The End of China’s“Peaceful Rise”
Two generations of American scholars held out hope that China would become “a responsible stakeholder.” In 2020, those hopes have been dashed.
BY: LARRY DIAMONDJuly 17, 2020
The deteriorating relationship between the world’s two superpowers—the United States and China—is now entering a period of grave danger. An emboldened Chinese Communist Party is now on the move in Asia and globally. Increasingly, its behavior constitutes a threat to peace and security in Asia and the core national interests of the United States. Whether the United States and its allies exhibit the strategy and resolve to meet this threat will be the single most important determinant of world order in the coming decade.
Over social media and through its multi-billion-dollar global propaganda machine, the PRC now spreads the message in multiple languages, 24-7, that democracy is an inferior system of government to China’s efficient dictatorship; that China is a peaceful, selfless, and generous rising power, seeking merely to “help a world in need”; and that the U.S. epitomizes the inability of democracies to cope effectively with the virus—even though the CCP’s negligence helped unleash it on the world.
But the image of “benevolence” and “harmony” that the Chinese Communist Party-State is trying to promote through its overt and covert global media operations is belied by its brutal subjugation of its Uighur Muslim population in Xinjiang—a crime against humanity; by its assault on civil liberties and the rule of law in Hong Kong; by “sharp power” tactics to penetrate, corrupt, and coopt democratic institutions around the world; by its neocolonial exploitation of debt diplomacy and political corruption to swindle developing countries out of their critical infrastructure and natural resources; by the breathtaking pace of its military expansion and modernization, aided by the most audacious, comprehensive and sustained campaign of technology theft in global history; and by its increasing military adventurism and belligerence in Asia, particularly in the South China Sea.
We have arrived at a critical juncture in world history. In 2013, the Financial Times’ David Pilling observed, “Deng Xiaoping was fond of quoting the ancient Chinese proverb ‘Tao guang yang hui’, which is generally rendered: ‘Hide your brightness, bide your time.’”
For two generations of American scholars and policymakers, the hopeful interpretation of this phrase was that China would have a peaceful rise to great-power status, becoming what former Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick termed “a responsible stakeholder” in global affairs. But as Orville Schell, one of America’s premier China watchers, concluded in a recent magisterial survey of nearly half a century of America’s “engagement policy” with China, it “died tragically in 2020 due to neglect.” There were plenty of mistakes on the American side, but the key cause of death was that it no longer served the interests of China’s Communist Party-State, and of its leader, Xi Jinping, the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao.
This is not simply because Xi is a more domestically ruthless and globally ambitious leader than any other of the post-Mao era. It is also because engagement—which, as Schell notes, never delivered equivalence and reciprocity from the Chinese side—had outlived its usefulness.
In his prescient essay seven years ago, Pilling added about Deng’s phrase, “The idea was to keep China’s capabilities secret until the moment was right to reveal them.” Now, Chinese leaders seem to believe that moment has arrived.
Recent developments signal a new authoritarian bravado and belligerence on the part of the PRC. The three most worrisome aspects of this are the betrayal of Beijing’s commitment to Hong Kong’s autonomy; the escalating pace of PRC militarization and muscle-flexing in the South China Sea; and the growing existential challenge to the freedom and security of Asia’s most liberal democracy, Taiwan.
On June 30, the PRC finally lowered the boom on Hong Kong, adopting the draconian national security law that it had announced but not detailed the previous month. The new law gives the government in Beijing carte blanche to arrest anyone in Hong Kong it claims is committing acts of “secession,” “subversion,” “terrorism,” or “collusion with foreign powers.” The language is so broad it can apply to anyone (even abroad) advocating for the civil and political rights of Hong Kongers, as guaranteed both in international charters and in the 1984 Sino-British Declaration.
Procedurally, this delivers the death knell to the rule of law in Hong Kong, since it will be enforced by a secretive committee, dominated by the Beijing authorities, whose decisions “shall not be amenable to judicial review.” And just so the people of Hong Kong do not misjudge what they are up against if they continue to try to exercise what were once their rights of free expression, penalties for violating the law can include life in prison. The day after the law went into effect, 10 Hong Kongers were arrested under its provisions (including a 15-year-old girl), and another 360 were taken into custody as new protests erupted
Fear now stalks what has been one of Asia’s most civically vibrant cities. The police no longer need search warrants to monitor suspects or seize their assets. Activists are deleting their Twitter accounts and writers their posted articles from news sites. Booksellers confess to being “paranoid” that their customers could be government spies. And, the New York Times reports, “A museum that commemorates the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre is rushing to digitize its archives, afraid its artifacts could be seized.”
To be sure, Hong Kong’s brave democrats are not simply bowing in the face of Beijing’s bullying. Over 600,000 people turned out last weekend for a remarkably disciplined and well-staged primary election organized by the pro-democracy camp to choose its candidates for the September Legislative Council elections.
The vote took place in defiance of official warnings that it might violate the new national security law. Protests continue, and pro-democracy activists vow to carry on the struggle at the ballot box and on the streets. But tactics must now be more creative and oblique (blank posters now sometimes stand in place of explicit statements of resistance). A few opposition figures have already left, and as the vise tightens, more people will emigrate.
Beijing’s strategy is to instill fear, demoralize opposition, compel submission, coopt the wavering, and gradually increase repression until Hong Kong’s robust society realizes that resistance is futile. But this is not simply Beijing’s strategy for Hong Kong, it is the means by which it seeks to secure dominance over all of Asia.
Having finally secured (or so they believe) Hong Kong’s submission, China’s communist leaders now look to the South China Sea as their next conquest.
A quick look at the map of China’s “Nine-Dash Line” reveals the absurdity of its claims to sovereignty over 85 percent of these waters—which are rich in fishing and mineral rights, as well as in geopolitical leverage (with an estimated one third of all global shipping passing through).
Most of the Nine-Dash Line veers far from Chinese land deep into the proximity of Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines—as the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague recognized in 2016 when it upheld the case brought by the Philippines against China’s expansive claims. Nevertheless, China has not only spent the last several years militarizing the Sea—in part by creating islands from dredged sand and then converting them into military bases.
As Robert Manning and Patrick Cronin have recently observed, China has also been seeking “to coerce its maritime neighbors to abandon their claims and territorial rights under international law and irrevocably alter the status quo.” Increasingly, China harasses fishing boats from the other four countries (sinking a Vietnamese fishing boat in disputed waters in April), and it threatens oil and gas projects in waters that lie within the exclusive economic zones of Malaysia and Vietnam.
The escalating maritime harassment, Manning and Cronin write, is stoking fears “that China is trying to disrupt and gradually strangle Malaysian and Vietnamese oil and gas operations in the area and erase their territorial claims.”
Although the Obama Administration backed the ruling in the Hague as “final and binding,” a more vigorous American posture is needed. On Monday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo dismissed China’s territorial claims in the region as “completely unlawful,” while two American aircraft carriers sailed with their strike groups into the South China Sea. These are the kinds of actions that are needed—and will be needed more—to deter and contain China’s aggressive intent.
For it is not just Hong Kong and the rich, strategic waters of the South China Sea over which Beijing is determined to extend its dominance. It is also Taiwan, which the PRC leaders have always claimed is a renegade province that must be reunited with the mainland. Every Chinese leader since Mao has vowed to achieve this. But in the post-Deng era of “hiding strength and biding time,” no ruler seriously contemplated using force to resolve the question (absent a grave provocation from Taiwan, such as a declaration of independence).
That may now be changing for three reasons: First, the era of China’s communist leaders “biding their time” on the global stage is over. Now they seek to upend the postwar liberal order, to remake international institutions and norms, and to restructure the balance of power in Asia and beyond. Second, in contrast to his two predecessors, who left power after the limit of their two five-year presidential terms, Xi has done away with term limits and plans to rule for life. Thus, he can no longer pass the Taiwan “problem” on to his successor, while claiming to have inched the PRC’s prospects forward. For his domestic legitimacy, and to realize his ambitions for China’s global rise, he must “recover” Taiwan. And third, Xi may now realize that United Front tactics of penetration, propaganda, corruption, and cooptation will not pluck Taiwan into the lap of the Party. That scenario looks illusory in the wake of the crushing defeat of the KMT’s Beijing-friendly presidential candidate, Han Kuo-yu, in Taiwan’s January 2020 presidential election (and then Han’s ignominious recall by the voters from his position as Mayor of Kaohsiung). The CCP must now sense that no amount of money, misinformation, infiltration or coercion is going to lure Taiwan into the political arms of the CCP—and certainly not after the Party has shown “one country, two systems” to be a grotesque fraud.
For these reasons, the coming years will present the greatest challenge to peace and security in Asia since the Vietnam War. Indeed, a more sobering historical analogy may be more warranted.
In their important and insightful new Foreign Affairs essay asking, “Is Taiwan the next Hong Kong?” two former NSC Senior Directors for Asia, Michael Green and Evan Medeiros (who served, respectively, Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama), warn of the danger of “creeping irredentism.” When “Putin decided to invade Ukraine and annex Crimea in 2014, he was drawing on lessons from his 2008 invasion of Georgia.” The lack of a decisive Western response to the latter “created a permissive environment for the former.” China’s leaders, they warn, will weigh the U.S. response on Hong Kong when they consider “future aggression in Asia.” Already, they have begun dropping the “peaceful” part of “peaceful unification” in some of their public speeches about the future of Taiwan.
There is an even darker historical parallel: Hitler’s seizure of the whole of Czechoslovakia, obliterating the September 1938 Munich Agreement like Xi negated the Sino-British Joint Declaration promising Hong Kong autonomy through 2047.
One of America’s most respected China scholars recently told me, “I look at Hong Kong now as Czechoslovakia, and an assault on Taiwan would be the equivalent of Hitler’s invasion of Poland.”
Wishful thinkers thought Hitler would be satisfied with part of Czechoslovakia (the Sudetenland). And then the whole thing. But then he invaded Poland, and the rest was the history of the most destructive war in human history.
There is a reason why the Munich Agreement has ever since been synonymous with international appeasement and blunder. There is no more important historical lesson than the folly of appeasing an authoritarian aggressor.
This is what is at stake now in East Asia. That is why it so important for the United States to stand resolute in support of Hong Kong’s autonomy and democratic rights; why we must impose serious sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong leaders who are responsible for the assault on those rights; why we must work with our allies throughout the Indo-Pacific region to counter Chinese bullying and intimidation and ensure open sea lanes and peaceful resolution of disputes; and why we must leave no doubt in the minds of China’s leaders that we will, in the words of John F. Kennedy, “pay any price” and “bear any burden . . . in order to assure the survival and success of liberty” in this vitally important part of the globe.

PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOUR ENEMIES, OUR ENEMIES, WILL DO ANYTHING TO KEEP THE COUNTRY SHUT DOWN UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTION CONFIDENT THAT DOING SO WILL COST YOU THE ELECTION. DO NOT LET THEM SUCCEED. FIRE FAUCI AND HIS ALLIES. CONTINUE TO OPEN UP THE COUNTRY.

Dispatches from the War: Mr. Trump, the enemy is deep inside the gate(To read about Jon’s mega-collection, The Matrix Revealedclick here.)Note to the reader: As I stated on Monday, don’t blithely assume the economy is reopening and things will continue to improve.  The nation is under the control of public health traitors.  They can declare “new waves” of cases.  They can invent pretexts at the drop of a hat, and governors and mayors can declare lockdowns again.  This is not over.  The economic war against the people is being waged to destroy America.

Mr. President, don’t imagine that simply “minimizing” the presence of Tony Fauci (your current plan) will significantly degrade his influence.  The governors and mayors will still listen to him and follow his advice.  Take him completely off the board as a member of the coronavirus task force.  It’s not enough to say you disagree with him.  Put him out to pasture.  You don’t realize just how dangerous he is.

Do not believe any of his declarations of “science.”  They are, in fact, weapons of sabotage.

Earlier this week, I proposed that you send in troops (or the FBI) to the states and cities, with a wartime mandate to force open the whole American economy…

Once and for all…

Preventing state and city officials from continuing any form of lockdown or restraint on the LIBERTY of the people…

Because this IS war, and the enemy IS in charge right now.  You certainly aren’t.

I’m sure you have a few bright people working for you, people who aren’t secretly spying on you or operating on behalf of Big Globalism.  Bring those people into a room and tell them you are open to suggestions and operations that do not include sending in the troops.

Listen to what they have to say.  Carefully.  Do any of their ideas amount to effective solutions?  I’m not talking about cosmetic actions that make you look good.  I’m not talking about flailing in the face of the enemy.  I’m talking about wartime plans that stand a good chance of succeeding.  Do these people have anything at all to offer?

Come clean, in public, about the disastrous effects of the lockdowns on the economy and human life.  Don’t hold back.  The people must know how heavy the costs of the war are.

Political journalist Elias Marat reports: “…nearly one-third [of] U.S. households – representing 32 percent – have still not made their full housing payments for the month of July, according to a survey from online rental platform Apartment List.”

“And with public health experts warning people to continue to ‘Stay at Home,’ the slogan is taking on a perverse new meaning as humanitarian disaster looms for some 28 million people in the U.S. who are facing eviction and homelessness in the immediate future.”

This is the true face of the war, Mr. Trump, and no amount of empty rhetoric can defuse the catastrophe.

The COVID case-counting fraud, a scandal of enormous proportions, is inflating numbers to sustain lockdowns, work stoppages, unemployment, business bankruptcies—the whole vicious assault against the very survival of Americans.

Are you willing to turn your back and walk away from this?

Are you willing to let public health officials destroy the country with their insane fear porn about a germ; about what amounts to a flu season?

Fauci is leading that pack.  He is playing a deranged tune that is sending the nation over a cliff.

Are you in a trance, Mr. President?

Can’t you put yourself together and see what is actually going on?  And then ACT ON IT?

This whole COVID operation is far from an accident.  The plan is economic warfare.  That was the intent all along.  The hyped-up STORY about a germ was and is the means to implement the plan.

Many credentialed doctors and scientists have exposed the vastly overblown story.  They’ve been trying to reach out to you, but the news networks and other traitors are blocking them.

You’re in a bubble.

This SENSELESS war is breaking apart loved ones from loved ones.  Can you understand what that means?

If tomorrow, all the people took off all their masks, and all the people stopped walking six feet apart, and all the people said no to testing and tracing, and everything that was closed suddenly opened…nothing harmful would happen.  This would be another flu year.  Just as you supposed at the beginning.

You know that.  Yet, knowing it, are you going to stand aside and let this country go down into chaos?

Are you?

Every person, at some point, thinks about his own courage.  How far would he go, what pain would he endure to stand by his deepest values and principles?

This is your time.

Now.

What are you going to do?

There is a train stalled on the tracks.  The engine is shut down.  Men are standing around the locomotive.  In the cabin, the engineer is terrified.  The men have told him that if he turns on the engine, the whole train could explode.

You’re standing on a hill overlooking the train.  You’re the General.  Your Army is behind you.

What do you do?

You send your Army down to move the men out of the way.  One of your men walks into the cabin, brushes the engineer aside and turns on the engine.

The engineer recovers.

The train moves again.

WHAT IS MOST BEAUTIFUL HAS BEEN HIDDEN OUT OF THE SIGHT OF MEN, AND WHAT IS MOST HIDEOUS HAS BEEN TAKEN FROM THE DARKNESS AND DRESSED UP AND INTRODUCED AS BEAUTY

“What is most beautiful has been hidden out of the sight of men, and what is most hideous has been taken from the darkness and dressed up and introduced as beauty.  And men who have been taught to seek beauty, for therein is found truth, are confused for they see not beauty in this thing that has come out disguised, for still it is hideous, and this, men cannot ignore.

But the men who have been called by God to hold fast the standard of beauty have rewritten the standard so that men might look upon what is hideous and deem it beautiful and deserving of the light, and look upon what is beautiful and deem it ugly and fit only for the dark.

The Blessed Mother has seen that this is the way of men, and that again and again those who were to guard this standard have attempted to distort rather than protect.  But oh look upon the Blessed Mother, for she is indeed beautiful by any standard.  And no standard can be found by which she is not beautiful.  And in her beauty she points men always to truth, for what she holds up to the world is the truth of her Son, and by this standard all things are reflected in the light of her beauty, and the true standard of beauty is restored.

The Blessed Mother comes again and again when men have become confused, and she brings words of clarity that are to be unfolded at the time she requests.  But the words are heeded not.  Or they are brought forth in increments, while much is hidden away, because evil men wish not for the world to behold the beauty in the words.

The Blessed Mother brought words for this time, a time when the standard of beauty is so distorted that men look upon hideous things and declare them beautiful.  And they see not that these things have been dressed up to hide their ugliness, so that they might be proclaimed beautiful, while that which is beautiful is tucked away, and men, catching a glimpse, proclaim it unfit for the light.

She who is beauty itself, asked that in 1960 a secret be revealed, words that she had spoken to a child, for these were words that would bring to light how men would attempt to change the standard.  For this standard of beauty flowed forth from the deposit of faith, and the attempt to change it obscured what was being steadily attacked in an effort to leave the deposit empty.  But this cannot be destroyed for this deposit has the protection of the King and His holy angels.

It was the express desire of the Blessed Mother to have this revealed so that when so-called holy men presented what was dark and hidden as beautiful and deserving of light, then men would say, “No, this is that of which our Mother warned.  See how all that is happening is contained in her words.”  And they would refuse to see what was dark as light.

So now have men brought upon themselves great chastisements because they had not the words to combat the evil thrust upon them.  Those who held the words will bear the sorrow of knowing they have not carried out what their Mother has requested, but other men bear the responsibility of not demanding that holy men remain holy, and of accepting that the very things that change not should be changed.

But the Lord has shown mercy again and again.  And He has sent His Mother again and again to give a warning unto the world.  But the world listened not to even that which was revealed, and sought not that which had been hidden.  Now has come upon the world the great and terrible day of the Lord.  But still these words must be shown, for the men in holy places proclaim that what is beautiful is ugly, and what is ugly is beautiful, and therein attack the deposit of faith.  But these words will be unfolded, and then there will be no mistaking what is beautiful, and what is dirty and hidden and not befitting being paraded in the light of day.

Pray without ceasing, for now is the time for secrets to be revealed.”

IT IS UNFOTUNATELY TRUE THAT GENERALLY OUR FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING TURN OUT MORE DEMOCRATS/LIBERAL VOTERS THAN YOU COULD POSSIBLY GUESS.

Democrats Using Trump Hatred to Seduce the Educated and Affluent into Supporting Class SuicideBy Steve McCannAmerican ThinkerJuly 15, 2020
In the 2018 midterm elections the Democrats reclaimed the House of Representatives, ushering in Nancy Pelosi as Speaker. This transfer of control eventuated not only in the de facto takeover of the House by the radical arm of the Party, but the callous disregard of any potential long-term damage to the nation as Pelosi and company left no stone unturned to either impeach Donald Trump or irrevocably marginalize his presidency, as well as malign those that voted for him.   One myopic and narcissistic voter demographic group was primarily responsible for this outcome in 2018 and they are poised to permanently empower the Marxist/socialists in the 2020 election.
In the 2018 election college graduates accounted for 43% of all voters as surveyed in exit polls. Overall 56% voted Democrat and 42% Republican. White college graduates, who accounted for nearly 80% of the college vote, voted 52% Democrat versus 47% Republican. While 53% of white male college graduates voted Republican, 60% of their white female counterparts voted for the Democrats and Nancy Pelosi. This was a large enough margin to flip numerous suburban House seats into the Democrat column. By comparison, in 2016 only 51% of white female college graduates voted for Hillary Clinton.
These same exit polls reveal that the primary motivation of the anti-Trump college educated vote, in particular the female vote, was not policy oriented but the belief that Donald Trump was not honest or trustworthy, that he was lacking any ethics and devoid of the right temperament to be president.
These social elites had fully embraced the incessant drumbeat of the faux Russian collusion and never-ending and often fabricated character assassination. In their insulated world where they isolate themselves socially, live pretentiously and are concerned with appearances and being part of the in-crowd (which is irreversibly anti-Trump), bothering to inform themselves or speak out about the Democratic Party agenda could potentially cause them to lose their status.
This same stratagem is being repeated again in 2020. The Democrats are once more pulling out all the stops to the hoodwink this voting bloc by having them again focus on the shiny object in the distance instead of their nominee, Joe Biden, and their Marxist/socialist agenda drafted by Bernie Sanders and his merry band of revolutionaries.
The shiny object: Donald Trump’s supposed incompetence, lack of character, civility and sophistication as well as his ill-mannered reliance on social media. To further cement this portrait the constant repetition of any fabrication, fake news or fallacious accusation is permissible, and necessary, in order to rid the nation of the worst reprobate in American history.
Meanwhile as the mainstream media is successfully manipulating potential voters to be single-mindedly focused on Trump, the party hierarchy is feverishly formulating the execution of their plans for:
The abolishment of the suburbs.  Which would be accomplished by forcing an end to single-family zoning and housing as well as the indiscriminate building of low-income housing wherever the federal government chooses. Thus, the federal takeover, transformation and urbanization of the suburbs.
The abolition of cash bail nationwide. As part of their plans to further hamstring and defund the police as well as dramatically reduce the prison population, the Democrats want to eliminate cash bail and immediately release back onto the streets all accused of a crime. A program that has been a disaster in New York and other Democrat run cities.
A determination to achieve carbon free electricity generation nationwide within 15 years by installing 500 million solar panels ($2 Trillion) and underwriting community solar energy systems throughout the country ($2 Trillion). As well as the rejoining and abiding by the unattainable and exorbitantly expensive objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement, regardless of the potentially catastrophic economic and social disruption to the nation.
The Democrats are committed to granting citizenship for 11 – 22 million illegal immigrants, expanding sanctuary centers, dramatically limiting the ability of ICE to deport criminal aliens and increasing legal immigration.
Biden and the Democrats are all in on nationwide voting by mail and not just in 2020 but permanently.
The Democrats are planning on implementing the largest increase in personal and corporate taxes in history as well as a new carbon tax on all Americans.
Because of Biden’s incestuous relationship with China, the Chinese will no longer be hindered in what will certainly be a triumphant crusade for global hegemony. They will also return to being the unquestioned supplier of choice to a penitent United States.  More important than these radical policy issues, is the reality that once the Democrat party establishment allied themselves with the Marxists masquerading as “Democratic Socialists” and became willing apologists for their twin militant arms Antifa and Black Lives Matter, they lost all leverage.
The Party, if it wins in 2020, will be incapable of thwarting the inevitable extreme ultimatums and policy demands of the radical left as the party leaders will cower and surrender in the face of any threat of orchestrated violence and aggression.
The irony in the litany of proposals and policy pronouncements by Biden and the Democrats is that virtually each and every one will have an extraordinarily disparate impact on the college educated, suburban dwelling, upper middle-class voting bloc. Additionally, if the Democrats gain control of the White House and Congress, it is not just the fundamental transformation of the country that is the ultimate objective of the Marxists/socialists, but the absolute marginalization of this same faction because of their current influence, wealth and lifestyle.
This nation’s foremost living economist and philosopher, Thomas Sowell, recently opined that if Biden and the radical left win the 2020 election that event could well be the point of no return for the United States. The ultimate decision as to the future of the country will, in all likelihood, be in the hands of the self-absorbed college educated, suburban dwelling voters come November 3, 2020.
Some unsolicited advice for these voters and the American citizenry from someone who has been there.  I can attest that when a nation goes past the point of no return there is but one road back and it is strewn with corpses and cities in unfathomable ruin.

THE DEMOCRATS OWN THE PANDEMIC

A Pandemic of Democrat ProportionsBy Michael J. MuellerJuly 16, 2020(emphasis added)
The most virulent scourge affecting the United States today is not the Wuhan coronavirus; rather, it’s the politicization of the pandemic by leftist Democrats to remove a duly elected President.
History has never witnessed a more concerted effort to negate the will of the American electorate. Donald J. Trump has endured this unprecedented onslaught of vitriol, hate, and falsehoods perpetrated by leftist Democrat politicians, mainstream propagandists, and liberal progressives.
Consequently, the government has been at a virtual standstill as Democrats inflict one manufactured crisis after another on the American people with the goal of removing the President.
Case in point, the U.S. response to the Wuhan coronavirus has been gratuitously overblown. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the current infection fatality rate for the virus is less than 0.26%
The inordinate response to the virus resulted in the contraction of a once robust economy by 5% during the first quarter of 2020 thus ending the longest period of economic expansion in our nation’s history. An unemployment rate under 4%, the best in half a century, jumped to over 13% in a matter of weeks. Six months after the first U.S. case of coronavirus was identified in Washington state, the country still languishes in a state of limbo between opening the economy and keeping the economy shut down.
This irrational response to a virus lethal to only a small segment of Americans, was meticulously orchestrated.
In August 2019, Democrats first realized their best hope of beating Donald Trump in 2020 was a recession. Not just an economic downturn; but, a full-fledged, violent contraction of the mighty U.S. economy with all of its commensurate baggage including massive unemployment. Democrats understood Americans could not be compelled to vote for a party bereft of tangible ideas unless the country was suffering. Numerous liberal media outlets quickly chimed in with opinion pieces supporting this hypothesis including the Washington PostNew York TimesThe Atlantic, the Boston GlobeThe Hill and CNBC.
Still in the midst of a pointless impeachment of the President, Democrats had already concluded the coronavirus was “on deck” to become the next national “crisis.” After all, the Ukraine debacle immediately replaced the Russia hoax when Robert Mueller couldn’t come up with any dirt. Luckily for Democrats, the Wuhan coronavirus showed promise as the best vehicle to quickly undo three years of economic progress under Donald Trump.
After a partisan House vote to impeach the President took place on December 18, 2019, Speaker Nancy Pelosi did something strange. She delayed sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate for nearly a month, citing fears the Senate would not conduct a fair trial. Coincidently, during the delay, the coronavirus spread outside China and begin to infect people worldwide.
The first Chinese case of coronavirus was reported in Wuhan on December 1, 2019 fully two weeks before the impeachment vote. Two days after the virus was detected outside China and four days before the first confirmed U.S. case, Pelosi turned impeachment articles over to the Senate. Without enough Democrat votes in the Senate to convict Trump of the ludicrous charges dreamt up by Jerry Nadler and his cronies, Pelosi had positioned the Democrat party to begin the next phase (and there’s always a next phase) to remove the President after his anticipated acquittal.
As the coronavirus began to infect Americans, the President was advised to curtail economic activity on a nationwide level by medical “experts” who, to this day, still peddle fear and uncertainty. The Democrat machine kicked-into action to ensure the shutdown would be long, excruciating, difficult and Trump’s fault. Without a thought for their constituents, Democrat politicians at the local, state, and national level, used fear to keep the country from moving past the crisis.
Never have so few done so much to debilitate so many Americans. The medical “experts” issued frequent contradictory and increasingly draconian guidelines adding to the prevailing fear. Don’t wear a mask. Wear a mask. Go to the grocery store; but, don’t go to church. Protest, riot, loot, shoot, burn and run rampant through the streets of cities; but, don’t go to school. No swimming, fishing, commuting, traveling, working, eating out, going to bars, partying or sunbathing until a vaccine is developed. Stay in your homes. Socially distance. Eat “contact free” pizza and tacos. Be together alone. Don’t pay your bills. Go bankrupt. Do your part because we’re all in this together!
When several states decided enough was enough and began to re-open businesses, an increase in testing identified numerous asymptomatic coronavirus infections and people with antigens. While the number of infections increased, deaths and hospitalizations did not return to previous highs. Democrats, once again, lambasted those governors who had the audacity to re-open prior to the November election calling them reckless, callous, selfish and greedy. Bending to the caterwauling, some governors reinstituted mitigation measures.
But the increase in infections highlighted “an inconvenient truth” — the more infections identified, the lower the infection fatality rate. This fact was buried by the propagandists in the media for failing to progress their narrative of fear.
According to the latest CDC statistics, 1 in 107 Americans have contracted coronavirus. That statistic is misleading since up to 75% of individuals infected with the virus are asymptomatic. The number of Americans infected with coronavirus is likely much higher than reported since people without symptoms typically don’t get tested. Statistics also indicate approximately 1 in 2,500 Americans died due to coronavirus complications. Yet, when variables such as age, sex, medical conditions and commitment to social distancing are factored into the equation, the odds of death by coronavirus are significantly reduced. For example, if you are under the age of 25, your odds of being infected and dying of coronavirus are 1 in 1.8 million.
In response to the infection uptick, many local governments mandated the wearing of masks in public despite knowing that no face mask can completely filter out all coronavirus virions, which range in size from 0.06 to 0.14 microns in diameter. One study concluded cotton face coverings block only 28% of particles, surgical masks capture 80%, and a fit-tested N95 mask can block up to 99.7% of particles. If the goal is to protect the public from coronavirus infection, wouldn’t mandating the wearing of N95 masks in public be more effective? Of course, it would; but, N95 masks are reserved for healthcare professionals.
Though only partially effective, the wearing of face masks makes an unknowing populace feel safer. Government must be seen to be doing something even if those actions are only partially effective.
The President has his back against the wall enduring “death by a thousand cuts” as Democrat lies, misinformation and fear-mongering continue to influence the electorate.
When coronavirus infections diminish as expected in the coming months, Democrats will, once again, pull out their knives to make the next cut — probably another impeachment.
As we get closer to the November election, these new crises will undoubtedly make coronavirus and the violent riots against “systemic racism” pale in comparison.

THE SYLLABUS OF ERRORS OF POPE BLESSED PIUS IX HAS RELEVANCE TO OUR PRESENT SITUATION IN THE CHURCH

CancelChurch, Meet Pope Blessed Pius IXby WhispersofRestoration

For the next uptick of CancelChurch, when many WOR readers will doubtless find themselves further deprived of Mass and the Sacraments and mired in Covid-conversations of various stripes, one might find oneself inclined to begin responding exclusively with quotes from Pope Blessed Pius IX’s Syllabus Errorum. For a bit of edifying fun, then…

Expulsion of the Russian envoy to the Holy See by Pius IX (Brydak, c. 1865)“All this about public worship being chiefly about the order of justice, about the divine rights of Christ in his sanctuary, etc., is just pious nonsense. Or rather, it’s reckless endangerment, putting society at risk during public health crises!”CONDEMNED ERROR: “The teaching of the Catholic Church is hostile to the wellbeing and interests of society.” (Syllabus, n. 40)“The State has authority to declare public worship ‘non-essential’ when it comes to regulating public health, and boo-hoo if it interferes with your devotional life!” CONDEMNED ERROR: “The civil government, even when in the hands of an infidel sovereign, has a right to an indirect negative power over religious affairs.” (n. 41)“It’s a situation of ‘conflicting goods,’ and if the government says we need to take health protection measures, then as a good citizens every Catholic must obey. Even bishops must render unto Caesar!”CONDEMNED ERROR: “In the case of conflicting laws enacted by the two powers, the civil law prevails.” (n. 42)“Unlike good ol’ Fr. Tommy, some priests have been instructing their flocks to resist unreasonable shutdown measures! They’re even keeping churches open, publicly inviting people to continued Masses in defiance of their bishops, not requiring occupancy limits or contact tracing… These men should be fined or jailed!”CONDEMNED ERROR: “The civil authority may interfere in matters relating to religion, morality and spiritual government: hence, it can pass judgment on the instructions issued for the guidance of consciences, conformably with their mission, by the pastors of the Church.”  (n. 44)“When it comes to health regulations during Mass, the State has every right to require mask-wearing, hand sanitizer, gloves and Communion baggies, distance for pew-sitting, occupancy limits in churches, the works! And those priests had better not come into nursing homes for Last Rites… they’re unclean!”CONDEMNED ERROR: “…[The civil authority] has the right to make enactments regarding the administration of the divine sacraments, and the dispositions necessary for receiving them.” (n. 44)“Catholic schools should be taking more safety measures! None of this teaching the primacy of spiritual goods, and they’d better have masks and gloves and whatever else the health experts mandate. And they’d better teach their students to fear sickness and global warming!”CONDEMNED ERROR: “The best theory of civil society requires that popular schools open to children of every class of the people, and, generally, all public institutes intended for instruction in letters and philosophical sciences and for carrying on the education of youth, should be freed from all ecclesiastical authority, control and interference, and should be fully subjected to the civil and political power at the pleasure of the rulers, and according to the standard of the prevalent opinions of the age.” (n. 47)Golly, it’s almost as if Pope Bl. Pius IX regarded the rights of the Church as supreme, and this Church as a divine and indestructible society of whom he was the earthly monarch and his bishops princes, wielding divine power and before whom earthly authorities must bow, ever remaining in their proper sphere of action. Give me that old time religion.More from the same document:…[I]n America… for the last few years, a ferocious war on the Church, its institutions and the rights of the Apostolic See has been raging. …But anyone who knows the nature, desires, and intentions of the sects, whether they be called masonic or bear another name, and compares them with the nature, the systems, and the vastness of the obstacles by which the Church has been assailed almost everywhere, cannot doubt that the present misfortune must mainly be imputed to the frauds and machinations of these sects. It is from them that the synagogue of Satan, which gathers its troops against the Church of Christ, takes its strength….Since the throng of its propagandists has grown enormously, these wicked groups think that they have already become masters of the world and that they have almost reached their pre-established goal. Having sometimes obtained what they desired, and that is power, in several countries, they boldly turn the help of powers and authorities which they have secured to trying to submit the Church of God to the most cruel servitude, to undermine the foundations on which it rests, to contaminate its splendid qualities; and, moreover, to strike it with frequent blows, to shake it, to overthrow it, and, if possible, to make it disappear completely from the earth….[T]he scorn of episcopal dignity, the violation of the liberty and the rights of the Church… demand that We, owing to the Apostolic office with which God has entrusted us in spite of Our insufficient merit, protest against laws which have produced such great evils and make one fear even greater ones; and as far as we are able to do so with the sacred authority of divine law, We vindicate for the Church the freedom which has been trodden underfoot with sacrilegious violence. That is why by this letter we intend to do Our duty by announcing openly to all those whom this matter concerns and to the whole Catholic world, that these laws are null and void because they are absolutely contrary to the divine constitution of the Church.”pius-9-pope-pius-ixPius IX is not impressed. So What?Read the full text here. Maybe send it to your pastor and your bishop. And then ask the “traditional” Catholic priest nearest you: “Father, do you forswear the errors in the Syllabus? If so, then why did you cancel Mass?”Virtuous non-compliance with unjust orders, civil or ecclesiastical, is a good thing. A necessary thing. A Catholic thing. And it’s the only righteous way forward.Go read some Jägerstätter, or watch the film. Remember his bishop? And bravo the restoration!WhispersofRestoration | July 16, 2020 at 2:11 pm | Tags: CultureHistoryLiturgyRestorationSacraments | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: https://wp.me/p8Ne6x-3Z2

IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL IS LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SWAMP, PRESIDENT TRUMP NEEDS TO FOCUS ON DRAIN THE CENTER OF THE SWAMP BEFORE MANY MORE AMERICANS DIE

Dispatches from the War: Mr. Trump, deliver a knockout blow to the traitorous CDC(To read about Jon’s mega-collection, The Matrix Revealedclick here.)“…against all enemies, foreign and domestic…”

Let’s get domestic.

I promise you, Mr. President, if you send a hundred FBI agents into the CDC and remove millions of their files as evidence, you’ll discover this federal agency is entirely corrupt, and has been for decades.

While the Department of Justice prepares indictments, make a public declaration that your administration will ignore all their COVID case numbers and recommendations.  They’re criminal liars.  That’s their whole game.

Let me help you out with four examples.  Face it, you’re not good with details, so you may want a team to summarize the following revelations for you.

ONE: The Atlantic, May 21, 2020, has a story, headlined, “How could the CDC make that mistake?”

I’ll give you the key quotes, and then comment on the stark inference The Atlantic somehow failed to grasp.

“We’ve learned that the CDC is making, at best, a debilitating mistake: combining test results that diagnose current coronavirus infections with test results that measure whether someone has ever had the virus…The agency confirmed to The Atlantic on Wednesday that it is mixing the results of viral [PCR] and antibody tests, even though the two tests reveal different information and are used for different reasons.”

“Several states—including Pennsylvania, the site of one of the country’s largest outbreaks, as well as Texas, Georgia, and Vermont—are blending the data in the same way. Virginia likewise mixed viral and antibody test results until last week, but it reversed course and the governor apologized for the practice after it was covered by the Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Atlantic. Maine similarly separated its data on Wednesday; Vermont authorities claimed they didn’t even know they were doing this.”

“‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’ Ashish Jha, the K. T. Li Professor of Global Health at Harvard and the director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, told us when we described what the CDC was doing. ‘How could the CDC make that mistake? This is a mess’.”

“The CDC stopped publishing anything resembling a complete database of daily [COVID] test results on February 29. When it resumed publishing test data last week [the middle of May]…”

First of all, notice the CDC stopped reporting complete case numbers on a daily basis, for two and a half months.  Remember that.  I’ll cover a more egregious CDC stoppage in a minute.

But here is the main event: The Atlantic fails to mention the true outcome of this “test-combining mistake” at the CDC—which, in fact, is a purposeful maneuver.

Only the PCR should be used for case-counting (according to the conventional experts).

You take those two types of tests, the antibody and the PCR…put them together, add up those results which suggest COVID in any relevant or irrelevant way, and voila, you have inflated case numbers.  Which is exactly what the CDC wants.  They’re in the business of raising false alarms and promoting epidemics.  That’s called a crime.

TWO: In August of 2014, a long-time researcher at the CDC, William Thompson, publicly admitted that he and his co-authors intentionally lied in their study of the MMR vaccine.

They concluded the vaccine did not raise the risk of autism.  But they knew this was a fabrication.  Their data (which they threw out in the trash) pointed to an increased risk of autism in very young African American children.

Thompson refused to speak with the press, after he published his confession on his attorney Rick Morgan’s website.  Thompson said he would testify at a Congressional hearing.  Despite efforts, a hearing never materialized.  Thompson remained silent, and the CDC reassigned him to another unit.

No one at the CDC has been prosecuted for this crime.

THREE: In the fall of 2009, during the so-called Swine Flu epidemic, CBS investigative reporter, Sharyl Attkisson, discovered the CDC had secretly stopped counting cases in the US.

Yet, the agency was claiming tens of thousands of Americans had the epidemic disease.

She found out why the CDC had gone dark.  Here is an excerpt from an interview I did with Attkisson:

Rappoport: “In 2009, you spearheaded coverage of the so-called Swine Flu pandemic. You discovered that, in the summer of 2009, the Centers for Disease Control, ignoring their federal mandate, [secretly] stopped counting Swine Flu cases in America. Yet they continued to stir up fear about the ‘pandemic,’ without having any real measure of its impact. Wasn’t that another investigation of yours that was shut down? Wasn’t there more to find out?”

Attkisson: “The implications of the story were even worse than that. We discovered through our FOI efforts that before the CDC mysteriously stopped counting Swine Flu cases, they had learned that almost none of the cases they had counted as Swine Flu was, in fact, Swine Flu or any sort of flu at all! The interest in the story from one [CBS] executive was very enthusiastic. He said it was ‘the most original story’ he’d seen on the whole Swine Flu epidemic. But others pushed to stop it [after it was published on the CBS News website] and, in the end, no [CBS television news] broadcast wanted to touch it. We aired numerous stories pumping up the idea of an epidemic, but not the one that would shed original, new light on all the hype. It was fair, accurate, legally approved and a heck of a story. With the CDC keeping the true Swine Flu stats secret, it meant that many in the public took and gave their children an experimental vaccine that may not have been necessary.”

Total CDC fakery.  Turning a Nothing into a “pandemic” and selling it.  Needless to say, that is a crime.

But it isn’t end of the story.

The CDC wanted to commit another crime.  About three weeks after Attkisson’s findings were published on the CBS News website, the CDC, obviously in a panic, decided to double down.  If one lie is exposed, tell an even bigger one.  A much bigger one.

Here, from a November 12, 2009, WebMD article is the CDC’s response: “Shockingly, 14 million to 34 million U.S. residents – the CDC’s best guess is 22 million – came down with H1N1 swine flu by Oct. 17 [2009].” (“22 million cases of Swine Flu in US,” by Daniel J. DeNoon).

Are your eyeballs popping, Mr. Trump?  They should be.

What about the Swine Flu vaccine people took in 2009, to prevent the non-existent disease?  Robert Kennedy, Jr. has made some pointed remarks on the subject.  You remember Robert, don’t you, Mr. President?  Early on in your term, you met with him and discussed the subject of dangerous vaccinations.  Notice, in this quote, Kennedy mentions your chief COVID liar, Tony Fauci:

“For example, [Dr. Anthony] Fauci once shilled for the fast-tracked H1N1 influenza (‘swine flu’) vaccine on YouTube, reassuring viewers in 2009 that serious adverse events were ‘very, very, very rare.’ Shortly thereafter, the vaccine went on to wreak havoc in multiple countries, increasing miscarriage risks in pregnant women in the U.S., provoking a spike in adolescent narcolepsy in Scandinavia and causing febrile convulsions in one in every 110 vaccinated children in Australia—prompting the latter to suspend its influenza vaccination program in under-fives.”

FOUR: In 2003, there was a declared SARS global epidemic.  I mention it to give you a flavor of CDC reportage.

On a current CDC website page, we find this: “Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus, called SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV). SARS was first reported in Asia in February 2003. Over the next few months, the illness spread to more than two dozen countries in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia before the SARS global outbreak of 2003 was contained.”

From reading that paragraph, you would think this was quite a dangerous and serious event.  But scrolling down further on the very same CDC page, we come to this: “According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a total of 8,098 people worldwide became sick with SARS during the 2003 outbreak. Of these, 774 died. In the United States, only eight people had laboratory evidence of SARS-CoV infection.”

Clever devils, these CDC people, aren’t they?

I assure you, Mr. Trump, the four examples I’ve cited are only a particle of a sliver of a tip of the scandal.  The CDC has been operating as a criminal agency inside the United States for a very long time.

Sending in the FBI to seize records, indicting and prosecuting hundreds, at the very least, of their employees and top executives, and cutting the agency off from any input whatsoever concerning COVID, would mark a tremendous service to the nation.

The economic war against the American people is backed up and justified by massively fraudulent data and fake science.  A MAJOR source of that data-cascade emanates like putrid swamp water from the CDC.

McCARRICK ON BERGOLIO’S ELECTION: “WE DID IT!”

New post on Roma Locuta EstMcCarrick on Bergoglio’s Election: “We did it!”by Steven O’ReillyJuly 15, 2020 (Steven O’Reilly) – Once again, we return to the case of McCarrick and the “influential Italian gentlemen.” This article will provide Roma Locuta Est‘s most important update to the story. I will not re-summarize here the whole history of McCarrick and his ‘mysterious’ visitor in early March 2013. By this point, if you are a denizen of this blog, you are familiar with story of the “influential Italian gentleman” and are probably up to speed on the latest—until now.  If the topic is new to you, you can review the former articles on this topic and the 2013 conclave:The “Influential Italian Gentleman” (June 25, 2019) Questions Regarding the “Influential Italian Gentleman” (June 28, 2019)2013 Conclave: Was there a violation of Universi Dominici Gregis 12? (July 31, 2019)The 7th Anniversary of McCarrick’s “Influential Italian Gentleman” (March 5, 2020)The Influential Italian Gentleman: McCarrick “touted the praises” of Bergoglio Prior to the Conclave (June 30, 2020)The “Influential Italian Gentleman”: A Sant’Egidio Connection? (July 15, 2020)Before providing the latest bit of information, I’d like to say a word as to why we continue to follow and investigate the story. The tale of the “influential Italian gentleman” — along with the related “St. Gallen mafia” story — certainly appear, on the surface at least, to involve potential violations of various provisions of Universi Dominici Gregis. Whether these potential violations would, even if proven true, invalidate a conclave is above my pay grade. I am not a canonist. However, I do recall Patrick Coffin’s interview of Cardinal Burke in August 2019. The interview touched upon the various concerns surrounding the 2013 conclave involving the activities of the “St. Gallen mafia” and of McCarrick’s “influential Italian gentleman”(see here). During the Coffin interview, Cardinal Burke agreed the McCarrick incident was suspicious. While the cardinal underlined the need for “concrete proofs,” he did wonder whether it was even possible  anyone could demonstrate such proofs. I don’t want to put words in Cardinal Burke’s mouth, but it did not appear he shut the door to ‘something’ being done, provided the right evidence is produced. We have always believed here at Roma Locuta Est, particularly with regard to the McCarrick story, that there are folks out there with bits and pieces of this puzzle–even if they do not realize what they have. They may be in Rome. They may be in Buenos Aires. They may be elsewhere. Roma Locuta Est has continued to investigate, for example, recently identifying a contemporary witness who affirmed that McCarrick did indeed ‘talk up Bergoglio‘ before the 2013 conclave (see The Influential Italian Gentleman: McCarrick “touted the praises” of Bergoglio Prior to the Conclave). We continue to investigate because it is an interesting and curious story. As a former intelligence officer, I find such stories fascinating–indeed they are an exciting challenge to take on, and potentially solve. In fact, Roma Locuta Est has two individuals on our “staff” with US intelligence community background who are working this case and evaluating the evidence. What it ultimately means, I can’t say. If nothing else, we and others might be able to contribute a couple bits of information to the historical record with regard to some of the pre-conclave maneuvers. Certainly that, but there is also the long-shot possibility that some of the facts already and or yet uncovered, taken individually or collectively, might some day be deemed worthy of further investigation by Church authorities, i.e., Cardinal Burke’s “concrete proofs.”Roma Locuta Est has a standing request for priests, bishops, and or cardinals in Rome or for those who might have been in Rome in 2013 (also seminarians at the North American College) to contact us with any information of interest related to McCarrick and the 2013 conclave (laymen too). I am absolutely confident some of you have pieces of this puzzle, perhaps a chance conversation with McCarrick, or an observation–perhaps, most obviously, seeing him with a prominent Italian layman at the North American College in early March 2013, etc. The anonymity of those who contact us will be protected. The above said as background. As fortune would have it, over the last few months, a number of sources in Rome and elsewhere have reached out and or responded to Roma Locuta Est in its efforts to collect information and to develop leads. One of these sources, a Catholic prelate, offered a particularly noteworthy piece of intelligence. This source informed me that soon after the election of Pope Francis, the source encountered McCarrick in Rome.  According to the source (emphasis added):”His very first words to me, before he said anything else – indicating that he had been part of a group working on this – were, “We did it.”  The words left me surprised and pondering. Since I was not involved in any campaign, it seemed to me that McCarrick had been.””We did it.” A short phrase but one packed with implications. The statement and the context reported by the witness certainly is consistent with, if not outright confirmation of the hypothesis there was an active campaign — or should we say ‘conspiracy‘ — to elect Cardinal Bergoglio, something that went beyond the mere “exchange of views concerning the election” allowed by papal election rules, e.g., Universi Dominici Gregis  (cf UDG 81).  This despite the strenuous denials to the contrary made over the years by various “St. Gallen mafia” members and or by Bergoglian groupies. In addition, this information is consistent with, if not confirmation of the view McCarrick specifically campaigned for Cardinal Bergoglio’s election–as requested by the “influential Italian gentleman”–and for which, per Vigano’s Testimony, McCarrick was apparently rewarded by Pope Francis [NB: more of this in an upcoming part II].Again, we continue our efforts to gather information and or develop leads, whether in Rome, Buenos Aires, or elsewhere. If you read this, and you know something about what really happened, or even if you may have only a small piece of this puzzle–but which has not yet been reported–please contact us.As for cardinals, bishops, etc., who might be reading this–particularly those cardinals who participated in the 2013 conclave; now might be a good time to seek an opportunity to interview McCarrick, and to query him about the “influential Italian gentleman,” his own efforts on Bergoglio’s behalf, the identities of McCarrick’s “we“, what the we “did” precisely, and what did Bergoglio know about “it.”There will be a Part II as a followup to this latest revelation released soon (probably within 24 hours).Steven O’Reilly is a graduate of the University of Dallas and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Rip McIntosh PUBLISHES ON HIS BLOG THE FAREWELL LETTER OF HEROIC WRITER Bari Weiss ADDRESSED TO A.G. SULZBERGER, THE PUBLISHER OF THE New York Times.

Dear A.G. (Sulzberger),
It is with sadness that I write to tell you that I am resigning from The New York Times.
I joined the paper with gratitude and optimism three years ago. I was hired with the goal of bringing in voices that would not otherwise appear in your pages: first-time writers, centrists, conservatives and others who would not naturally think of The Times as their home. The reason for this effort was clear: The paper’s failure to anticipate the outcome of the 2016 election meant that it didn’t have a firm grasp of the country it covers. Dean Baquet and others have admitted as much on various occasions. The priority in Opinion was to help redress that critical shortcoming.
I was honored to be part of that effort, led by James Bennet. I am proud of my work as a writer and as an editor. Among those I helped bring to our pages: the Venezuelan dissident Wuilly Arteaga; the Iranian chess champion Dorsa Derakhshani; and the Hong Kong Christian democrat Derek Lam. Also: Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Masih Alinejad, Zaina Arafat, Elna Baker, Rachael Denhollander, Matti Friedman, Nick Gillespie, Heather Heying, Randall Kennedy, Julius Krein, Monica Lewinsky, Glenn Loury, Jesse Singal, Ali Soufan, Chloe Valdary, Thomas Chatterton Williams, Wesley Yang, and many others.
But the lessons that ought to have followed the election—lessons about the importance of understanding other Americans, the necessity of resisting tribalism, and the centrality of the free exchange of ideas to a democratic society—have not been learned. Instead, a new consensus has emerged in the press, but perhaps especially at this paper: that truth isn’t a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job is to inform everyone else.
Twitter is not on the masthead of The New York Times. But Twitter has become its ultimate editor. As the ethics and mores of that platform have become those of the paper, the paper itself has increasingly become a kind of performance space. Stories are chosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences, rather than to allow a curious public to read about the world and then draw their own conclusions. I was always taught that journalists were charged with writing the first rough draft of history. Now, history itself is one more ephemeral thing molded to fit the needs of a predetermined narrative.
My own forays into Wrongthink have made me the subject of constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views. They have called me a Nazi and a racist; I have learned to brush off comments about how I’m “writing about the Jews again.” Several colleagues perceived to be friendly with me were badgered by coworkers. My work and my character are openly demeaned on company-wide Slack channels where masthead editors regularly weigh in. There, some coworkers insist I need to be rooted out if this company is to be a truly “inclusive” one, while others post ax emojis next to my name. Still other New York Times employees publicly smear me as a liar and a bigot on Twitter with no fear that harassing me will be met with appropriate action. They never are.
There are terms for all of this: unlawful discrimination, hostile work environment, and constructive discharge. I’m no legal expert. But I know that this is wrong.
I do not understand how you have allowed this kind of behavior to go on inside your company in full view of the paper’s entire staff and the public. And I certainly can’t square how you and other Times leaders have stood by while simultaneously praising me in private for my courage. Showing up for work as a centrist at an American newspaper should not require bravery.
Part of me wishes I could say that my experience was unique. But the truth is that intellectual curiosity—let alone risk-taking—is now a liability at The Times. Why edit something challenging to our readers, or write something bold only to go through the numbing process of making it ideologically kosher, when we can assure ourselves of job security (and clicks) by publishing our 4000th op-ed arguing that Donald Trump is a unique danger to the country and the world? And so self-censorship has become the norm.
What rules that remain at The Times are applied with extreme selectivity. If a person’s ideology is in keeping with the new orthodoxy, they and their work remain unscrutinized. Everyone else lives in fear of the digital thunderdome. Online venom is excused so long as it is directed at the proper targets.
Op-eds that would have easily been published just two years ago would now get an editor or a writer in serious trouble, if not fired. If a piece is perceived as likely to inspire backlash internally or on social media, the editor or writer avoids pitching it. If she feels strongly enough to suggest it, she is quickly steered to safer ground. And if, every now and then, she succeeds in getting a piece published that does not explicitly promote progressive causes, it happens only after every line is carefully massaged, negotiated and caveated.
It took the paper two days and two jobs to say that the Tom Cotton op-ed “fell short of our standards.” We attached an editor’s note on a travel story about Jaffa shortly after it was published because it “failed to touch on important aspects of Jaffa’s makeup and its history.” But there is still none appended to Cheryl Strayed’s fawning interview with the writer Alice Walker, a proud anti-Semite who believes in lizard Illuminati.
The paper of record is, more and more, the record of those living in a distant galaxy, one whose concerns are profoundly removed from the lives of most people. This is a galaxy in which, to choose just a few recent examples, the Soviet space program is lauded for its “diversity”; the doxxing of teenagers in the name of justice is condoned; and the worst caste systems in human history includes the United States alongside Nazi Germany.
Even now, I am confident that most people at The Times do not hold these views. Yet they are cowed by those who do. Why? Perhaps because they believe the ultimate goal is righteous. Perhaps because they believe that they will be granted protection if they nod along as the coin of our realm—language—is degraded in service to an ever-shifting laundry list of right causes. Perhaps because there are millions of unemployed people in this country and they feel lucky to have a job in a contracting industry.
Or perhaps it is because they know that, nowadays, standing up for principle at the paper does not win plaudits. It puts a target on your back. Too wise to post on Slack, they write to me privately about the “new McCarthyism” that has taken root at the paper of record.
All this bodes ill, especially for independent-minded young writers and editors paying close attention to what they’ll have to do to advance in their careers. Rule One: Speak your mind at your own peril. Rule Two: Never risk commissioning a story that goes against the narrative. Rule Three: Never believe an editor or publisher who urges you to go against the grain. Eventually, the publisher will cave to the mob, the editor will get fired or reassigned, and you’ll be hung out to dry.
For these young writers and editors, there is one consolation. As places like The Times and other once-great journalistic institutions betray their standards and lose sight of their principles, Americans still hunger for news that is accurate, opinions that are vital, and debate that is sincere. I hear from these people every day. “An independent press is not a liberal ideal or a progressive ideal or a democratic ideal. It’s an American ideal,” you said a few years ago. I couldn’t agree more. America is a great country that deserves a great newspaper.
None of this means that some of the most talented journalists in the world don’t still labor for this newspaper. They do, which is what makes the illiberal environment especially heartbreaking. I will be, as ever, a dedicated reader of their work. But I can no longer do the work that you brought me here to do—the work that Adolph Ochs described in that famous 1896 statement: “to make of the columns of The New York Times a forum for the consideration of all questions of public importance, and to that end to invite intelligent discussion from all shades of opinion.”
Ochs’s idea is one of the best I’ve encountered. And I’ve always comforted myself with the notion that the best ideas win out. But ideas cannot win on their own. They need a voice. They need a hearing. Above all, they must be backed by people willing to live by them.

Sincerely,

Bari Weiss
