition is only dimly understood across our society, and this lack of understanding has encouraged many to dismiss these changes as the product of partisan politics or view them through a lazy narrative of “China hawks” versus “engagers.”   

Make no mistake, Beijing is waging a cold war against us, and its leaders would prefer that we remain ignorant of this fact and divided in our response to it. 

To fully grapple with this new cold war, our country will need to examine how we found ourselves in it and debate what we must do to wage it in ways that protect our interests and reinforce our values. That requires responsible leadership from across society and will force us to make difficult trade-offs. Issues as contentious as trade and immigration, entitlement programs and defense spending, monetary and fiscal policies, and scientific research and industrialization must be considered through this new lens. The sooner we recognize this reality, the better positioned we will be to respond appropriately, create some semblance of political consensus, and build a degree of strategic stability. The outcome we should seek is an international system that protects our values and avoids direct military conflict between the United States and China. 

We must reject the fallacy that acknowledging this cold war and waging it responsibly will inevitably lead to Armageddon. Kicking the can down the road or hiding one’s head in the sand (to mix metaphors) is far more dangerous because it compounds the inevitable miscalculations and misperceptions inherent in a rivalry. A cold war is far preferable to the two alternatives, capitulation or a hot war between nuclear powers. 

One of the reasons why Americans — and the citizens of other democracies — find this geopolitical condition so hard to accept relates to typical human nature: This isn’t the outcome we wanted or expected.   

For five decades, leaders from across multiple democracies and various elements of our societies sought to transform the PRC into a partner through economic development and engagement. Due primarily to the ingenuity of the Chinese people, as well as our efforts to assist them, the PRC has become wealthier and more technologically advanced than we could have expected.   

While the “means” of our strategy consisted of economic development and diplomatic engagement, along with an ever-present military hedge, the “ends” of our strategy was the political transformation of the PRC from within — changing it from a brutal authoritarian regime that had been responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of its citizens into something resembling a stable, multi-party political system in which power was shared across constituencies and state power was limited.   

The intent of this strategy was not to make the PRC into a carbon copy of ourselves but to make it soluble within a rules-based international system built upon the liberal concept that there are limits to state power vis-à-vis the individual. It is this concept of the “limited state” that both Beijing and Moscow reject as an existential threat to their leaders’ monopoly hold on power. While the Chinese Communist Party correctly identified our strategy as one of “peaceful evolution,” the best shorthand for this strategy remains a German phrase: “Wandel durch Handel” (change through trade).  

However, Beijing’s political transformation, which was necessary for a lasting partnership based on mutual interests, did not take place. The Chinese Communist Party understood that a political transformation of this sort would result in one clear loser: themselves. We underestimated the party and overestimated our own agency in bringing about the kinds of changes we found desirable. Unsurprisingly, the party took steps to develop a counterstrategy and wage a cold war against us to protect their interests. 

We must stop underestimating the Chinese Communist Party and take seriously the challenge of waging this new cold war.

The Biden administration is on the brink of impeachment proceedings.

On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed it has hired a law firm to aid in responding to the potential GOP House-led impeachment of Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

According to reports from The Hill, the contract, signed with New-York based firm Debevoise & Plimpton, comes a week after a second article of impeachment was filed by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.).

The Suppression of the Society of Jesus

Calendar year 2014 marks 200 years since the Restoration of the Society of Jesus following 41 years of Suppression. Pressured by the royal courts of Portugal, France and Spain, Pope Clement XIV suppressed the Society, causing Jesuits throughout the world to renounce their vows and go into exile. Pope Pius VII, a Benedictine, restored the Society on August 7, 1814.
